PRICES HQ YE TO LOWES LEVELS Reading Lea da Dswaaari Mlaasp, Wkleh la Dae- Largely la Dlstrast af Tradea la P res at High Valaea. NEW TORK. May 2.-L. 8. Pteel today followed the dally cuatom It bat established now by more than a week of example, of aelling at a new high record on each suc cessive dty. Yesterday and today, the ad dition to tha record has been only H and today waa accomplished only on the open ing sale. After that the price moved with the reat of th market to lower levels. Moat of tha proceedings of the day at the stock exchange consisted In trading in lies ding or In watching the transatclona in that stock, which overshadowed the whole market and weighed on It wlh depressing effect. The movement In Reading was taken to heart aa a possible object lesson owing to analogy of ita situation with other securi ties that have been most prominent in the speculation of laate. The high price at which Reading has aold relative to its in come yield haa been pointed out often by those skeptical of Ita rise, but followers of th movement have given as answer tha expectation of an important deal in the property, which would redound to tha bene fit of stockholders. Tha weakness of the stock today was traceable to the lack of deflnltenesa about any information which has been vouch safed regarding the supposed deal. The large selling orders In the stock coming from single brokerage house gave the Im pression of the liquidation of an important speculative account. Tha bear party found the stock vulnerable to attack and dis lodged ome large atop-los orders at the round figure In the course of the decline. The decline failed to develop the show of support usual in a stock tn which an or gsnited long account atands commltcd. The telling operations centered largely In Reading and the sympathetic effect on the general list was moderate at all times. The action of Reading waa suggestive of results that might follow from concerted attack on the marget after an expensive specula tion and chilled the ardor of buyers of slocks. It waa aupposed that some closing tip of speculative accounts was prompted bv the belief that the authorities would decline to close the stock exchange on Saturday as well as on Monday next, which latter decoration day holllday. The speculation Is Inclined to wait anyhow on the next government report on condition of the grain crops, which ia not due until June T. Outside newt was of very little effect on the merwet. Announcement was made with some Impresslveness of the agreement between the Hill and Harrlman interests for tha iolnt use of the Northern Pacific tracks beyond Taoma and the Importance of the agreement as guiding against future invasion of each other'a territories by these aHant railroad forces waa dealt upon with some otttentatlon. Coupled with this sveernvnt was one that K. H . Uarrtman had made his last intended visit to his ori fice before his departure for Europe on June I. The failure of this annnui ment to stir a tipple In tha market was signlfl- cent or the dormant smut or tne speciua tion and confirmed the traders in their abstention from operating. A lively epecu latlon in copper industrials abroad resulted from the condition of tha metal trade, but New Tork coppera were unresponsive. The br-a!c in the price of wheat wa equally without influence on stocks. urop news In fact, continued rather unfavorable, as was witnessed by the later rally in the price or wheat.
