Th danger of running out of margin

too daring speculator are taken Into ac
count and ar responsible for such periods
of hesitation aa were perceptible during
much of today ealon. although there
waa a atrong recovery before the end of
th day. An additional unsettling influence
waa tha expectation of a decision In the
casa to test the commodities clause of the
Hepburn law. The supposition was strongly
held that with the reconvening of the su
preme court after the spring recess there
would be found amoneat th araiiniiuiinn
of oplnlona. usually delivered bv the court
after euch a cloae period, the one deciding
in conatuutionailty of thle much dis
cussed provision, on which 1 believed to
hlnga the right of the anthracite carrier
to control their own mines. The disposition
waa plainly manifest to reduce market
commitments as the hour approached for
the asKembllng of the supreme court. The
fluctuation In Reading, meantime, became
very feverish. Then followed a period of
extreme dullness in the entire market until
the announcement came that the decision
waa onca again proposed. It would have
been considered a relief to have this mat
ter finally diapoaed of. aa it la considered
that It will exerclae a restraint of speeu
nr.lv Ptlvltv long It Is undecided.
With the certainty of a postponement of
the decision st least another week there
rollowed eome revival xt animation In the
market anT repurchase of stocks sold In
the morning. Ssturday's prlr recovery
and the tone of advlcea aent out bv com
mission men over the week-end reaulted
in considerable accession of buying orders
when the market opened. The further Im
provement In tha financial conditions
abroad brought an addition to the demand
for American securities from that source
also. The market proved so broad and
offered such power of absorption that there
waa a free distribution of holdings In the
forenoon by the skilled element In the
speculation which appreciates the value of
taking advantage of such an opportunity
to widen the field of holdings and to ef
fect a process of digestion of profits. The
selling to realise had Its Inevitable effect
of checking the rise and wa followed by
the hesitating period of the mid-season.
In the latter erforts to start the market
up again a good deal of attention was
given to individual stocks with a view to
their sympathetic effect on the general
list. Some of the lower grade stocks were
made prominent In this movement, reflect
ing the progress of the speculative ex
ploitation down through the list.
Outside the supreme court session, not
much attention wss paid to any news.
There seemed some Impression that the
beginning of argumenta in the government
suit againat the Standard Oil comnany
might act as a restraint on the specula
tion. This week's government report on
crop conditions Is regarded a of great
Importance for the light It will throw on
the stste In which winter wheat has

Ff sheep this morning
nualltv of the arrival.
waa not goon tn an average on moat
Caya during the laat week or two. In fct
there wa quite a sprinkling of stuff on the
trtjthy order. The arrival consisted very
Isrgely of lambs, while the supplv of weth
ers, yearlings and ewe were rather small.
Owing to the moderate offerings of ho-i
the market wa generally ateady, with
1 retty decent kind of yearlings touching
17.26. old wethers st $4.40 and ewes at $8.00.
Inferior kinds were pretty dull sellers
However, the better grades were cleaned
up in good season.
Lamb were slow throughout the session
and price were generally 10W16C lower
than last week. Buyers did not appear to
oe in any nurry about filling orders and
the trade lacked the life and snnp usual at
this point. A pretty decent kind of lambs
sold up to t7.78, with clipped at 66.86. There
were a few spring lambs among the re
ceipt this morning, the best thst have been
I if re so far thia season. They sold a high
as $11.60.
