NEW 0RIL STOCKS AND BONDS Violent Fluctuation, in Reading Due to Commodities Law Decision.' DOWNWARD PLUKGE EARLY More tarefal Reading ki That FlaClas Mill Hare favorable Fffect a aiock Ad- re ace. h.r.ly. ; NEW YORK. May 3 The fbieut furtu- ations In Readlnc balked the assumption that the supreme court decision In tlie rommndtes clause case would prove with out stock market Influence In either di rection. Th market slipped Intr a condi tion of stagnation before the announcement of the decision and became almost equally lethargic In the period of perplexity fol lowing the first report of the scope of the decision The sentiment regarding the decision un derwent violent muta-lton plainly indi cated in the downward plunge In Reading on the first bold announcement that the provisions of the law were upheld and the violent upahoot which followed wken the conviction took shape that, while the. ternn of the law were upheld., th government cofentlnns regarding Its construction against the railroads were disallowed, ft was quickly decided that while railroads were disbarred from owning coaj wntcn they transported to market, there was no obstacle to their ownership of shares In commercial mining companies. This would leave railroad companies which ennaol mines already bv. this Indirect method In the name position they are now. while in the rase of the companies which own the mines directly It has been made an ele ment of strength In the market for their storks that they were supposed to be making plans to form separate companies to own the coal mines, with the shares to he distributed to the railroad stockTiolders. The extreme range In Reading was from 143H at the lowest to 15m at the high est, the latter figure representing the high est price touched since the boom In the stock in 190K. which culminated In a price of 1S4 In January of 19f3. There were Intermediate fluctuations of convulsive violence, which Invited the mrst unbridled speculation by the room traders, for whom the sudden chanros In the movement of the stork represented nothing1 but the blindest chance. The Reading movement wss (lie Index of the whole market, hut In lis most exaggerated terms. No other slock ap- rrnnehed It In point of activity or range or movement. The market gained perceptibly In breadth and strength however. In the later staees of the trading advancing. The disposition of the commodities clause. It was felt, put out of the way a factor that has heen iwfi-. hangln the market with repressive effect for months. The general effect or the de cision also was regarded as cheering and helpfu? for prnpertv and corporate Inter ests. TV" natural expression of cheerful ness by those Irterests Is to put up prices on stocks. Ten bunvancv and animation or the latter rr.a"-Vet nut out of mind fhe dull and heavy tone of the early dealing, al though It Is not certain that apprehension regarding tlie supreme court's action w.is alone responsible for the esrlv depression. The tsklnar of another million dollars In gold bars from the assay office for ship ment to Paris tomorrow showed a force of depletion of hunk reserves still !n onera. tlon. The 3 per cent call monev rate or last Friday left an expectation of possibly firmer money rates for a day nr two. No higher rate than 2 per rent was touched during- the dav and opinion on money nrket settled tirk Into conviction of pro longed ease. The promise of extended abundance of monev seemed to he the cause of sharp advances In a number of Industrial and stocks. Cnlted States steel leading; with a rise of 2 points to the record price of 117. The high rate of In vestment return on these stocks, with a period of Industrial expansion promised to add to the security, Is offered. as a rea son for thl movement. The war among the tmnk lines over import freight rates and the fear of an unfavorable allowing of pro gress of the crops In the forthcoming gov ernment report of condition had some In fluence on the early heavy tone. The out burst of speculative excitement following the commodities clause decision swept away all other conditions and the market was strong to the last. Uonds wtre lrreKtiur. As a rule salesmen claimed that they were selling in about the same notches as Saturday. On the other hand buyers claimed that, taking finality and everything Into account, their hogs were costing a little more. The strength seemed to be more on the good butcher loads than on anything elrm. The top on full loads wa no higher than Saturday. ..a being paid for pretty decent loads, but a piece of a load sold up to 17.25. As far as observed there wss nothing very prime on sale. While the market was not eapeclally ac tive, still there was a very fair movement and everything In sight changed hands In good season. J0. Av. Sk. Pr. N... Av. 88. Th market in many respects wa a repltltion of last Friday' elon. At the opening the move ment In supplies was brisk and offerings weighed r.p with very little argument over prices. Shorn stuff met With the better demand, th bed clipped lamb lling at 87.40. Thla Is the highest price paid this eason on short dock. The general mar ket on shorn supplies waa lt015c higher than last week. Clipped ewes topped at 15.76 and a load of clipped welhers were good enough to make 8o.2fi. Neither the advance was so marked nor the demand so active in the woo led depart ment. Only four cats of wooled iambs ware on ale, there being practically no ewes, wether or yearlings. Wooled offer ings moved at prices generally strong to 10c higher. The best wooled Ismbs here, which were only fairly good, sold at 18.30. It was generally conceded that a very choice band of Mexicans would bring as high ss 18.50 on this morning s market. Receipts In both the wooled snd shorn offerings were light, there being only twelve cars In all reported. Toward the latter end of the session trade look on an easier tone, and while there was no per ceptible depression In price. It required a greater effort to effect a movement In the balance of aupplies at the sdvance. Every thing, however, wss sold In pretty good season.
