NEW TORK. March I7.-Th latent
forcea which have been gathering In the
stock market Issued more conspicuously
today and carried vigorously and quite
comprehensively upwards. There waa no
eonaplcuou change In the newa to account
for the fresh upward Impetus, but the con
stant manifestation of Indifference to un
favorable new mad a growing Impression
on siaculatlve sentiment and encouraged
the profeaalonal element to embark on
bolder operation for an advance.
Tha dy'e market wa ascribed still' to
professional Initiative In large parts, but
operation were conducted with much
greater freedom. Tha continued carclty
of stacks made the upward movement easy
and It gained force aa It proceeded, the
driving In of belated ahorta oonduclng
much to the more volatile stage of the
movement. Minor low grade storks were
first affected, but the higher grade specu
lative favorite cam into the movement
and th whole market broadened out ma
terially after the hesitation wa overcome.
The prospect of a coming period of world
wide ease of money Is a factor In the situ
ation which Is counted upon ' to stimulate
speculation. With the completion of the
coming April 1 settlement the London
market look for a notable relaxation In
the Itnerost ratts and a probable reduc
tion In th official discount rate of the
Bank of England. The outgo of gold
from (New Tork seems to have terminated
and New Tork borrower find it possible
to secure funds to advents Re In foreign
marketa. The temporary slight hardening
of money rates in New Tork also hss
given place to renewed easing tendency.
Speculative operators were Inclined to
meke much of the reported earlv return
of H. H. Hnrrlman to th financial district
a a press of active steps in various
enterprises In contemplation for the frop
ertles connected with his name. Tha pres
ence In his company of President Louis
Hill of the Great Northern added to the
roeculatlve Impression made by reports of
his movements. The half monthly decrease
of 8,307 In the number of Idle freight
cara reported and helpful factor In the
day' advance. The rise continued with
increasing animation and buoyancy up
to the very end of th day. There waa
some discrepancy In th decrease In the
dally average of loans reported by the
bank and in the actual Increase In that
Item on Friday of over tlo.000,000. The
trust company statement . also showed a
liberal exnanslon of credits. The forces
at work for replenishments of the money
market are so numerous that the lowering
of the banking surplus for the week re
ceived little attention.
Bonds were steady. Total sale, par
value, t2.4S4.00a United State 3 coupons
have advanced H tcr cent on call during
the week.

CATTLE It was a holiday In tho cattl
yard as usual on a Saturday, there being
nothing of any consequence received and
nothing of Importance on kal. Th re

showing a small decrease aa compared with
last week and with a year ago. i
Beef steer started out the week with a
good sharp advanc, price on Monday
being ' quoted lOdJISe higher. On Tueaday
there waa a Still further Improvement and
th market on that day waa quoted I6&
40o higher than th low time of th prevlou
week. Tueaday proved to be the high day
and for the next two daya the tendency ot
the market waa lower. Yesterday' mar
ket wa about ateady. Thua at the close
of thp week beef steers 'can safely b
quoted 1 Big 20c higher than the close of lost
week, the medium kind of beevea ahowlng
if-anything more - Improvement than the
heavy cattl. , ,
Cow and heifer experienced about the
am up and downs 8 beef steers, advanc

week, loalng part of the advanc later on.
but still closing ltVJKAo higher than last
week. Veal calve hav been good sellers
all week at strong prices, while bulls hav
ahown an advance ot 10l6a In many oases.
A Very fair volume of business was
transacted in atoekars and feeder. The
fset that beef steer sold V better advan
tage caused freer buying on tho part of
the country, but still Ihere wa ho very
great change In value. There wa, how
ever, a strong feeling for th better grade
of feeding cattle, and all uch met with
very ready aale.. At the cloae of th week
the yard are well clenned up and tho
market In a good healthy condition.
