vice president of the I'nited States.
Charles Adams Is a resident of North

the Jumel estate, , when Betsey Bowen
was left a widow with the vast fortune
of the wealthy French merchant.
The story, an related by the Omaha n,
rivals the romances of fiction, and tha
story Is told minutely, as Brookfleld wa

widow married Captain Jonathan Clark, (
who served In the revolution. Ho was a
shoemaker by trade, poor and somewhat .
dissipated. They resided In Frovldenca

whole family occupied in common, with
a single chimney on one aide; with two
doors, leading respectively to the rond

door, opening upon a road now discon

and work at his trade. His wife worked

"The family did not go to meeting; nor
the girls to school, nor did the girls visit
their neighbors and some incidents related

In September, 1797, the last month, proba
bly, of his residence in Rutland, all except
one given for $1 In full of all demands,
which Indicated that ha spent that month
In settling up with his neighbors.' It Is not
Impossible that their departure was made
In anticipation of a 'warning from the
town authorities. Some time that autumn
(1797) Cl.irk and his family removed to
North Carolina, where both parents died
during an epidemic In 1798. Tha two girls
managed In some way to get to Washing
ton and afterwards to New Tork, where
Betsey, who possesaod great beauty and
an attractive manner, captivated the very
wealthy French merchant, Stephen Jumel,
and became his wife. The date of their
marriage cannot be. accuratoly determined,
but was about 1804 to 1808. Thus the lowly
born, uneducated Betsey Bowen rose from
her obscurity and poverty and became the
wife of one pf the merchant princes of
New York, the possessor of wealth and
everything that wealth could command.
Leaves Wife Lara; Kstata,
"They lived togetlier until 1832. when
Jumel died, having settled upon his wife
a very large estate, and she was designated
as 'Madam Jumel.'
"But she was destined to fill a much
higher and more distinguished social posi
tion. I.te In the same year, 1832, she was
married to Aaron Burr, who had been vice
president of the United States from 1S01 to
1806, the first term of President Jefferson's
administration.
"This was an Ill-advised, unhappy and
brief union. He was then 70 and site about
65. They separated In 1833 and sha. com
menced a suit for divorce that year or the
next.
"The data of the decree of divorce Is nrt
found on tho records of New York, and It
is not impossible that none was obtained,
but by decree or without one they were
separated and she took the name of her
first husband and was ever afterwards
known as 'Madam Jumel.'
"Having unlimited means at her disposal
she spent much of her time In France, re
siding alternately In the French capital
und in our own commercial metropolis.
She was for many years well known at Sar
atoga Springs and Niagara Falls by most
of tha fashionable visitors at these fashion
able places and occasionally, spent a winter
In New Orleans. The estate settled on her
by her first husband consisted largely In
real estate In New York City on Broadway,
Seventh avenue and other streets, and a
large tr:tct itt land on Washington Heights,
including tha historic, mansion of the Eng

"Afior her death her will was admitted to
probate, giving the bulk of her estate to
the Episcopal church and Its rector at
W ashington Heights, and to various char

bers of her family, consisting of a nephew
and niece, children of a daughter of her
sister, Polly, whom she had adopted, and
their father. Nelson Chase, esq., a sawyer
of New York City, all of whom resided
with her, and had reasonably expected to
succeed to her estate, were given but little.
"The late celebrated Charles O'Connor
was retained on their behalf and ha
brought suit to annul the will. It was In
the course of his preparation for the trial
ef this case which engrossed all his treat
learning', and which lie Intended to make
the crowning effort of his professional ca
reer, that the early history of 'Madam
Jumel' was hunted up and the clouds of
romance which had surrounded It weia
dissipated "
