CHICAGO. March It. Wheat prices ad

Half of the day's gain In wheat prices

close of the previous session. May
opened at 31-16H ta ll.Hfe and Jul at
tl.OIH to $1.0414. Demand was general
at the start owing to an advance of td
to lSd at Liverpool, which was largely
due to a decrease of nearly 2,000.000
bushels In the Argentina visibly supply
and to smaller exports for the week from
that country than bad been predicted.
Bull leaders gave the market active sup
port during the greater part of the day
and thla led to free covering by shorts In
general. Reports of damage to the
French crop, claims that the Balkan situa
tion Is again becoming acute and re
port alleging enormous export sales from
this country were factors that further
strengthened the market lata In the ses
sion. Rumors were current In the pit
that the export business today at New
York would aggregate more than loo
boatloads, but a message from a reliable
house there declared that It would ,i,.
exceed thirty boatloads. Sentiment lu tne

NEW YORK. March II. The rather
almie drift of prices of stocks turned
upwards todsy after an uncertain period
of backing and filling. Dealings ex
panded also slightly over yesterday's low
level for the year. The meager specula
tion centered In Reading and wss based
apparently on the labor outlook.
Th rejection by the miners' represen
tatives of the counter proposition of the
anthracite operator is accepted with pro
fessed equanimity by holders of Reading
stock. The prospect of a shutdown cf
mining operations seems to he regarded
not unfavorably as giving opportunity to
dlxpoae of an accumulated surplus of
coal and to reduce the interest ohargea
for carrying this surplus. This la an ar
gument advanced by buyers of the stock.
There Is an undercurrent of belief tnat
there wilt be no strike and this alan la a
factor In modifying the Influence of the
news from the conference. Some of the
buying of Reading was supposed to come
from uncovered spots. The movement in
the general list wss little more than one
of sympathy with that In Reading. There
is some ft-sr that the tariff bill, when It
comes from the committee next week,
may contain some surprises that will
prove disagreeable to those Interested In
some of the Industrie affected. The broad
Intimation of a probable abolition of the
duty on Iron ore weakened the certifi
cate of participation in the Iron and ore
properties of the Great Northern railway
today.
Estimates of the week's currency
movement were followed by languid Inter
est In view of the continued pressure of
funda for lending. The price of copper
was marked down again at the New
York Metal exchange and receded also
In the London market. The foreign mar
kets reported dull trading as well a
here, but some sensitiveness to rumors
regarding the Balkan situation Is manl
feted. The rebound In Erie on the de
nial of yesterday rumors of a receiver
ship was followed by moderate trength
of stocks.
