Duiga earlier In tha session when the May

for .tha season, tl.30 per bushol. At tne

Tha wheat ' market displayed decided
strength during the first half of the day
and prions advanced more than lc above
the previous close, May Incidentally rising
to tlM. which Is a abova the previous
best mark for tha season, established on
April 15. During tha final half, however,
sentiment became extremely bearish and
prices receded lQm to ZHC from the

tne early trading. A. leading elevator con

coverhtg of short Unas for tha account of

lnfluvnces, the market derived strength
.from an advance of Hdfild st Liverpool,
'.inc. It waa aald. to unfavorable crop reports
frutn Kussla, Oermany and Hungary. Gen
eral rains throughout Kansas and Okla

the start, but were undoubtedly In

slump late in the day. The range for
July during the day waa $1.13H snd l.lfr
The close wss weak at almost the bottom,
with July at tl.l.t and Muy at ll.284.
Tha strength of waeat. and active de

During the dsy the July delivery sold

about stesdy, with prices lower to He
higher then' the final qflotatlons of tha

Oats were strong sit dsy, notwithstand
ing the severe break In wheat prices, in
dependent strength developed during the
final half of the session on buying based
on unfavorable crop reports from Ne

NEW TORK. May 1 -The stock market
today wss almost bare of feature or In

Indication of financial opinion or specu

general that large speculative commit
ments had been e osed nut of the market
by sslea to take profits. This conviction
left the professions! traders undecided as
to the significance of the fsct. One party
argued that the desire to get sway for

profits accrued furnished the motives for
the recent selling and not sny well
grounded distrust of the stsbillfy of the
market. The same party pointed to th
effect of the absorption of these nroflt

end In most cases the decline wss right
around litjlfx- on lambs, although on a few
sales, especially of the more trsshy grades,
prices might hsve suffered an even greater
decline. Sheep stuff ruled about stesdy
throughout, but there were not snougrt
ewes or wethers, either shorn or woolea,
to make much of s market. Wooled lambs
ss well were In scsnt supply snd of course
actual tests of -values at tha decline were
Impossible.
This morning's slump Is a reflection of
today s prospects at other markets more
thsn anything else. Advices from Chicago
and one of the principal river markets are
of a discouraging nsture and packers st
this point were not slow In taking advan
tage of the situation.
1 quality of today s arrivals was not
very good on an Average and this feature
served to put an easier tone on values.

CATTLE Receipts ot entile this morning
were very liberal, some 1,600 head heavier
than a week ago, and included a large pro
portion 01 aa good cattle aa have been
thin v.r Ari vires from eastern mar
kets were by no means encouraging, but
the local demands was very good, while
there were several shipping buyers on hand
with liberal orders and the market, opened
not far from steady on the more desirable
grades, both heavy and light. Oh the only
partly tatted cattle bids and sales were
a-pnerallv a shade lower and the trade
slow. As has been the case for some tlms
mil tha rivmnnd was best for the handy,
fight and medium weight beeves, and tnese
were tree sellers rrom suirt. 10 n man. mmu
of the heavier cattle were slow In moving
and prices shaded off a little, although the
decline was not at all serious.
The market for cows and heifers was Just
about steady with yesterday. The supplies
were fairly liberal, out, witn a gooo. ae
msnd from both local butchers and outside
buyers, the movement was brisk from start
to finish with prices generally in yester
day's notches.
There was not a great aeau 01 iciivuj
In stockere and feeders, although for the
most part prices were well sustained for
both heavy and light cattle. The demand,
however, Is not very extensive at this time.
The volume of business was not very large,
but for the most part prices shewed no
particular change.
