The principal factors In the situation was the lmnroved demand for flour and cash wheat, tt was reported that the demand for winter w;ieat flour here was display Ing more life and a dispatch from Minneapolis stated thac sales of flour there lata yesterday were the largest m some time. At . the same time the cash grain wa said to be In active demand by miller at all the leading grain centers In this country. NEW YORK, April tS. There-was a striking change in tha tone of the sincx market today from that of yesterday. ITkss moved up aggressively and In many Instances rapidly. The demand waa large and widely distributed and the upward movement embraced the list quite generally. Buying waa congested, how ever. In some of the stocks that are Hie greatest favorites with the trader and are most influential Inr their sympathetic effect on speculative sentiment. Reading, the Harriman stocks - and I'nlled State Steel were the lenders of the movement and no more effective leaders are to be found In the list. The board room element explained the move ment as being due to a scarcity In the flowing supply of stocks, which 1 only another way of saying that owners were holding for higher prices. The United States Steel statement of earnings for the lsst quarter waa of favorable affect and that stock was- conspicuous In the day's strength. The quarter's earnings were nesrly 11,000.000 In excess of esti mates current yesterday on the atock market. The falling off In tonnage of unfilled orders on hand waa discussed with some dissatisfaction In view of the frequent reports of rush of new business attracted by the reduction In prlcea. There seemed to be more Importance at tached to the report of an advance In prices of several grades of finished steel reported yesterday to bave been made by the Carnegie Steel company in spite of the tact that those reports were quail fled In some degree by explanations of the scope of the new order. This evi dence of a turn In tha steel trade situa tion from one of receding values to a rise seemed to appeal to sentiment as highly significant of the Improvement in the trade conditions. Foreign buying In this market waa an Influential element In the day's market, the sentiment of ef fect being considerable beyond the ab sorption of stocks which was effected. The change of sovereigns In Turkey, al though known to have occurred yesterday, wss taken more account of today. Con tinental centers bought stocks in Lon don on account of the Turkish situation and the effect wa passed On to the New York market There aeemed to be less apprehension of a flurry in money rates Incident to tha May I financial settlements. The near approach of the period ana tne tranquillity of the call money market halnod te this feallna. There waa a brisk movement in the Oould group of stocks In concert and this wa taken to Indicate an organized" market support for those stocks based on suppositions that the plan for financing the ieeds of those properties for new capital was be ing matured. Meaning was more re ponslva than yesterdsy to the prospect of an agreement between anthracite operatora and miners over wages.
