Today
Omaha, 4. De Moines, .
Three out of fo'ir from Dee Moines.
A dean shut out on a muddy field.
That was the finish of the series with
Pm Molnis, which was hard fought all
the way through. Omaha test but on
name, tl.at of Friday when Frank Lang
, pitched for the visitors.
Superb pitching by Jthn Lcwer and per
fect folding back of him by the entlr
Rourk family wss the cause of a shut
out ndriilnlsted by Omaha to the ancient
enemies from Des Moines Saturday be
fore 2.000 fans who Insisted on going to
Vinton street park In spit . of the rain
that was pouring down about the time
for the fans to leave the central part of
the city. Over 600 stood outside the gat
and clamored for admission before Pa
Rntirke decided to try to play the game.
A force of men with shovels and rakes
and a wheelbarrow aoon ditched the
diamond and let the water off. Dry dirt
was brought from under the grandstand
and a dry path made between home and
first, around home and the pitcher's box
and around third. Boys with huge sponges
and phlls snaked up all thti water possible
and at 4:15 the gam was on.
Lower was sent to the hill and he
showed entirely different form than he
displayed in the lawt Lincoln game. Yes
terday he held the Hlgglnses to five hits,
passed but four and made eight assists.
The team did not make a bobble back of
him and as a consequence Des Moines
could not score.
It was not all so easy, however, for
Lower was In trouble all the time during
theflrst four Innings with men on second
and third. After that the way was easy
nd Des Moines did not have a chance.
How It Cam A boat.
In the first Inning Art Bader beat out
' a slow one to Perrlne and was sacrificed
t second by Colllgan, but there ho, died,
for Welch made a elrous catch of Mat
rick's fly and Captain Dwyer struck out
In the second Inning Lower walked the
first two men up and Williams fanned the
air thrice. Shea hit to IOwer and the men
on bases moved up a notch. Blersdorfer
ended t,hat session by hitting an easy on
to Lower.
In the third the flrs'Tisn flaw to Cap
tain Franek and Collljan walked. Mattlck
hit safe, putting two on bases with on
out. They moved along a base on Dwyer's
grounder to Lower and Captain Franek
saved the day by nailing Dalton'a grounder
v and subduing him at first.
The fourth was another hard on and
then the agony was over. Lower passed
the first man and Clyde Williams hit safe.
' Shea died trying to make a third bunt
and Blersdorfer sacrificed them on a base.
Bader hunted for a good one, but the best
he could do was a grounder to Kan.
in in . meantime umana had been ac
cumulating enough runs to win the gam.
A strong effort was mad to soor In the
firat on a baa on balls, a sacrifice and
Welch's single, but Perrlne could not d
liver. A start was mad, however, In the
aeoond when, with on out, Franek beat
out. a bunt. Oondlng hit to Colllgan and
that accommodating shortstop fumbled and
both were safe. Lower helped them along
a base with a clean single. The going was
sort and the runners did not seem to be
able to go but one on any sort of a hit.
Then earn "Red" Fisher and with a sin
gle drove In the first, run. '
. Two more were marked up In the fourth !
when, with on down, Oondlng started tha
rally . with a single. Lower walked and
Fisher struck out, but Oondlng stole third
- en the play. Kmg walked, and Schlpke
drove Oondlng and Lower home with a
well-plaoed single.
Two singles .and Williams' error scored
another In the fifth.
