A heavy tone prevailed In the whnat pit

aiapsd to extend operations over Sunday,
prevented the market becoming demoral

NEW YORK. March SO The lack Of
settled conviction on the speculative out
look by the professional element wss
shown by th alertness with which they
watched today for any sirn of outside
Initiative, or, Indeed, for any lead in the
operations In the market. Such signs
were sufficient to cause a quick and dl
rcl reversal In the market position, so
that when prices moved at all the fluctu
ations were confused and chsnajesble.
The result was to reduce the day' mar
ket practically to these tentative opera
tions of the professionals without de
icioplng any evidence of awakening In
terest from outside. There was oorao
stirring of speculation In Reading, but
It was aa confused and Inconclusive as
any other movement. New from th
steel trade was not calculated to attract
buyers for the shares of rompsnies in
that Industry. That the amount of busi
ness brought in by the lowering of prices
Is rrovlng Insufficient to keep open the
present wnrkln of the mill made a dls
couvsglng Impression.
The sustained strength of th forelrn
exchange market leads tankers to expect
the next week will see a further lars;e
outgo of gold, both to London and Argen
tina. An encasement of t2.ROrt.000 for
the former point was announced. It Is
Intimated that the sailing of an avail
able steamship Is all that Is wanted to
make a large gold shipment to Buenos
Ayres. Well-defined reports that the
forthcoming Mlanouri Pacific refunding
bond Issue would be of 1 160,000,000 or
Upwards of I par oent bonds had no ef
fect on the securities of that company.
The unresponsiveness of the money mar
ket to the K"ld exDort movement la ax-
plnlned by the showing of the banks, the
cash holdlncs of which are unaffected,
partly by reason of some apparent ro
deposlt of cash from the trust companies
to keep pace with their scaling down of
loans. Tho banks also reduced the loan
item during the week quite materially.

CATTLID There were no cattle here to
make a market this morning and, as usual
on a Saturday, there was nothing doing in
the cattle division. For the week receipts
have been very liberal, showing a large
gain over all recent weeks as well as over
the corresponding week of a year ago. As
a result of the heavy receipts and of very
unfavorabla eastern markets the trade
throughout the week has been generally un
satisfactory to the selling interests, it will
be remembered, that the finish at the close
of last week waa by no means good and
th downward tendency was continued over
Into tills week. Thus the market on Mon
day was lower and prices continued going
dnwn throughout the first half of the wees,
with the trade extremely slow every day.
Buyers acted on the bear side of the dial
all the way through. It being very evident
that the consuming demand for beef at
e-ustern polnta was not sufficiently heavy to
creule any great desire In the minds of
puckers for anything like liberal supplies
of cattle. As receipts became lighter the
market firmed up a little the latter part ot
the week, some of the decline being recov
ered. Thus at the close of the week the
market on beef steers is generally quoted
Uku.Sc lower than one week ago. As com
pared with the high point ten days ago the
market is off fully a half, dollar, except
possibly on the best grades of heavy beeves,
which have bten In moderate supply.
What ha been said above would apply
equally well to the market on cows and
heifers, which at the close of the week ar
aiso 16(8 26e lower than lust week In most
cases. Inferior eows and canners have been
unsatisfactory sellers throughout the week.
The lower and unsatisfactory beef trade
naturally has a depressing Influence upon
the trade in Blockers and feeders nnd tne
market on that kind of cattle has been dull
and weak, being at the close lii&lic lower
than last week.

HOGS Hogs sold very unevenly this
morning, and for that reason the market
ss a whole was unsatisfactory to every one
and It waa not easy to find any two peo
ple who could agree exactly as to the con
dition of th trade. Thua in one division
the market opened 6o higher and quite a
good many of the hrgs sold that way. In
another division the market was at no
time better than stecdy. Toward the close
the trade was very dull and the market
wound up weak at yesterday's prices, in
fact, a number of salesmen thought hcy
sold quite a little lower than yesterday.
It will be seen frrm this that salesmen
we: quoting the n arket anywhere from
higher to lower, as compared with yes
teiday. Receipts of hogs this week have shown
A falling off of close to 12.000 head, aa
compared with last week's very heavy run,
but still they have been larger than for
most rec;nt wtrkt. and right close up to
th record of a year ago. Th market
has fluctuated g good deal during th
week. Thus at th outset there was
Sharp decline, which was lo)iowd by a
till heavier advance on Turedjy. Wednes
day' market wis still higher, hog on that
day reaching th high point of th week.
During the next two days all th advance
ai d more too waa loet. Thus at th close
"I the werk tb market ia back not far
