NEW YORK GENERAL MARKET STEEL PRESSURE IS RELIEVED No Hitch Has Occarred In Plana for Tradlnar In Steel Stork In Paris, and Feellaa; Anoat Trade la Confident. NEW TOBK. June 10,-The action of the stock market today Indicated the resump tion of some Important operations on the long side. Signs of profit taking sales were still In evidence at n few points and the advance was uneven, leaving some Import ant laggards. in ion Pacific was a leader upward in contrast with the sluggish movement of the Southern Pacific stocks. The latter stock was freed from the positive weak ness which it showed yesterday. Northern Pacific was even more prominent than I'nlon Pacific. Its rapid advancement was accounted for by rumors that steps were being taken to introduce the stock 'o the Paris Rourse in the ssme way as had been done In the case of I'nlted States Steel. The denial from bankers interested that any hitch had occurred In the plans for trading in I'nlted States Steel In Parts, aa waa rumored with depressing effect yes- leraay, relieved i ntted states steel rrom pressure and It more than recovered Its quarterly dividend during the day. The stock was helped also by the report of the reopening of the Ensley (Ala.) steel rail mills. Feeling regarding the steel trade con tinues confident and professional. The news overnight of a rise in wages of workers for several of the Independent steel companels was tnken as confirmatory of Improving conditions In the trade. The Introduction to the trading on the Stock exchange of contracts for the new Atchison convertible bonds when Issued was made the occasion for a bullish dem onstration in Atchison. The reports of crop conditions were regarded favorably. Some apprehension was expressed in stock mar- Ket circles that the recent course or liti gation against American Sugar Refining company and the agitation for prosecution ny the government under antl-trUBt law might revive anxiety on the part of In vestors in corporations and prejudice the movement to attract foreign capital Into them. Rates for call loans ranged from 2 per cent above that figure. The banks of England and France made strong returns today and the discount rate declined In Paris while the Paris cheque on London advanced. A relaxation in the pressure on New York for gold Is thus In dicated. On the other side, however, a fall In New York exchange at Chicago to par compared with 35 cents per ll.OOO premium a week ago shows an ebbing of the flow of currency to New York and gives the premonition of coming requirements for the movements of the country's crops. Kates for time loans for the longer ma turity have advanced a fraction and keener scrutiny of collateral In stock mar ket loans by bankers was reported. The Irregularity of the market Increased aa the day advanced. UondM were Irregular. Total sales, par value. $6,410,000. I'nlted States bonda were unchanged on call. The wheat market, ws weak all day, with the expectlon -of ri brief period at the start, when prices rose to a point a trifle above yesterday's closing figures as result of unexpected strength at Liver pool. The weakness beonnrw dorrdeiHy proj nounced In the final hour and the July delivery waa subjected to heavy selling pressure. Much of the selling late In the day was of a stop loss character. Bearish sentiment in tha pit was due mainly to a material Improvement In the condition of fall sown crop as Indicated in numerous repot ts which were received from Kansas, Nebraska and the Ohio river valley. Ac cording to some advices the crop in Kan-t-as Is Improving as a result of recent tains and harvesting will begin pn a gen eral seal-) next week. . Floods In some MCtlins of the southwest, however, were mid to have -wrought tome damage to growing grain.
