OMAHA, May 11. To the Editor of The
Bee: A few weeks ago a Wealthy man of
fered the board of tri.stees of House of
Hope $2,00c, provided the entire Indebted
ness le paid in the near future. The time
limit has now been fixed at June 1, 1909.
Already $5,0i)0 hns been pledged. We only
need $3,000 true. Will the people of Omaha
not help In the matter. I have worked very
hard for the object for three years. I have
not received any financial reward worth
speaking of. I don't want ary. I have had
no vacation for eighteen years. I often get
tired. I am new planting gardens to help
these old people on provisions, not for
help to cancel any dollar debt onv the
whole property. I will come In person for
the money. Don't say mo nay.

EXTRA PAY MAKES. TROUBLE

Police Officers Are
Worried.
Members of the tlv department cannot
agree a to what they want to do In re
gard to. relinquishing the Increase of pay
granted by the- late legislature. The new
city charter provides for an Increase, but
the legislature made no provision for the
extra money necessary to pay the same.
The members of the police force have
almost unanimously agreed to waive the
new Increase until the beginning of the
next year, but the firemen have not de
cided, so Chief Salter reported to the
Board of Fire and Police commissioners
at their meeting last night, whether they
will waive the Increase or take a chance
on a sixty-day layoff or having the force
cut down to a point where the appropria
tion will cover the expense.
The board will hold a special meeting
at 2 o'clock next Friday afternoon, at
which time It will meet representatives
of the fire department, and It Is prob
able that some decision will be reached.
Tha resignation of Officer F. W. Bitter
waa received and accepted. Mr. Bitter
haa been on the force for almost two
years and has never had charges of any
sort preferred against him. He resigned
hla place on the police force to go Into
the concrete aldewalk business
Charges agalnat Officer A. G. McDonald
came up for hearing, but were laid over
until tha next meeting.

Duncan Turner was found not guilty of
the charge of arson by the Jury in Judge
Sutton a court yesterday afternoon after
a short deliberation. The jury was, in
fact, out only half an hour.
The outcome was not altogether a sur
prise tn those who had followed the case
closely, for although the state Introduced
considerable evidence, testimony was lack
ing connecting Turner with the overt act
of setting the building on fire. Argument
by Deputy County Attorney Magney and
by A. W. Jefferls for the defendant con
sumed practically all day
