' With moderate Offerings of beef steers and with rather encouraging advices from other points, good kinds of heavy and light cattle soldVBJlOe higher than last week, with common, medium weight and rough heavy cattle showing but little change. W'hll th market was not overly active, there was a fair movement, and pretty much everything waa disposed of In fair aesson In the morning. Cow and heifers were rather alow but steady at last week's decline. The heavy break In common and Inferior grades of cow stuff at this point last week has made buyers vary weak on cattle of that d-ertptlon. There was quite a bunch of stockera and fcedets In the yards this morning In fact more cattle of that description than have been seen hor In two or three weeks. As a result, of tha mora liberal receipts, the market - waa generally 10c and In some cases possibly as much as 16c lower than last week. -'It- wtir be remembered, how ever, that th market for soma time back on feeders has been unreasonably high, owing to the fact that thr have been so few coming. The speculative ppeut for stocks had lost some of its sest today, to Judge by th irregular and uncertain mavement of prices and a snarp break at th last. There was a moderate nourslon of new orders to buy. from tn. outdd world, such as Is looked for, es pecially on Monday morning, during th progress of a speculative campaign, and prices, as usual, In the circumstances, were opened as high as posalble. with benevo lent Intent toward those having stocks to sell, rather than towards the newly st- raoted buysrs The new buying, In fact. was on a moderate cale. Heading was selected as the principal medium for the supporting operations of the bull party. Th manner In which th blocks of thous ands of shares of that stock were thrown about, from one hand to another, ve an artificial appearanoe to the dealings which auggested suspicions of the motives for this movement. It was accompanied by unverified rumors of an Intended in crease In th dividend on the stock. Ru mors of coming dividend Increases played a prominent part In the show of strength of special stocka. This was In marked con trast with th severe reaction In th prloe of 8t Louie Southwestern preferred, which got Ita dividend lnoreaa last week, leav- ng nothing more to be looked tor aa ma terial for speculative excitement. Another group of stocks moved in re sponse to Intimations that plans wer ripening for reorganisation of company finances, this rumor serving Wabash well. The strong stocks were less Influential In holding the rt of the market, than proved to be th oas In the sessions of Friday and Saturday last wek. This was partly due to th process of realising having shifted to stocks in th movements which are of greater Influence on speculative sentiment. United States Steel and I'mon Pacific were both under pressure of this kind and the effect of this on the general speculative tone was rather formidshle. From tne southwest came reports that demand for currency waa beginning to stir, in pre parations for moving the coming crops. The hardening of discount rates ahrosd Is beginning to prove a perceptible drag on movements New York bankers are not sstlsfled thst the outward movement of gold from New York Is over. An advance In th price of copper metsl failed to bene fit th Conner Industrials. The bears oper ated tlmldlv. In fear of the demonstrated Dower of the bull leadership, and It wns not until the end of the day that they attacked the market .with any boldness. Prices gave way all around In the last half hour.
