LATEST UMBRELLA HANDLES
I'nlqoe Receptacles for Many Articles
Appreciated by Men and
Women,
From Paris come all the styles, those
that are fetching and those that are 'ultra
and outre. Clothes, hats and lingerie fash
ions, all come from the gay capital; skirts
that fit as tight as umbrella cases, and
hats that are feet In circumference.
For the woman of fashion to do without
her handbag, containing so many ot her
little individual comforts, for any length
of time would seem to be Impossible, yet
their growing slse has made them a posi
tive nuisance and a heavy weight to carry.
But what was to take their place? These
little articles so dear to every woman's
comfort, have to be carried, and they can
not bs carried loose In the hand. Who
would find a place to put these things?
The French Inventor, of course, and right
cleverly and gallantly he has don his
work.
First of all there Is a neat little knob
on her ladyship's umbrella handle, made
of gold, and smaller than a plngpong ball.
This la so small and pretty that it would
seem to have only one possible use for
the owner's hand to lean on. But upon Its
smooth surface there la a tiny lump; press
this and the knob opens. Within Is dis
closed some sort of a gambling game. It
may be roulette. It may be the "petits
chevaux," so dear to every Frenchwoman's
heart, or It may be a miniature Monte Carlo
roulette wheel. But whatever It Is, It
serves to amuse the woman while at her t
o'clock tea.
Another Innocent little umbrella handle
has within a complete pack of Ivory cards
with which Hhe can while away a tedious
hour In her motor car or on the train.
For those women who want to devote a
few moments to their tolettes, to beautify
themselves. In the sliver knobs of their
parasols are little sets. A gentle pressure
of the finger's tip on the lid opens it and
discloses her own face In the tiny mirror
In the upper half. Below It, In the perpen
dicular stick, there Is a powder puff, a
stick of rouge for her lips, some cosmetic
for her complexion, and the smallest vial
of perfume. Other parasol handles contain
the smallest bottles of whisky, eau-de-vie
and cordials.
The French saying that "the hours do
not' strike for happy ones," and the old
Anglo-Saxon one that "Time Is money,"
are the legitimate excuses for the device
ot the little watch, no bigger than a but
ton being ensconced In the flat-topped para
sol handle. Besides, It gives her an oppor
tunity to convince herself at all hours just
how late it Is.
But man must not laugh at woman's
vanity, for a glimpse at some of the other
cracks and crooks of walking cane han
dles show thst the sterner seg ar juat as
conceited about their looks aa are their
sisters. Instead of the big, ugly, knock-a-man-down
handles of a ysar ago, thoa of
today ar small, simple and delicate. One
contains a moustachs brush, a eomb, a
mirror; another a pair of manicure scissors
and a nail polisher. To prove, however,
that man thinks of business at all times
on of these: can receptacles har rolled
up in It a memorandum pad, a pencil,
fountain pen and a penknife.
There are philosophers, too, among these
artificers, and the on who arguea that all
ends In smoke has put out a golf stick
handle which ha snugly and compactly
tucked away in Its small spar cigarettes,
matches and some small change where
pickpockets cannot reach It.
Tha main economy about these new
canes, umbrsllas and parasol handles Is
that they ar practical as wall as pretty

