15 THE BEE: OMAHA. THURSDAY. MAY 27. 1000. CHALMERS TALKS TO AD MEN Salesmanship and Advertising Closely Related Says Manufacturer. MORE CARE IN PRESENTING GOODS oreessfal Makers or Retailers Tell (ulrarri flr What Waal Be Told la l.rrtar oa the ahjert. "Salesmanship Is closer related to ad vertising than a man to his wife," said Hugh Chalmers at the banquet tendered him at Hanson's by the Omaha Ad club Wednesday noon. "They are closer related because they can never be divorced." .Mr. Chalmers was the maanet to draw nut loO members of the club, the largest attendance the Club hns ever had to tax tin; capacity of Hanson's banquet room. Adjoining rooms had to' be thrown open to accommodate all desirous of hearing Mr. Chalmers, who Is recognized as quite a live one on advertising. He is president of the, Chalmers-Detroit Automobile company. " Advertising and salesmanship cannot be separated, a each contains the other. The object Is to educate the people to the value of the thlnns you have to sell. To sell goods at a profit Is the reason we are all In business. All advertisements should be part of a campaign of education.- Mote money is spent in this country each year for advertising than for any other one thing. It is the connecting link between the Inventor and, the use- of inventions. Let the people know what you have to e and they will do the rest. Care I'sed In Advertising. "Advertising must be convincing it must tll a story it must be such that a man can see the personality back of the com pany. Advertising should be careful. If a business msn could gsther all his pros pective customers Info one large room he would be most careful mhat he ssld to them or to whom he had to' say It. and It la the same thing when you use printer's Ink. . "Selling goods Is nine-tenths of the problem and making the goods Is but one tenth. t-alesmanHhip Is making the other fellow feel as you do concerning the goods you have to sell. Vou are dealing with a human mind and you want to make that mind feel as you do. "There are three divisions to salesman ship: Employment, training and super vision. Never employ an unsuccessful man pick out the live ones who have made a success of something. The expenses on the road are Just as much for a poor man as for an expensive man. the only differ ence being that his salary Is a little more. "Teach the men before they go on the road and It will give them a good six months' start. If I was a retailer I would have a school for my clerks, If It was to teach them nothing more than common courtesy. You can't throw Insincere thought at a man and have him catch sincere ideas."
