April 1-The new high record for the season for all deliveries was estab lished In the wheat market today when the jr uniiuu auia up 10 ti.a nna July to $1.084,. The new high point for May was within Ho of the best price touched during the celebrated Gates deal In 1905. The market closed strong with prices 4io tower to HiSo higher compared with the previous close. Corn, oats and provisions aiso closed firm. Rallying from a rather weak tone at the atart, the wheat market became exceed Ingly strong and prices were easily forced Dsyond the high point of the season re cornea on tne previous session. The ma jority' of traders In the pit expected reaction irom the nigh price which pre vailed yesterday and In this respect their expectations were realised, us the market opened at declines of 44ic to A4iHc. The weakness at the start was due tj the heavy tone of European markets, particularly that ' at Liverpool, which was bearish ly affected oy unexpectedly liberal exports for th( week from Argentina and Australia. Lead lng bulls gave the market good support aariy in the day and a firm tone soon de veloped which became strong aa the ses ion advanced. More damage crop reports were received, which helped to strengthen the market, but the chief reason for the bucyancy was the strongly Increasing de mand for the cash grain. Cash sales of 106,004 bu. were closed here and a charter , was closed to ship NJO.OOO bu. more at the opening of navigation. St. Louis and lun- ','ui -City also' reported brisk bidding for the cash grain. - From 8119H. Uie' luw point at the opening, the May delivery ad vanced to. $1.21, while July sold up from H OT1, to JI.OSH. There was some reaction later In the day, owing to profit-taking, but the market, with the exception of the December delivery. In which month there was very little trading, closed firm. Final quotations on May were at $1.204 and on July fl.OSlM.OSVt. The corn market was helped materially by the bulge In wheat and by the popular bullish sentiment prevalent In the grain markets generally. The close was firm Ht net gains of c to iflSo, May being at I74c and July at Vfiti6Hc. Oata exhibited considersble strength, be ing Influenced by the sdvsnce In wheat and :orn. The market closed firm at net gains if c to 4-.rc. with May at &WyS'-c and luly at 48V,aio. Provisions were easy early In the day. but later became strong. The professional trading element on the floor of the Stock exchange has been distrutful of the rise in prices and lins "felt lor tne lop. con stantly by putting out short contracts. Previous to today they have oeen lorcca to cover shorts at a loss, driven In by substantial resistance of the market to depression. The trend of the marsei was noi utit-r- mined until after the first hour, the ao sorptlon power being still manifest st that time when the largo seinng itui-h .-ruic to be met by almost equally heavy buy ing. After a period of quietude the mar ket began then to recede on comparatively I ght transactions, thus demonstrating the withdrawal of SUDDort. While lluuldatioii was not urgent iU the beginning of this drop, the widening of the declines began tn iiRln.lff Hton Ioas orders and to uncover msrglns. which brought out Inrge addi tional selling orders. The reaction was ss much lacking in dcflnlteness to account fnr It as has been the week's advance. The most effective argument of the bears was that the rise had proceeded far enough to call for reaction In the normal prog ress of a speculative movement., the re ductlon of the long account by realizing sales, the passing of stocks from strong to .eak hands, the vulnerability of the market attack with the bulling of a weak following and the Improvement to result from shaking off the weak bulls by ft dip In prices were all heard as arguments in the technlcsl discussion of the market. The Interview of K. H. Harrlman with the newspaper men yesterday deprived the hulls of some of the ammunition they have relied on by the frankness of some of his admissions. Rsther definite assertions were in circulation yesterdsy, which per sisted In London this morning, that an advance In the Union Pacific dividend to 12 per cent had been determined1 on and in Southern Pacific to 7 per rent. Mr. Harri man's flat assertion thst no dividend In creases were tn contemplation In cither case took away this motive for buying the stocks at advancing prices. Some influ ence was felt' also from a rumor of a se rious attack of the king of England, which had caused some weakness of securities before it was authoritatively contradicted by the advices to the Associated Press. Sentiment regarding the steel trade un derwent some backset with the considera tion that the statement of earnings for the first uuarter of the year, due to appear uurlng the month, must make a poor show ing, while for the current quarter, owing to the rut In prices and tfce. comparatively light orders even at the reduced prices, the earnings may bo still less satisfactory. There was a reduction In the price of cop per also at the New York Metal exchange and In London, which served to dampen the confidence in reviving demand In that trade. Importance attaches, from a spec ulative standpoint, to the reconvening of the supreme court on Monday next. In view of the pending decision on the Hepburn law commodities clause test case. Profes sions of confidence heard in the neighbor hood of the Slock exchange for several days that this decision would not affect stocks, whatever It might be, subsided to day with the approach of the session of the court. Large Influence was accorded this factor In the later break In the mar ket. Bonds were Irregular, value. $5,336,000. United unchanged on call. On the other hand, common and Inferior light loads were rsther slow sellers, especially on the close. The movement was not par ticularly active, and still the hogs kept changing hands a few loads at a time, until pretty much everything was disposed of In very fair season. A considerable pro portion of all the hogs sold at $6.66ovM.86 and on up to $6.96 for good heavy hogs. The receipts today were not very heavy, only eighty-seven cars being reported in. This made the total for the week 46,216, as against 49,906 for the same days lust week and 64,284 head for the same days two weeks ago. it might he well, however, In this connection to note that receipts are running very much ahead of a ar ago, the record for the corresponding five days of last year showing only 28.187 head received.
