DRIVE MADE AGAINST VALUES Prlres lrlft Stack to the Lowest la the Afternoon ew I Little Regarded fiends We Irregalar. NEW YORK. March 19,The to k mar ket became extremely apathetic today aa the realisation became atronger that the activity of the two previous day might be taken to show all the Interest stirred by the Introduction of the tariff bill In congress. Professional operators were disposed to close up outstanding con tract, owing to the small prospect of Hnv earlv activity tn the market. but showed little Inclination to enter on new commitment. A drive against the market wa helped by acute weakness of Interborough Metropolitsn slocks on account of re ports of new hid lots for the construction of subways under the ea-Htern portion of the city. Tho conjecture of powerful railroad backing for this new project have It force, although the rumor that the New York, New Haven ft Hartford Was em barked In the enterprise was without foundation. Tho local traction group waa affected more or less In sympathy. The Hill railroad and Chesapeake & Ohio were the principal features on the other side of the movement, the la-st rising to the highest price of It history. Price drifted back to the lowest in the neglect of the afternoon. New was little re garded, although a rise In copper uuota tlona at the New York Metal exchange and In the Ixindon market may have had some steadying Influence on Amalgajiia'.ed Copper. A similar effect on I'nlted States Steel wan due posnlnly to a statement credited to Charle M. Later on advices from Chicago indlcaled a weak and lower market and at that point packers began putting out a few bids, but they were In all cases as much ss 10c and In a good many cases more than that -lowsr as compared with yesterday. Owing to tha reluctance of salesmen to nuike any such concession the morning dragged by snd it was well along toward midday he fore any business of consequence had been transacted. In spite of all that salesmen could do buyers remained firm In their determina tion to break the market and salesmen began cutting loose pretty freely when ever they could get within 10c of yester day's prices. On a good many hogs, how ever, the packers were bidding fully 15c lower and the trado continued dull, but still about everything was sold before the close. SHEEP Receipts of sheep were small this morning, only about fourteen cars be ing reported In. which means that there were not enough to create very niurh In terest among huyers or make very much of a market. Still, there seemed to ba a good demand and the few loads here sold at prices that looked about like yester day. Practically everything was cleaned up by 9 o'clork In the morning. The same Mexican lambs which brought 17.36 yester day sold at S7.40 today, with westerns at 17.28. There were ewes here good enough to bring 15.38. Tha decline yesterday wiped out prac tically all the advance or the week on lambs, leaving the market only about where It was at the close of last week. Sheep, however, have retained some of the advance, being around 10c higher than last week. All this means that the market throughout the week has been In satis factory condition so far as selling Interests were concerned.
