NF.W YORK. May 4. An animated and
varied Sfwculatlon wa carried on in the
tock market toitay and the uplift of
price was comprehensive and marked. The
strength waa uneven and the movement In
a few stocks overshadowed the whole mar
ket. Rending still held the most conspicu
ous place In the transaction and the su
preme court decision on the commodities
clause of the Hepburn act was the con
tinued subjert of most earnest discussion.
Reading bsd been picked ss the medium
for expression of feoling on this subject
for months past, and Its violent oscillation
today waa the Index of speculative opinion
and was followed in close sympathy, but
In widely varying; degree, by the whole
lint. No small part of the speculative en
thusiasm which found expression In the
operation In storks was based upon the
most hlieral construction of the supreme
court s decision In Its bearing on the whole
ibject of corporation control. The sapient
comment was heard amongst brokers that
the annulment of the Sherman anti-trust
w would follow as a natural consequence
from the principles laid down on the com
modities clause decision. Renewed sjafe-
guards for property and vested rights were
Inferred from the tenor of the opinion or
the court and t lie laying of a threat of
danger from the spread of legal rt-stralnt
was assumed from the necessary shaping
public pollcv to conform to the law.
Beyond these very general and loosely as
sumed consequences the Influence of the
decision was nerceptlble In many direc
tions.
Railroad net earnings for March were re
ported In great number and the favorable
comparison with March of last year was
of helpful effect on the speculation. The
relatively Ire level of last year's earnings.
Ith which the comnortsons were made,
was loet eight of. The rise in tne coun
try's bank clearings for April last was
looked upon as good evidence of trade ex
pansion. Estimates by official autnornies
several slates or the progress or tne
ropa during April were not convincing and
the government crop report on Friday-
looked to with eanneclal Interest. .
Industrial preferred stocks were espe
cially strong again, led by I'nl'ed States
ateel. preferred. This niovem" seemed
due to a belated recognition of the iktra
security enloyed by this class of s'naiea
and the high Income return asaJuded by
them In comparleon with other lnvetmnt
securities. The firm tone of the foreign
exchange market, hardening of the prl-

serves made no Impresnlon on the local
money market snd did not disturb the
speculative confidence In which the lnra-er

high as 17.90 for the best heavy. It will
be noted that the top especially was 6c
higher than yesterday. The fact Is, heavy
hogs were more sought afur and sold to
better sdvantage in most cases than the
light hogs, holders of which were genersll
quoting the market as only steady. The
market was rather slow st current prices,
but still the Mg bulk changed hands In
fair season In the morning.
Receipts were fairly liberal, but still t lie
total for the two davs shows a falling off
of almost 6.000 head, as compared with
the same days last week, but at the same
time there Is a small gain over a year ago.

CATl'lEJ There was another god run
of cattle this morning, making the total
for the two days 10,100 head, as against
8.700 last week and 4.700 a year ago. The
arrivals consisted very largely of corn-fed
steers. In fact. It Is a question If there
ever was a larger proportion of fed steers
in the yards than this morning.
As a result of the large offerings of beef
rattle the feeling this morning was weak
and a good many were anticipating a lower
market. Packers themselves seemed to be
Inclined to hold back a little with that Ide
In mind, but It turned out that the demand
was really better than expected. There
were some shipping orders In. which helped
and local packers themselves wanted quite
good many cattle. The result was that
the market opened with prices Just about
steady with yesterday, there being very
little change in any direction.
Cows and heifers were also In good de
mand and as the supply of that kind of
rattle waa very moderate, the market -was
generally about steady with yesterday and
the trade waa fairly active at prevailing
prices.
The stocker and feeder market was very
poorly supplied, there being few cattle
answering to that description on sale. At
the same time, there waa quit a little In
quiry and the offerings commanded good
strong prices, the same as they have every
day of late.

SHEHP Receipts were comparatively
liberal this morning, the number of cars
reported In adding up an odd twenty.
Practically all of the arrivals consisted
of shorn stock, there being only a sprink
ling of medium grade wooled stuff. Trade
was brisk at the opening, supplies changing
hands at values strong to 10c higher iharT
yesterday, in a rew cases, especially on
the really good kinds of clipped lambs, the
advance might be quoted even greater than
a dime, one or two lots moving at prices
that were 15c higher than yesterday. The
quality was good on an average. One
double deck of shorn Iambs sold at 17 50,
15c higher than yesterday on the same
quality. A single deck of natives were
good enough to make $7.56. and a choice
lot or Mexicans brought the top, $7.66. A
bunch of ernes were put over the scales at
15.85 and clipped wethers topped at 96.25. A
deck of spring lambs was good enough to
move at 910.00.
Several cars were lale in arriving and
as a resuit trade was somewhat slow after
the early supplies had been disposed of.
However, the demand at no time was back
ward and practically everything waa sold
In reasonably good season.

HOGS Hogs sold unevenly yesterday and
for that reason salesmen were differing
quite a little In their Ideas today. Thus,
while a good many were quoting their sales
as steady, a Ith some claiming that the
market waa barely steady, others were
pointing out losds that they figured were
ia higher than yesterday. In fact In order
to cover the situation It would be neces
sary to quote the market as steady to 60
