Wltn the exception of .a brief1 period at Hie opening, when ' prices, rangea oaly a trine aoove the low- point or the previous ses sion, the market displayed considerable strength, despite the preponderance nf bearish froaalp in the day's naas. Buying i f more than 1 .000.000 bushels of the July delivery by one of the leading elevator Interests here was the feature of trading and One of the chief reasons for the sub-a'-antlal upturn In prices. Additional rain was rperted throughout the winter wheat belt In thl country. Including Oklahoma, where a d rough had prevailed for long time, while In the northwest the weather was said to be favorable for aeedlng, with, the exception of a portion of South Da kota, where enow had Interfered with farm werk. The excellent outlook for the Euro pean crop alio had a depressing effect, (na Prussian report, which showed a de terioration of 10 points In the condition of the crop of that country, compared with trie corresponding time a year ago. was the principal bullish Influence. April ft - Exit frne con ruslon of the speculative temper was auid by the action of the atock matrktl during the earlier part of today and the rult waa a declining precipitation in Hie HpaI .?" W,tn Professional traders and the adop, tlon of a waiting attitude to see what the mysterious movement mlsht nortrnrt Suspicion of manipulative purposes In some of the most obvious movements In creased the feeling cf doubt and-uncertainty. Alternating declines and advancesj kept the market In such a wavering slatt as la rarely witnesaed. Some cf the early selling of storks was reported aa coming openly from sources that have been credited with the leadership of the advancing move ment The suspicious trading element nw In thla selling a device of the bulla to take the market away from tne bonrs and to force the latter to sell short at low figures with the malign purp. of forcing them to cover at corresponding loss. The mars, instead of tsklng courage from this appear ance of liquidation of long stocks, there fore took alarm and bought to rover th lr ehort contracts. At the periods when prices were advancing tbmre waa equally suspi cious scrutiny of the selling and algns that long stock waa coming out would be fol lowed by quick reactions. The tfek of detecting motive of uch assumed sub tllity proved so pusxllng as to lead to no definite conclusion and simply repressed the activity of tho market. Two Itema of the day'a news were of posi tive Influence and these were of conttury effect. Announcement of plans for a sum mer trip abroad by K. H. Harrlman and the modified restrictions on the Erie bond issue by the New York Public Bervloe com mission were unexpected development. The rumnrs regarding Mr. Ilsrrlmsn's luulth, Which were given renewed force by this report, caused some selling of shares In the companies In which he Is most closely as sociated. The effect on Cnlon Pacific was pronounced and the especial weakness of New York Central also was traceable to the large expectatione that hve been formed of the effects that have been looked for from Mr, Hartlman'a future sctlvltles In the management of that railroad. The relaxed requirements on the Erie to be complied with to secure permission for the proposed bond Issue were considered suffi cient to ensure the success of the proposed financial plan. The Brie slocks recwonded end there wss some sympathetic effect In ether parts of the list. A special source of speculative confusion wss the erratic fluctuations In Reading. This stock might have decided the wavering course of the market at any time, but Its constant shift ing left tho balance undecided. Thtre was considerable comment on the taking of gold here for shipment to Hol Isr.d, which Is a very unusual proceedings, txcl.ange operations with Holland being conducted usually through the medium of London banks. It was Inferred from this gold movement that Dutch Investors In American securities had been sending their holdings to market In New York, attracted by the high level of existing prices. The Incident made a decided Impression on speculative sentiment, cwlng to the sub stantlal character attributed to the Btutch financial Insight. The firmer tone of the local money market for call loans gives warning that uninterrupted absorption or banking resources will bring to an nd the period of pltlhorlc ease on money markals. A decline In sterling exchange rate at Perls wss towards the point cal Ing fur gold exports from Now York, but the sterling exchange rate here made a eon pensstoiy decline. Weather conditions were more favorable on grain crop pros pects and anxiety was les acute over the fate Of the winter wheat crop. The numer ous variations durtrg the day resulted In only small net change In prices at he end nt th 1AV. Bond were Irregular. Total sales, par valtie, ti.7l'J,0O0.
