ll.Mvln. Bs jgf the start..- a sharp rally
which carried the May and July options to
new high points Jor the crop and a severe
s.ump tate in tha session were the salient
features of tne, day's trading In the wheat

lh,. exception, nr the May delivery, which
w;is up U'iiIc compared with yesterday's
close, at 1 ;iVtJ1.36V The strength of
the current month was due to renewed cov
ering by shorts. . The market In-general,
however, wus bearlalily affected by reports
of uddltlonsl rain In southern Russia,
where a drouth ua prevailed for some
time, and by wet weather In the south
west. Toward the end of .'the first hour
a stronger tone Urvelop.wl on brisk. bUyliig
of July by commission houses which car
ried that delivery up almoat 14c. from the
opening low point. The buoyancy, how
ever, was shortlived. 8everal reports giv
ing estimates on the wheat crop of Kansas
drifted to the pit and as these reports
forecasted a much larger yield than out
lined by somrt of yesterday s advices pit
traders were inclined to favor the selling
side of the market. A report that har
vesting had begun In three counties of
Texas and that fields which had previously
been pronounced dead were threshing out
twelve to fifteen bushels per acre prompted
additional sales. Bentlment In the pit be
came decidedly bearish during the final
hour and May sold off to 1.33. July de

FAV0EABLE REPORTS FROM TEXAS
Wave of Animation la Followed ky
Lapse Into Ternld Cnndltlona

on Down Grnde. -
NEW YORK. May 2J.-Th atock market
today dm not retiect mucu inclination to
reauine active speculation on tne i 1 01
operators ol great importance. fbe anx
iety lclt yesterday on account of the na
ture ot some ol the estimates ot crop
conditions in Kansas and neighboring
states was somewhat relieved todav, owing
to more cheerful news of the situation,
but Ibis relief tailed to revive the stock
market. Reports ot the beginning ot the
wheat harvest In Texas alleged a fair
yield In localities that had been down as a
failure of the crop. The weekly bulletin
of the weather bureau took a favorable
view of the effects of the rains of the
last faw days, but showed general deficien
cies of temperature for the week.
The small wave of animation during the
first hour, during which some effort to
lift prices wss made, was followed bv n
lapse Into torpid conditions, which prom
ised the dullest day for many weeks. The
threat thus conveyed of an approaching
period of lethargy In the speculation had
a discouraging effect on some holders,
who were looking fr a prmpt advanoe.
There waa traceable some. Influence for de
pression In the news of the progress of
the strike on the Georgia Railroad, and
the dimensions which the trouble was tsk
ing on. Some Interest attacned to the In
spired announcement that J. P. Morgan
Co. had withdrawn from connection with
the proposed merger of a number of smaller
fertllixer companies in the south. The
early drop In United States Steel threat
ened an Interruption of the dally succes
sion of new record prices, which lhat se
curity has been making, btit this was
avoided when It stiffened to 61 late In
the day. This belated movement was of
considerable smrathctlc effect on the
whole list. An advance In price of refined
copper at the metal exchange wss an
nounced and there were reports that the
selling price had been lifted by the selling
agency of the principal producers. These
reports gave figures of sales thus far this
month that pointed to a volume of de
liveries for May conslderablv In excess of
any month since the present revival set In.
and well In excess of the prevailing rate of
production. In the flnnl dealings there was
a general setback. In which Reading. St.
Paul and Western Maryland were particu
larly weak. Business left off dull, with
prices on the down grade.
Bonds Irregular. Total sales, par value.

CATTLE Receipts of caine were small
this morning, oi ly 16 cars being reported
in, as against 260 cars last week, 2Y6 cars
two Weeks ago 3fl cars three weeks ago.
Most everything in sight consisted of kill
ers, either beef steers or cow stuff.
As was the case yesterday, the demand
was principally for the handy light or
medium weight cattle and the good kinds
commanded steady to strong prices. On
tho other hand heavy cattle and Inferior
light and medium grades were slow sellers
and it was late before a clearance was ef
fected: ' A few head of cattle sold up as
high as $7 00.
Cows and heifers were In very fair de-i
mand and sold quite freely at about the
same prices as prevailed yeRterdav. in fact
salesmen almost without exception were
quoting it as a steady market in the face
of a reasonably active demand.
There were no stockers or feeders of any
consequence in first hands, the supply of
that kind of cattle being very small. There
was some little Inquiry and the feeling waa
that anything desirable would have com
manded good firm prices.

BHEKt Tho prophet who Uoped put a
steady, conservative "tllrep market frtun
now on, evidently "picked up tlie wronu
dope can. It was a session of runaway
values and lot, of pyrotechnics In the sheep
barn this mornlni. About the only differ
ence between today's market and yester
day's Is Hut there was not aa great an as
Bortmcnt of supplies yesterday wltn which
to test values and, of course, the general
effect produced was not as impressive.
Prices opened this morning all the way
from lur&'Jx; higher than yesterday, the ad
vance differing according to the quality
of sheep. Th bulk of the offerings wete
weighed up on this basis. The demand
was vigorous throughout the session and
the trade was naturaliy active. Practically
everything cluingcd uands by k o'clock. The
receipts were limited, but the quality and
assortment were better than usual, Worl
skins and clippers were about evenly di
vided and, while the bulk of receipts con
sisted of lambs, there waa a fair sprink
ling of sheep stuff.
In the wooled department wethers and
yearlings, mixed, sold at 47.40. and a est
of Mexican Colorado lambs topped at 19.28
This Is only Irtc below the highest pries
ever paid on this market for wooled lambs.
The best spring lambs moved at 18.00. Bhorn
lambs topped at 1800, and three decks of
shorn ewea moved at jW.40. This Is the
highest price paid for clipped ewes for
some time. The total advance for the two
days this week over, last week's close ts
right around 3&?60e.