EDUCATION AS A PBEVENTTTE
World-Wide Interest la Asttlig th

,
Within th last four months th church
of over 100 different cities In th United
States, all tha principal Yellfftou denomina
tions, and several InterdrnominAllonal so
cieties, have united In a campaign against
consumption, according to a statement Is
sued by the National Association for tha
Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis.
Notable campaigns have been conducted
by the allied churches of New Tork,
Rrooklyn, Pittsburg. Ft. Paut, Milwaukee.
Washington, Chicago, Providence, Balti
more, Trenton, Seattle, Philadelphia and
many other cities. In most of the place
a special Sunday has been set asld on
which sermons about tuberculoma have
been preached In th various churches. So
successful has been this method of de
claring the gospel of fresh air, that It I
being adopted by pastor all ovr th coun
try. In several of the larger rellglou de.
nomination definite resolutions by some
of the local ministerial organisations, ally
ing these association with the tuberculosis
movement, have been adopted.
Foremost In the fight against consump
tion is the Roman Catholic church. In this
church, under the direction of Archbishop
Ryan of Philadelphia, an educational cru
ssile against tuberculosis Is being carried
Into all of the parochial and other schools
In its control. As a result, over l.JfiO.OOO
school children In 13,000 parishes ar being
reached. The clergy of the church have been
asked also to Instruct their congregations
on the dangers and methods of preventing
tuberculosis, for the purpose of bringing
the simple doctrine of th our and pre
vention of this disease to every on of
the 17,000,000 Catholics In th t'nlted State.
The work of religious bodies In th waf
against tuberculosis received a great Im
petus In 1906, when Emanuel Church ot
Boston, under the leadership of Dr. Joseph
H. Pratt and Rev. El wood C. Worcester,
started a movement for the treatment' oi
tuberculosis patients in their homes undet
the supervision of the church. A th
patients held weekly meetings at the churcb
for instruction and advice from the physi
cians In Charge, the organisation wag called
a class. Bo successful was th Emanuel
class's first year's work that many othei
churches throughout the country hav fol
lowed this example, and tuberculosis dassei
have been formed In a large number of
cities. In many cases, independently of
church organisations. There are now about
fifty regular classes in existence, over one
half of which are conducted In connection
with churches.
The activity of the church, howevr, ai
a center of education in tuberculosis, is of
much more recent growth. In fact, almost
all of the preventive education work "of th
churches has been accomplished In th last
four months. The National Association for
the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis
estimates that there are now over .00C
church congregations to whom the message
of the prevention and cure of tuberouloel
has been preached, and the number Is In
creasing daily.
The religious campaign Is not only unde
nominational, but It Is also interdenomina
tional. The Toung Men's Christian associa
tion, for instance, has started an activ
crusadex against tuberculosis. Through H
physical department Instruction Is being
given concerning the nature and dangers
of consumption to all of th men and boy
who come under that branch of th asso
ciation. Educational lectures ar also be
ing held In many of the association, and.
In general, the campaign against tubercu
losis la being linked with the general cru
sade for a sound body and a sound mind.
The United Society of Christian Endeavor
has also taken an active Interest in th
tuberculosis propaganda. At the Interna
tional convention of that body, to be held
In Bt. Paul from July 7 to 12, on Of th
large tuberculosis exhibits of the National
Association for the Study and Prevention
of Tuberculocls. will be on display. An
active campaign of education will be car
ried on among the 10,000 delegates, who will
act aa missionaries In further spreading th
message. Th tuberculosis exhibit will be
shown by the side of missionary and other
social and civic exhibits.
This campaign among the churches and
religious organisations Is only a special in
stance of the widespread Interest In tuber
culosis, which has enlisted within the last
year the efforts of such organisation as
schools, labor unions, women's clubs, com
mercial Institutions, state legislatures, th
press, and almost all of th organised clvio
snd social societies. By all of these or
ganization one sermon is being; preached,
namely, that consumption I a communi
cable disease, that it can be prevented, and
that H can be cured by fresh air, rest and
wholesome food.
MAN LESS SHIP REACHES LAND

Almost wonderful to relste, th schooner
Cleopatra, which baa been sailing ths gulf
of Mexico without a guiding hand or a
sout aboard, has been found In an ap
parently uninjured condition, with all sail
sst
This ws the manner in which sh was
discovered by men who went out from
Pensacola to Bt. Oeorge's Island, whr th
vessel was sighted aground. Bh had evi
dently gone upon the beach easily, for sh
had suffered no Injury, except a llttl to
the hull, where she had pounded on th
and, and can easily be repaired.
On December 29 the vessel was caught in
a terrific storm on th gulf, which raged
so fiercely that the captain and crw war
washed from the deck. Th sails wer
et then, and they have remained so, th
vessel wandering about th gulf and turn
ing with th chang of th wind until sh
finally landed on the beach.
During this period the gulf was visited by

Discovers a Jw Astral Law f
Robert L. Hodge, a house painter, ef
Franklin Park, has invented an astral cal
culator, basd on what h claims as his
discovery of a new astral law, which h
believe will revolutionise th world
chronological system. According to hi
theories, the season change ar not eauaed
by the earth's revolution around tee sun,
but rather by a yearly revolution vt tha
sun in an orbit apart from th earth and
by a balance motion of th earth on lis
equatorial axis.
Hodg haa traveled across th country
taking observations to verify his theory.
Under this, a calendar year would consist
of exactly Sb4 dsys. with each fourth
month, beginning with March, consisting
of exactly thirty-one days, the other
eight months of thirty day a H ha
worked out a new astral calculation, t t
his observation. Boeioa Hre!d.
