The wheat market bad eeial sinking spells today owing to the condition of the fall sown crop and to tha northward spread of harvest opera tlon. but closed fairly steady, prices Vc hlKher to e lower than yesterday. Corn and oata closed easy, but provisions were weak. Renewed selling of July was the feature of wheat trad ng and the price or that op tlon moved over a range of 2Vo. At times the market was decidedly weak, but buy In of the deferred feature by prominent interest tended to create a steadier feel- - in if. The chief factor in the situation was (the near approach of harvest in several of the leading winter wheat states and the generally bearish tenor of crop advices - from the southwest. Foreign crop advices also were optimistic. The Improved conditions abroad were largely responsible for a decline or HB'M. at Liverpool, which had a weakening effect here at the atari. A substantial rally oc curred toward midday owing to the strendtli of northwestern markets, parttuu Isrlv that at Winnipeg, which was up 3c, J due larpely to a brisk demand for the cash ' grain. The advance Induced fresh selling pi Julv and the price of that option de clined from 11.174 to $1.15V. SEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Uncertainty PreYaili in Market snd Flnctattions Are Many. CONDITION OF MONEY MARKET Higher Rates for Money- Daring; the) Week raster Feella f Cnntlon n P.irt nf Borrower De mand from Interior. ' NEW YORK, June 11. The action of the ay s stock market threw no conclusive light upon the state of speculative opinion beyond the uncertainty mirrored In the constant fluctuations of price. The marked contraction in the volume of the market the same time was an additional symp tom of the disinclination to assume a definite attitude In the speculation. rorecast of the bank statement af forded from Increased assurance over the money oVitlook and rates for call loan yielded to below t per cent after the ap pearance of the preliminary estimates of the week s currency movement. In solte of the tone of the Chicago exchange on mew york. the Inflow of currency from the Interior seems to be uninterrupted. The estimates of the gain In cash bv the banks vary from 35,000,000 to over 3s,O00.Ono. The higher rates for money during the week, both on time and call, foster a feel ing of caution on the part of the borrow ers and Induce the conviction that the demand from the Interior for funds to move the crops Is at hand. The extended position of the loan accounts of the banks dds to this disposition, especially with the approach of the period of the semi annual settlement. It 1 probable the seasonable hardening In the money market has something to do with the scaling- down of speculative activity In stocks. Some repressive effect Is traceable to the de velopments In' regard to the American StiKar Refining company. There was some unsettlement caused by the discrepancy between the sharp decline n the price of copper warrants In London and the break In Rio Tinlo mining shares n Paris and the flowing report of copper rade conditions which continue to clrcu late here. The suggestion that exports ot copper were accumulating In foreign stocks and that domestic deliveries by produced were finding lodgement In second hands wllhout going wholly Into consumption wa regarded as disturbing and as partly ac counting for the alugglshness In the copper industrials. United Slates Steel also was lmost Immovable, Colorado A Southern dropped 3 points bi cause the directors refrained from de elating a dividend, in fact raising the question whether the 4 per cent basis established by the Hawley oontrol befor3 the sale to the Burlington would be main tained. There were declines In other stocks still In Hawley control. There was an other variation In the opposing movements of the Harrlmnn Paclflca, Southern Pacific tak.ng up the advance, while Union Pacific became reactionary. Wabash preferred was a strong feature with the repetition of the still unconfirmed rumor of absorp tion by the Lackawanna. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value, 36,676,000. At th same time, there have been almost twice as many sheep on sal this aeek as there a ere last week. This Is -plained In the unusually large percentage of "dlrerta" last week. The class of of ferings during the peat four days has been different, as well. The bulk this week hss consisted of California tock, mostly spring lambs, as contrasted with the customary run of westerns. This feature makes a comparison of values for the week very difficult, since there were no coast sheep here last week, and very few spring lamb. Among the receipts, however, were some pretty good iat reeves. The trade on beef steers was verv slow and weak. Packers did not appear to care very much whether thev got any more killers this week or not. and their bids were not to the liking of sellers, so thai the trade was a drag from start to finish It was late before a clearance was ef, fected. In spite of the fact that receipt! were so small. In spite of the weakness today, the market Is a little higher than It was one week ago. There were only a few scntterlnr loads or cows ana neirers in sight. The feeling was that dry lot cows or heifers would command eteady prices, but ftrassers were slow sale. For the week the market on strlotly good heifers has shown little change, but grass cows and all kinds of inferior she stuff Is around 3050c lower than a week ago. There were no stockers or feeders In sight today upon which to make an est! mate of the market. For the week the supply of good heavy feeders hss been small and prises In consequence have not shown much change. On the other hand light stockers have broken badly, not only here, but at all other market points. Salsemen orf the other hand, were alow to part with their holdings, being determined apparently to force every cent possible out of the mar ket. With both sides rather stubborn, the market dragxed along during the early morning without very much business being transacted, and it was well along toward 11 o'clock before the trade was really under way. Here and there, wherever a salesman could secure a bid that looked at all reason able, he would cut loose, a load or two at a time going to the scales, but at prlcea that were safely 5'dlCk- lower than yester day. Thus It took right good hogs to bring $7.56. while the bulk sold at $7.207.60. The happiest man In St. Louis, becaust he never worries and always gets what ever he wants. Is Simon Bildsteln, who, ,t few days ago, celebrated his 100th birthday. Herr Ulldsteln has a philosophy of life and conduct calculated to shock the prohibi tionist and the antl-tobacoonlst Into shivering- flu. Likewise will his dietary creed give th vegetarian the dance of 8U Vltua merely lo contemplate. Bildsteln denies himself nothing-, and unto him nothing Is denied. He drinks, ha smokes, he chews. He Is not a drunkard not now though he used to get drunk. That was many years ago. Long, long ago Herr Blldsteln's capacity for red liquor became so great that all the whisky he cares to drink now has no Intoxicating effect. Blldsteln's regular consumption of whisky, according to his statement and that of the family with whom he Uvea, ia ona gallon a week. His regular consumption, therefore, Is something more than one pint a day. Bildsteln smokes a pipe, a big, long, strong German pipe. He starts smoking shortly after he gets up, which Invariably Is 6 a. m. But before he lights his pipe he goes down to the kitchen and lights the fire. Then he takes a portion of his dally pint, which la always on hand in the kit chen. His pipe lit, the old man goes about the house and premises doing chores such as carrying hods of coal, chopping kindling wood, and cleaning out tha stables. He be lieves fn exercise. As to eating, Herr Bildsteln just eats anything he wants. No dietary discipline controls his appetite. He eats meat and vegetables any sort, all sorts. Herr Blldsteln's philosophy of life and his prescription of longevity may be ex pressed in two words, "Don't worry." He never worries. "Sleep plenty, cat plenty, chew plenty, smoke plenty, drink plenty and don't worry," says Bildsteln. But the centenarian la not Intemperate he says so himself. He la strongly op posed to Intemperance as he views It "Too much whisky is a bad thing," ha saya.
