VOLUME- OF BUSDfESS SMAU elllag Presaare la Removed, hat Prleea Oe ot Adraare I atll the Final llonrRoads - Are Steady. NEW YORK, May ll The lethargic condition Into which the speculation In stocks fell today waa difficult to account for trom any incident In the news. The apparent completion of selling from u.usr ters that were regarded as Important gave some relief to an apprehension that in formed interests Were liquidating their holdings of stocks. The market was freed from selling pressure In evidence- cster dsy, but prices moved decisively upward only In the final hair hour. Dealings fetl to a lower rate of activity during tin m d day period than has been witnessed In New York for over two months. Effectual support was afforded b the sympathetic Influence of strength In x few stocks, notably Reading. That atock met some very heavv selling- orders In the course of the advsnce. hut offered good resistance. The Krles were strong am! estimate of the Increase In that roa'ls earning power Were put In circulation. The stirring of the market for the Kries was believed to foreshadow the offerings of additional securities Incident to flnnnrliig the road's further needs. The question of successful financing In meet approaching requirements nad its reflection In the heavy tone of the Chicapo Great Western Issues and Toledo raliwnxs. Part of the effect of repression on activity wss due to the renewed rise In prl-es rf wheat and to some of the reports resiv-d of unfavorable weather conditions In pirts of the wheat belt. The results to the ex pert demand of the high prices of whest were seen In the report of the bure.iu of statistics of the agricultural exports for April. Only 6on.929 bushels of wheat were exported In that month, compared with .V300.164 bushels In April of last var. Flour exports also declined from l.rif,2.s62 barrels to s.19.477 barrels this year. Ac companied by the enormous proportions of the country's Importations In the l t few mlnth the peralfctent Strength In the foreign exchange market Is explained bv these figures. The turn to the h.itlng side In the stock market on the p,t of London Increased the supply nf forlirn exchange today. Readings rise lo IMiu placed It nearly two points above the prh c touched In the advance after the jupreme court decision on the commodities claim and the highest since January of 190ft The bunvant upehoot In Reading at the lt awakenedl the general market to onlv a moderate degree of animation, but 'the closing tone was strong. The receipts were made up very largely of beef steers, the same aa on every day of late. More than that the quality was very good, there being plenty of very well finished beeves un saie. Buyers on their first rounds this morn ing looking at the liberal receipts gave nut bids that were generally a little lower than yesterday. However, when buyers and sellers got -together, It was on a basis of steady to strong prices. It became evident that buyers wanted the cattle even If they had to pay good firm prices. Cows and heifers were in moderate UPPly and the market fairly active at just atiout steady prices or possibly strong In spots. Among the offerings were some right good cows that sold up as high as 15.76. while a small bunch of good heif ers sold up to $8.00, the highest price paid on this market so far. Weather conditions In the country are not such as to encourage a free buying of either stock cattle or feeders and the de mand for some little time has not been very broad. Still, with receipts light every day, prices have been well maintained. Tills morning, however, the feeling waa a Utile easier and apeeulators who were the chief buyers seemed Inclined to force a re duction or leave the cattle alone which made the trade rather dull on that kind. For over two weeks It ' has been 11 stesdy boom of prices, with snlrs men and buyers nlternstely predicting a halt. The lofty point was readied this morning, however, when two loads of wooled western lambs wete weighed up Ml $9.35. The phrase, "This is the highest pr ce," hss bfen repeated so often lateh that It smack a trifle of th ludicrous, but the developments of today's session make It almost necesssry to call attention lo this morning's record, even at ti.e risk of overworking a hsndy expression. Be sides being the highest price ever psld In the history of Ihls mstket, t.ti 's a quarter higher than any price previous y paid Moreover, It Is n dime higher thsn anv jirlce ever paid on any Missouri river msr- W'hlle this morning's record-breaking sale would indicate that valuea had taken a big Jump, It must be remembered that nothing extra choice lias been on sale lately with which to sound the limit. The bulk of the offerings changed handa this morning on a strong bisis as compared with yes.erday. While a few sales m ght tie called a dime higher perhaps, these few were offset by ssIps which looked only a sliude better than steady.
