Seated more or less comrortably under big hats, a large congregation heard the opening music at First Methodist church Sunday morning, then listened attentively for the voice of the minister, whom only a few could sec. The minister. Rev. F. K Loveland. stood in his usual place on . the platform and looked out over his congregation under fhe canopy of varl-colored straw matting In which blooms and fruits were seen In pro fusion. "1 know 1 would not be able to see all thia vast congi egation." said the minister. "But 1 am sure 1 could see more of it were it not for the size ot some of these hats." As hat after hat was removed, members of the congregation saw that the minister was smiling. In s few minutes he could see the men and women to whom he was talking and the congregation could see the minister. The smile disappeared and he begun lila sermon. "In the great temple of Christianity we have been putting nltogther too many dbg ma tic stones and It Is now time to put In the fundamental stone the corner alone, Jesus of Naxareth," said Dr. Ixiveland. "The trouble with the past has been that we have enthroned too many Pope Hllde brand and John Calvin stones that may possibly be needed In some obscure place but we have put them as the chief corner stone and have rejected the real corner atone, which ia Christ. Cornerstone Recognised. "The stone rejected by the builders has become the chief corner stone says the scriptures and so It hat continued to be through all the ages. If a man wants to become a'Bavlor of men he must make up his mind to be content to die before his greatness ia discovered. The building of the church of Christ would progreaa much faster if the builders would be more care ful not to reject the stone which might become the main stone in the corner. "The revisions and reversions from year to year are the wonders of the age and yet the machine and Ideas of yesterday are brought forth to become the chief corner stone In the temple of Intelligence. "All great truths pass through the en of contempt, of opposition, ot examina tion and vindication. Nine out of ten of the great oppositions to truth come from Ignorance. Intolerance Is always the. pro duct of Intolerance and the reason that Christianity has not long since been given Its pioper place la because the builders have been too busy putting In their dogmas and Isms." Music It would be scarcely fitting that the sea son should close without some comment upon the work of a new choir in one of the most prominent down town churches in Omaha. The choir to which reference Is made is that ot the First Congregational church, Nineteenth and Davenport streets. Mr. Fred O. Ellis la the choirmaster and Mr. Martin Bush Is the organist. At the lime of organisation no special mention was made of the work being done, as the muaic critic of The Bee wished to . wait and hear work that would he somewhat seasoned. Owing to important work of his own he was unable to attend the produc tion of the "Seven l.asi Words." by Du bois, which the choir gave at Eastertide, and which was highly spoken of In the community. . Yesterday afternoon the closing vesper service of tne season took place and a special musical program was presented. The large choir, of about thirty-five or forty voices, entered quietly and reverently, rolled In the collegiate gown and the white stock, without caps or "morjar-board" hats, while Mr. Bush played an allegretto in B minor by the Immortal French or ganist and composer, Alexandre Guilmant. Mr. Ellis, who is the baritone soloist of the church as well as the musical director, does not conduct the choir from the front, with his back to the audience, but quietly makes his influence felt from his sest In the center of the men's section, which sets as a background for the choir. The ef fects are carefully worked out at rehearsal and there is an enthusiasm and a co-operation and true musical spirit which mskes things "go" with esse and certainty. The choir aang a "Festival Te Deum," by Dudley Buck; an anthem, "Sing Alleluia Forth," by the same composer, and "God Is a Spirit," by Sterndale Bennett, ths lat ter being sung without accompaniment. The choir gang throughout with good tone, clear enunciation and well marked rhythm. They secured some-excellent soft effects the most difficult thing to obtain, and keep In tune and the climaxes wore well marked, forceful but not forced and brilliant. At the conclusion of the service the ven erable Deacon Howard aroae and, securing consent from Rev. Dr. Rouse, spoke s few fervent words of genuine appreciation of the power of sacred music and of the work of the choir during the season which just closed. This choir reflects great credit on Mr. Ellis and hia worthy co-worker. Mr. Bush, snd it is a decided addition and ac quisition to the musical growth of Omaha on Its trend upward. K. Coincidence of Grim Reaper Miss Singh and Two Women to Be Her Hostesses Die in a Few Days. Word was receiveil Monday morning by the Methodist Women's Foreign Missionary societies of Omaha that Miss Lilavatl Singh of Lucknow, India, who was to have spoken here May 18. under their auspices, died in Chicago Sunday as the result of sn operation. It Is a peculiar coincidence that Miss Frances J. Baker, long connected with the board of the national society, who was to have been Miss Singh's hostess In Omaha, died about two weeks ago. while another missionary society worker who was to have entertained Miss Singh S few weeks sgo, died only a few days before the dis tinguished missionary wss to havs reached her home.
