CERVERA AS SEEN AT SANTIAGO

Defeat
Tn a tribute to the life work of Admiral
Cervera of Spain. George E. Graham. cor
respondent with the American fleet block
ading Santiago, thus recalls the appearance
of the Spanish commander before and after
the disastrous defeat of July J, 1R9K:
. I saw him first through my binoculars
from the forward bridge of the Brooklyn,
where I rushed when the signal was made,
"The enemy is escaping." His beautiful
hip, the Maria Teresa, painted black with
a gold and yellow crest of Spain on Its
bow, looked as If It had been newly var
nished for the occasion. Above It floated
the great ensigns of Spain, flngs of double
Ilk with heavy bullion embroidery, as If
It were coming out to. a feast Instead of a
fight. As It turned Its prow west, I saw
him for a second on the forward bridge,
tn hla Immaculate white, with his binocu
lars glued to his eyes, taking a look at the
opening between the Brooklyn and the
Iowa, where the Massachusetts should
have been, but which position It had left
to go down for coal. Then the shells began
to hit his ship, and. aa they exploded, he
was covered In a mass of dense smoke. I
aw him no more during the fight.
I saw the old admiral the next day
aboard the Harvard, a prisoner of war, and
waiting to be taken to Annapolis. I went
aboard the Harvard with Commodore
Schley.
His short, rather pathetic figure, with a
white, almost womanlike skin, not at all
of the Spanlah hue, and with clear, bright
eyea snapping from under heavy eyebrows,
was clad In an ill-fitting pair of blue
toousera which some officer on tho Glou
cester had contributed to cover his naked
ness, for when he was picked out of the
water he simply had on hl underwear. A
loose-black, alpaca coat, which somebody
rise had given, a straw hat a ailze or two
too large for him, jind a pair of white
canvas "sneaks," like the ordinary Bailor
weara. made up his attire. With all this
ludicrous dress, he was still dignified In
looks and action when ho ro to greet
Commodore 8chly. and the two conversed
In the purest Castlllan. the defeated ad
miral smiling with J'ty over the fact that
Schley could speak tvs native language
volubly. When they had finished, I sat
down alongside and talked with Itlm. He
spoke fulrly good English, and told me
frankly that he did n't expect to defeat
the American fleet when he came out He
said, In rather low voice. "I was ordered
out. My government ordered me to come
out, and I obeyed. I knew your force was
superior, but I hoped to get one cr two of
our ahlps' .away. Unfortunately, your
Brooklyn and your Oregon were too faat
for us, and my ships did not aeem to be
able to reach their, accredited apeed. But
It Is the fortunes of war." he ;1d wearily.
"You have great sailora and great gunner
and grMat ships, and you are entitled to ail
that tomes from the victory. I shall go
back tn Spain." And then he added, with a
little note of doubt in hla voice, "I hope
my people will believe I did my best." He
held ut his hand, and the interview was
over.

enough 1 known to Justify the belief that
thla lonely spot waa the scene of a tragedy.
and that when th mow melts another re
markable case will be recorded of a dog s
devotion to his master, even In death.
Before the first snowfall of last winter
Frank Hathoway, a linotype operator em
ployed by the Wallace Press, crossed the
trail over the St. Joe divide when return
ing from hunting trip. While passing
through a large gnowth of timber below
the divide, ha waa startled by hearing the
report of a ahotgun fired several times
as fast as It could be loaded and then a
rifle chimed in. About forty shots were
fired In rapid succession. Mr. Hathaway
aw no on In the wild, lonely region, but
spoke of the Incident to a prospector named
Livingston, living In a secluded cabin
several miles down the trail.
That night Livingston heard the plaintive
howling of a dog coming from far up th
mountain. Again on the succeeding night
the dog howled, and on the fourth night
after the (hooting a strange dog was seen
sulking about Livingston's cabin, as If
In search of food. He fled at Livingston's
approach, but meat left outside the shack
disappeared during the night. Every night
ince that time the dog has been fed, but
never will he let any one approach him
- A few week after the shooting the first
bllazard of the winter swept over the
mountain, and after three days of storm
the ground waa covered with six feet of
now. Still the lonely dog made his trips
to th cabin, esch time returning to the
mountain top. When snow had succeeded
now and the cold, clear weather of the
later part of January had crusted the
now so that It would bear the weight of
a man, Livingston climbed the mountain
to discover the hiding place of the dog. The
dog's frequent trips made a trail which
win plainly vlaioie and after climbing a
mile above tha cabin the dog was found
lying In the shelter of a bush, making
his bed In the snow. , He fled at the
approach of Livingston, but returned when
the man waa departing.
Frequent visits were paid the mountain
top by Wallaoe cltisena when Mr. Living
ston mad known the story of the dog's
faithful vigil on the barren, lonely crest.
The mystry become the topic of general
conversation In Wallace, and old-time
miner and pioneer residents have agreed
In the belief that the body of the dog's
master lies bur tied beneath the snow.
Ranger Pulaakf Of the Coeur d'Alene forest
'reserve organized a party of more than 100
men, armed with shovels and prepared. to
clear tha snow from the spot, the dog was
guarding. Th snow was found to be. seven
feet deep, and although the men by dint
of arduous toll, cleared a amall plot of
ground, their search availed little. Aa the
bush in which the dog sought small shelter
waa the only one to be found In a radius
of several hundred feet, the members ot
the searching party decided that the body
of tha man may be at any point In this
barren territory.
Four months have elapsed since the dog
began his vlrgll and the reports of the two
guns resounded on the lonely mountain.
Contrsry to every trait in canine nature
except that of faithfulness, the dog has
remained at this one spot, sleeping In snow
and Ice and traveling down the steep
mountain aide for his dally meal. Every
man In Wallace la of tha belief that when
July' hot sun clears the mantle of snow
covering the bleak height the body of the
dog'a master will be uncovered.
Wives, relatives and friends of six
miners, who have myaterioualy disappeared
from lonely mountain prospects In which
they were supposed to work all winter, are
anxiously awaiting th approach of sum
mer, each fearing that their loved one is
burled beneath the snow. Annually many
men are loat In the first blizzards of whi
ter, and although searching parties have
hunted for each of the missing, their re
sults have been fruitless, and It remains
for the thaw of summer to rVeal the win
ter's tragedies Seattle Times.
