Steinhart has threatened to resign for some time, but Ms resignation has not yet been received, so Governor Shallenberger said at the conclusion of the exercises. Mr. Steinhart Is wrothy over the removal by the governor of Superintendent Cyrus White and the appointment of B. R. Stew art In his place. Had he been present he would doubtless" have heard with some pleasure the praise paid Mr. White by R, B. Windham of Plattsmouth, president of the board of trustees of the school. Mr. Windham announced that Mr. White had been offered the superlntendency of the Kansas School for the Deaf, a larger Institution than the one from which he had been displaced. Governor Shallenber ger listened with some embarrassment to the praise and the announcement of Mr. White's new position and the executive's position was for the time being not a pleasant one. The graduation exercises took place In the main auditorium of the school, which was Jammed, and the students, young and old, who took part In the program de served all the complimentary things said of them by Governor Shallenberger and President Windham. The expected Injunction and protests agalnat the orig inal award of the contract were not forth coming. The South Omaha Electric Light and Power company did not ee fit to fight agalnat the previous action of the city council. The ordinance provides for a min imum of 18fJ lights and the rate for the public light Is to be 170 per arc. The rate to private consumers I 14 cents and 6 cent excess per kllowat hour. The time of the contract Is five years. Eleven grade ordinandi, providing for change of grades, were passed. One of these changes, that of Twenty-sixth street, Occasioned considerable debate between the metnbera of the council, but It wa finally passed. Thl change of grade haa been successfully fought for two year. The Omaha Ga company and the Omaha Water company were Instructed to make all their etop boxes on a level with the curb, and In no case to Insert the same In the sidewalk where there wan any room between the walk and the curb. . Among the petition and communications, the building Inspector reported $21,153 a the valuation of new building construc tion In the city for the month of May. J. W. The Board of Education held a routine session last evening, but among the iema two matters were, of , considerable signifi cance. The board voted unani mously for. such a provision., This will be the first establishment of kindergartens in the city. The need of this kind of in struction has long beel recognized. The superintendent also recommended the extension of the manual training de partment to Include Brown Park and Haw thorne schools. This report was aiso adopted.
