April 1.-A large part of the loss sustained on the severe slump In wheat prices yesterday wss regained today, and tnt market closed strong, with prices (0 V lower to Mi'Hc higher, compared with the previous close. Corn and oats displayed unusual strength, the May delivery of the former touching a new high point for the season. Provisions also closed firm. The wheat market was an extremely choppy affair during the early part of the session, but during the final hour senti ment crystallised Into decided bullishness, brought about chiefly by heavy purchases of the July option. Trade in the May de livery waa brisk at the outset, longs being free- sellers. Later, however, this option was neglected In favor of the more deferred futures. Pit sentiment today was created principally by foreign ad vices. Official statistics Indicated that the wheat movement this week from Ar gentina and Australia was at low ebb the exports from the former country being -,344.000 bushels, compared with IJiS.OW bushels the corresponding time a year ago. This was generally considered a sure Indl cstlori that weekly statistics next Monday would reveal a marked falling off In the world's movement and In the amount on passage. A message from Duluth claming that the break In prices yesterday at Win nipeg had resulted In axles there of thirty two boatloads of Manitoba wheat for ex port, slso Inspired additional bullish feel ing. 8alcs of cash wheat here were limited, but the southwest reported continued de mand, with prices about at the high point of the year. After pursuing an uneventful course, compared with the turbulent scenes of the previous session, the market broke sharply toward the end of the first hour on liberal profit-taking In Mav. The price of that option dropped from 1.27Hto 11.251i in a short space of time, while Julv sold off more than lc, declining from 11.1674, to Jl.liS. Leading bulla promptly came to the suj.port of the July option and the price of thnt month quickly raollled, but the May delivery was less buoyant. The top rr July wis resched at 1.17. Closing trades on that month were made at 11.17. k title May finished at 11.27V September so id between !l.(Kit$1.07. and closed at 11.07 4. Corn regained all of the loss sustained In the slump of the previous session and the May delivery advanced to a new high point for the crop, sales being made st t9H. During the day. May sold be tween 8SIc and closed at 69fcti8ttc. a gain of compared with the previ ous close. The feature of trade In the oats market was active buying of the September de livery, based on delay to seeding by wet weather. That option showed a net gain for the day of lSo. The market, in general, wss strong all day. . Buying of a large quantity of lard and ribs by an Influential local packer, caused moderate strength In provisions. The up turn In the price of coarse grain also had a bullish effect. At the close prices were unchanged to 7c higher. The leading futures ranged as follows: Hastings. In fact, there were only a few scattering loads ofered for sale. What few there were changed hands In good sesson in the morning at prices nominally steady with yesterday. To quote the market on beef steers todsy as steady with yesterday means that the market is really around 26c lower than it waa a week ago, some classes showing more loss perhaps than that and others not quite so much. Cows snd heifers, while stesdy with yes terday, are 15f(f20o lower than last week. The very best fat cows and heifers have not shown as much decline as some grades while stock cows snd heifers, that Is. any thing thst would do for feeder buyers have commanded about steady prices owing ,h vfy 1 demand for thst class. The kind that has suffered most are such i?S;; ,and h"f'"S ss were selling at about 14.76(86.00. This kind of stuff Is In many cases 26c lower than last week. As noted yesterday, so few feeders have been received this week that fully stead' prices have been maintained In spite of the bre-'ik on fat cattle. Tha week closes with everything cleaned up. While there were not enough supplies to make a market, everything ass cleaned up at ths opening at prices steady with v.ii,.m. quality considered. Ewes of a pretty rood kind moved at $6.00 and western lambs were good enough to sell at 17.76. For . past couple days shorn supplies have been urn a on tae rnaraet. This mnrn ne . couple loads of shorn ewes and two cars of hold over clipped lambs met with ready sales at $4.10 and $6.25. respectively. uwing to light receipts, buvlns: tnlnnt generally held quality as a secondary con sideration, and for the first time this week tha receipt platter was llteiallv llrke.1 clean. The market this week has not been In ths best of condition, looking st It from a seller's standpoint. Kxceptlng Monday and yesterday, when trsde took on a healthier tone, ths general market has favored tha packers. Heavy receipts snd bearish sen timent, csused by unfavorable eastern ad vices, were largely responsible for slow movement In supplies and sllghtlv lower values.
