Ha., May 1 The Carnegie hero fund commission al Its regular quart erly meeting here today made awards to twenty-three persons fur deeds of heroism considered since the last meeting. The awards consists of sixteen brnnae and seven sliver medals, 114,000 In cash and an nultlties amounting to 112f a month. Among the awards were: John Carruthers of West Newton, Pa., awarded bronxe medal and 11.(00 to be ap pllcl to the purchase of a home. Carruth ers, a Baltimore and Ohio railroad engineer saw a boy of 'i years crawling across the track In front of hla train. Leaving the engine In charge of his fireman, Carruthers went through his cab window and to the pilot where he seised the boy and pre vented his being run over. Charles F. Meyer of New York City, warded a bronte medal and $i'J for dis ablement benefits. On April 6, lSOs, Misses Koslyn and Bessie Morris were entangled In the wreckage of an automobile which had beer, struck by a surface car and crushed against a pillar of the elevated rail way. W ith a ten gallon tank of gasoline about tu be ignited, Mr. Meyer rescued one of the girls and was about to release the other when a slight explosion hurled him to the street. He rushed back and aided the rescue of the other girl. The action was precipitated by a motion by Swan 1-arsnn that the con tract be awarded to the Omaha Klectrlc Light and Power company. Pnrt of the mem bers of the board desired to put the award over for another week to give the hihor organizations of the city, which had asked time to Investigate and express an opinion, the desired request. However, the que.i Hon was brought to s vote and the council divided evenly. Then the original motion of Swan lnrson tn award the contract was put and the council divided ns before and the motion was lost. No motion was put to award the contract to the South Omaha IJght and Power com pany, nnd When the matter comes up It is predicted tho award will be to tin Omaha Klectrlc Light and Tower conipm.y. Aside from tin- light contract the most cheerful item for a long time was brought out when the city clerk opened bids for the latest Issue of paving bonds. These were the K street paving bonds, JU.'JW); the Kast 4 street bonds. tl.700; and the West L. street bonds, tSS.flnn. The Security Pav ings Bank and trust company of Toledo. O., bid par and accrued interest with a premium of $1K5, S136 and for each Issue, respectively. The First National bank of Cleveland. O., bid on the J13,0 bonds a premium of 99 and on the t-Kt.000 Issue u premium of $284. The council promptly awarded the contract to the first bidder, the Security Savings Rank and Trust company. The city council split again on the appointment of the city pound master. The mayor appointed Fred Smith, a colored character of long residence in South Omaha. The council voted agalnat his ap proval. The mayor, therefore, appointed John Zukovsky and ho. was approved. Zukovsky filed with his application the names of about 1W friends who urged hla appointment. A large number of ordinances changing and re-establishing grade were Introduced. These changes will be at the following points: Thirty-sixth street, Monroe to Harriaon: Fortieth street, L to F; M street, Thirteenth to Twenty-fourth; F street, Roulevard to Forty-fourth; Twenty- j eighth street, Q to t. The maj-or appointed a number of the boards of appraisers for the adjustment of damages In these cases. The ordinance for tho changing of grade of J street and Twenty-second, also at Twenty-first, were paESed. A protest signed, as Is stated, by forty per cent of the residents, opposed a change of grade on Twenty-sixth street from O to H, and on II street from Twenty-fifth to Twenty-sixth. An ordinance was Introduced to open a street across the Burlington tracks at Fortieth street. This action was once be fore undertaken . and, waa in some man ner suddenly terminated, much to the dis approval of the resldenta of that locality. A resolution of the city council permit ted the contractors of the Mud Creek sewer to change the course of the sewer to a point fully one hundred feet farther portli In crossing under the I'tilon Pacific and the Rock Island railroad tracks. This action Is raid to take the sewer out of the bed of Jetter creek so that the company can better work during the expected wet season. The diameter of the sewer at this point waa enlarged six Inches, making It a full 11-foot cross section. Jay N. Williams appointed O. S. Ken nedy as one of his deputy tax commis sioner to take the city assessment In place of S. C. Shrlgley. who resigned. A protest waa raised against tho estab lishment of the city pound at Twenty-eighth and L streets. This was signed by thirty residents of the locality. The various departments, as the build ing Inspector, the sanitary Inspector and the live stock Inspector, made their monthly reports for April. Building opera tions for April Amounted to $21,K;0. The contract with the several railroad companies for the grade crossing at Twenty-fifth and V streets was approved. A resolution was passed asking that an other ordinance be prepared ordering a viaduct at F atret-t. School Hoard Reorganises. The South Omaha Board of Education held a short session last night, which was the annual meeting for the reorganization of the board. N. R. Carter was elected president to succeed himself. C. W. Knight was eleoted vice president. H. U. Klddoo was elected secretary. J. W. Mullen was made chairman of the claims committee. C. Vf. Knight was appointed chairman of the teachers' committee. Rudolph Yechout Is chairman of the supplies committee. TbS annual reports were read and ap proved. The report of the finances shows that the expense of the last year has amounted to $ IS8.165 or a per capita of $27.98 for each pupil In the schools. The board seemed very well pleased with the financial report. The treasury will now be replen ished by the addition of the money de rived from the Issuance of the saluon li censes. At all points the election of officers was marked by the utmost harmony and good feeling. The board will meet In special session next Monday night for the purpose of electing teachers for the ensuing year.' After adjournment. President N. B. Carter took the members of the board, the principal of the high school and the superintendent of the city schools to a little banquet prepared at the Burton res taurant. Labor Meeting Tonight.
