Feataree of the Trading and Closing
Prleea oa Board of Trade.
CHICAOO. April 8. Wheat prices con
tinued their record-breaking advance 011
tha Board of Trade today, the May delivery
soaring to 11.26 and the July to H.
I. 1274 per bu. .The advance, however, waa
not malntatnod. the market cloning Irregu
lar, with prleea o lower to i'tc higher,
compared with yesterday's final quotations.
Corn and oala closed weak and provisions
firm.
There waa no such strain In tha wheat
trade today as noted on the previous ses
sion, but at times, however, the market
displayed considerable activity. Instead of
an upward jump of a cent or two on In
Itlal tranaactlona. there was a calmer feel
ing today and the market showed some
signs of a reaction from the extreme buoy
ancy of the laat few days. Opening prh-es
were a shade to c. below the final fig
urea of yesterday, May being at S1.2ft4?1.2S4,
and July at 11 HH'filU'e. Early trading whs
of an ordinary character and prices worked
a trifle lower owing to quite general sell
ing and absence of ' any substantial sup
port. The big volume of business was In
the July delivery, which Is now regarded
bv many as an old crop month. After May1
had sold off to 31.244 and Julv to 11.11,,
sentiment auddenly became bullish again.
Within the space of three minutes July had
advanced to tl.l24(EP1.12T and May to
II. 2M. Tti upturn waa partly due to a
prediction made by the leading hull that
this country will not raise 400.0fl0.0no bush
els of winter wheat thle season. The buy
ing furore subsided as quickly as It had
developed and prleea aoon reacted again
on realising salea. Distant deliveries, how
ever, were relatively much stronger than
the May or July optlona and showed only
slight declines from the extreme high
points. Th market cloaed somewhat un
settled, tha May and July deliveries being
lower and September and December higher,
compared with . the previous close. Final
quotations on May were 31.24. July closed
at tl.U61.UV
Sharp declines occurred tn corn prices
owing to heavy realising sales, particularly
of the July delivery. One leading concern
la aa!d to have sold more than 1,000,000 bu.
of that option during the day. May aold
between Ac and 67c. and July between
He and Ssc. The close was weak, with
May off V. at 6rWc, and July 'waa down
HHc, at 65c
Oata experienced a further break In prloes.
chiefly In sympathy with the slump . In
corn. At the cloae prleea were unchanged
to c lower, compared with the prevloua
close. Final quotations on, May were at
MHc. and on July at 47Ae.
Provisions developed considerable ' firm
ness after an easy start. Prices at the
close were a ahade to 10c higher.
The Board of Trade will be cloaed tomor

NEW YORK. April S.-The dav's pvo
proceedlngs In the arock market exempli
fied the adage that "every dog tuts
his dsy." the stock exchange's special
artn pt at Ion of the term "dog" making the
old aaylng apt. The market gave evety
evidence at an rarly stage of a disposi
tion to curtail operations on the eve of the
three days' recess. The occasion was
se'sed. however, by numerous rxols to
rush. into promlnece. Innumerable favorites
and to p ish them upwards by violent ad
vances. This sudden advance of strength
was acoompsnled by nothing In th news
to account for It, either of a general tenor
or of special application to the stocks
affected.
There was little even in the wav ot
rumors to explain the appearance In the
apotHght of stocks, which have stood in
the background during all tho period of
activity of stocks of larger issues and
more representative eharscter. Some others
have not appeared on the tape at all for
days or weeks past. One of the day's
news reports was that the Hughes commis
sion to lnvestlgste exchangee had com
pleted Its report snd thst no recommenda
tion of legislation to restrict trading In
stcck exchange would be Included. Whether
the unostentatious appesrance of the an
nouncement and the astonishing variety of
the day's movement In obscure and pooled
stocks had any connection may afford an
Interesting subject for conlesture. It waa
the subject of remark during the sessions
cf th commission that pool activities were
under discront restraint and sensational
price movements W9ire a rarity. The sub
stsntial body of the stock list was quies
cent today, but firm. Each ebullition like
that of today la accepted usually as a sign
of degeneration In the speculation and a
harbinger of tho end of a movement. The
market showed Its recent disposition to
ignore bad signs, however, and there wss
no urgent pressure to get out of stock
holdings over the holldsy interval. The
stock market kept one eya on the wheat
market and saw evidence there to confirm
tha belief that th government crop report
did not promise well for the winter wheat
crop. The reassembling of the conference
between the) anthrsclte operators and the
representatives of the mtnrrs wer hope
fully regarded ss promising a settlement.
Th coalers continued to benefit from this
View.
The estimate of the currency movement
Indicated that the money auppllos would
be Increased by the tlmo stock market op
erations are resumed on Monday next. Re
ceipts on balance from the Interior thus
far this week are reported to have reached
aa large an amount a the total from that
source for all of laat wreck. Money there
fore, continuing exceedingly eaay. Dis
count declined In tone, but rose In Paris
and th London exchange at Pari alao
declined. Taken In connection with any
further advance in 8terl1ng exchange here,
this might lead to resumption of gold ex
ports from New York to Paris. Such a
prospect ' would b viewed with entire
equanimity by the New Trk financial
world. A good deal of encouragement la
felt over the marked improvement in the
government finances, lsrgely by reason of
the expansion In customs receipts. The
United State treasury, in consequence
flnda Itself with such resources that sn
early Issue of government bonds Is con
sidered to b an unlikely necessity. The
profit-taking sales at the end of the day
subtracted about aa much from prices of
the principal stocks as had been added
by th advance, leaving the only notable
change of the day In th class of stock,
which made the feature of the day.
Bonds were firm. Total sales, par value,
37.706.OuO. United States bonds unchanged

There was no very great change in tne
market on cow and heifer, still what
