Chad nick's Father Prophesied that Old Mealcaa Wr Wtrrsa Woald Lead Federal Troops sje) Victory. H. L Chadwick. 14 Arlington block. Omaha, haa a letter dated Washington, May 24, 18X1, which was written by his father, Samuel Chadwick, to a friend, E. 8. Moore, Three Rivers, Mich., giving him a description of conditions at the" scat ot government at that time, about the time of tho beginning of the civil war, and tell ing rather Impressively of the tragic death of Colonel Ellsworth. Mr. Chadwick waa then In the government service at Waah Ington and later was adjutant of the Eleventh Michigan, and still later recruited tha Twenty-eighth Michigan after' the battle of Chlckamagua. His letter reflects the serene confidence In the onion army under General Scott, but la not prophetic aa to the latter. Here is the context of the letter: WAR DEPARTMENT, WASHINGTON, May 24, IKtll. Hon. E. 8. Moore. Three Rivers. Mich. Dear Sir; Thinking that perhaps you would be glad to hear from the "seat of war." I will pen a few of the Incident; transpiring In and around the capital of the nation. These are Irdeed stirring times. The wholo power of the government la engaged to put down this unholy strife. This par ticular department more than any other Is overrun with business. Dispatches are ar riving every minutn detailing the operation of our own aa well as the enemy's army. I am In the chief clerk a room and have charge of the filing and answering of some of the many dispatches received. A telegraph machine Is operating on my table and us one dispatch after another Is received, hand It Immediately to the-secretary of war, who Is Indefatigable and hard at work from morning till night, and even Into . the dark hours and till almost day light, till tired nature demands a respite. Our armv has finally commenced Its ad vance Into the enemy's country. Last night about 1 o'clock Colonel Ellsworth, with his "pet lambs," started with four field pieces to take Alexandria, about aix miles from here. Stop! A message comes In with the report that arter tne surrender or Aieinnurm lint was fired from the roof of an adjoin Ins buildlns and the gallant Colonel Ella worth was shot dead on the spot. Not a gun was fired In taking the city, as all were quietly reposing, adoui irni"- Uns were taken prisoners and 4.000 stand of arms. This is a great victory, but the fall of Colonel Ellsworth casts a gloom over ull lla was a areat favorite of all the officers of the government and 111a loss can't be easily supplied. Ills men will be avenged to a certainty. General Butler will march on Norfolk Immediately. In fact before this teaches you, l nless some tilings shall happen to the contrary yuu will have the news by telegraph. At other noints operations will commence and an active campaign be opened. The result, of course, will be victory at every st-p. General Scott, the gallant old veteran who never made a single military mistake In his life, has arranged this matter with a skill unparalleled, and after all la gained and the giorintia Stars and Stripes float again triumphantly over every slate In the union, lie will go down to his grave with more glory than has ever fallen to the lot of any mortal being. 8uch Is a brief history of operations here. You get more by telegraph from Qther parts of the union than we do here, ex cept such as passes through thla depart ment, which la secret. This Is known to us In the Immediate vicinity of the tele graph operator, but time will give It, with all particulars, to the country. 1 should be glad to hear from you If your time is not too much occupied, and l will post you occasionally as I have time. Yours truly, 8. CHADWICK. V. B. : 'lf there Is anytiiing you thnk the people would like to see In print, you are at liberty to publish In the Chronicle over the signature of Amertcus. ' M. W. A.
