CHICAOO. Mey an. Bulllch foreign news

Activity and atrength marked early trad

both for the July and September deliveries,
were more than Ic above the previous

in th fnal hour. The May option again
sold at 11.3ft. the high point for the season.
The market ot the opening waa bullishly

amount being placed .it about one-third
the movement ot the corresponding week

further augtmnted by adverse crtp reports
from France. These f.iclors. however,' were
partially effaet bv more favorable reports
from Kaneas. Ohio and Texas and bv a
report from Kansca' City claiming a very
dull trade In flour. One or two mjlls were
reported In operation there, one-on half

NEW YORK. May The reaction in
the late atock markot today had no other
explanation than the seeming exhaustion
of the power of the upward movement.
The morning dealinga showed animation
and great strength, prices of some of the
favoritea speculative Issues rising to record
figures. Lnlted States Steel had never
sold at 80 before, nor had Southern Pacific
ever Bold at 1244 until today. Reading's
rise to 16t placed It at the highest price
since January of 1S08 and Union Pacific
got back to the highest level of the present
year. Beat prices for the present year
was touched, in fact, by a number of Im
portant atocka.
1 he halt to this Droeperous course of the
market came after the action on the
Harrlman dividends was announced, al
though Mr. Harrlman stated before enter
ing the board room that the rates wouid
probably be unchanged. The heavy selling
of I'nlon Pacific and Southern Pacific
which followed the declaration of dividends
at unchanged rates waa attributed to dis
appointment over the failure to advance
the dividends. The weakness of the
Harrlman stocks, however, waa no greater
than that In Chesapeake and Ohio after
the declaration of the 1 per cent Quarterly
dividend on that stock, thus fulfilling a
lung standing expectation of the placing of
me siock on a 4 per cent basis. Its
price has been advanced many tlnue on re
current rumors that thla action waa im
minent, but It ran off today with the ful
fillment of the prediction.
These two cases, with contrasting In
fluences in operation, showed plHlnlv that
another cause was at work in both. Spec
ulative profit-taking waa a principal factor
In the reaction. The selling of United
States 8te?l at 6ft seemed to be taken as
a signal for such profit-taking on a very
large scale. In the early stagea of the
present campaign for the rise In United
States Steel, advocatea of the movement
claimed, with apparent " recklessness, that
It would not culminate until It had
touched 80. The price has been advanced
from time to time since then, but evidently
the suspicion waa widespread that the ful
filling of the first prediction might mark
the objective of the'eampaign. The In
creaae in the Atlantic Coast Line dividend
waa of some benefit to that stock and to
others In the southern group, but their
advance waa not held.
Actual conditions bearing on values was
not much changed and the speculative
position ruled the price movement. The
reports from the steel trade were of very
bright prospects and of Increasing orders
for all lines of finished products. Copper
rose in price at the local metal exchange.
Recognlxed authoritlea regarding crop con
ditions gave flattering accounts of the im
provement of the winter wheat during the
past week and the highly satisfactory
progress of the spring wheat sowing anil
the early condition of the plant. Ixindon
was a considerably buyer of stocks in
thla market although the origin of these
buying ordera was a. matter of some
doubt. There wca soAie ground for sup
posing that large orfiera In the market
yesterday and early today was designed to
safeguard prices against any possible shock
caused by the sudden death yesterday of H
H. Rogers. These supporting orders may
have been withdrawn with the demon
stration or tne ract that thev were not
needed to protect the market on thm
account. London a purchase of stocks here
and further engagements of gold for ship
ment to Argentina on London account had
no marked effect on the foreign cirhanit.

weight beeves sold possibly a shade
stronger than yesterday and all kinds met

strong and the demand from all source
good.

good deal of question a to what point they
will tart from In their move to the north.
nd every town between here and Rapid
City professes to believe that they, will be
the chosen one. The probabilities appear
to be tht the tart will be fnade either
from Wendle, tip Lance creek, or from
