NEW YORK. March 11. The perplexitlea
of the room traders were added to by the
want of responsiveness In the slock market
today to any news developments. S.ich a
dullness Is rsxely witnessed on the New
York Stock exchange. It was supposed that
the ending of the government's suits aga nat
the Standard Oil company would revive
some animation in the market. Reasoning
from the extreme pertubatton of speculative
sentiment which followed the Infliction of
the 29.000,000 fine on this company the
professions! market operators expected
some Inflow of buying orders to follow the
acqultal of the company. They bought a
few stocks late yesterday expecting to sell
at higher prices to buyers who might be
attracted today by the Stanard Oil decis
ion. There was no siich demand, the real
ising sales consequently forced prices down
wsrds. Acute weakness developed In the
Brie Issues, accompanied by rumors of a
coming receivership.
Th news from Washington, pointing to
the future of the tariff revlalon was of
more effect In clogging the activity of the
market than events nearer at ham!.' The
assembling of the conference over snthra
cite mining wages presented another Issue
of which the solution Is awaited. A few
Slocks moved under the Impulse of special
cause; sugar Industrials on the report
that import duties would be untouched;
tobacoo because of the record earnings re
ported for last year, and so on In a few
other cases. Arrangements were reported
for the export to lxindon of St.oou.uoo In
eaglea on Saturday notwithstanding the
easier tone of Iondnn discounts. The de
mand for money In the local marks today
was called practically dead, the only sign
of demand being for funds for a year at
t"4 per cent.

buyers yeattetday was strongly In evlden s
sgnin this morning Cnder the double it.
fliienoe of large receipts and lower mat
kcts at mmt other selling point" buyets
were enabled to force a atlil further de
cline this morning. The general marl.et
ronld be quoted loajlle lower than yester
day. It will be remembered hewexer. that
1'iere was conalderable variation In tl.e
market yesterdsy. depending upon the t'n t
of dsy, so that If a comparison was made
with yesterday's close, for example, it
wo'tld not show as much decline as If com.
pared with salea made earlier In in day.
The movement todav was rather uneven,
the market being quite active In one di
vision of the ysrds. so that prvtty much
everything In sight sold In gool season,
while 1n some other rrts of the yard It
waa more or less or a drag an me tore
noon. Later trains carne In heavily loaded, until
there was a total of IM cars on ssle, msk
Ing It the largest run since Jsnusry of Iset
veer, when 27 rsrs were received on one
day. With such sn unusvislly hesvy run,
it wss not surprising thst the msrket con
tinued lottfloe lower, closing slow and weak
at the low point of the day.
A feature of the market at the present
time la the tendency of heavy and good
light weights to sell closer tog-ether then
was the case a abort time ago. The apread
between the. ten appears to be gradually
closing up. aa will be noted from the sales.

CATTLK Receipts of cattle this morning
were very liberal, 1(55 cara being reported
in, which was a largo run for a Thursday.
The market as a whole was In fair condi
tion and opened without any very new fea
tures being displayed. In fact the early
market was generally quoted as just about
steady by both buyers and sellers. The
trade wss not very active, but still there
was a fair demand so that a good share of
the cattle sold in reasonable Reason.
Itopreseutatives of packing houses were
out In the yards in fair season looking for
beef steers, but, as a seller remarked, they
did not look very hard "to begin with, ' the
trade on the oirfning being rather slow,
later on It livened up and the more de
airable of the klllurs changed hands before
midday.
Cows and heifers followed very closely
after beef steers, at first the trade being
rather dull, but picking up :ind the most
nf the receipts changing hands some ltlllti
time before midday.
The stockers and feeder situation wag not
much changed today. The storm earlier In
the week naturally reduced 4xuntry de
mand somewhat, but still, with the outlook
for beef cattlo somewhat more encouraging,
there has been considerable buying. As
supplies have been only moderate the mar
ket has remained In a healthy- condition.

SHEFJP necelpt of sheep this morning
were very liberal, but one or two trslns
were late In arriving, so tint when the
market opened the number on sale was
by no meana excessive. The Arrlvsls con
sisted very largely of lambs, with a fslr
sprinkling of sheep. The quality wss about
the same ns It has been during the last few
days, that la. there was a considerable
showing of pretty decent killers, with more
or less trash sandwiched In.
The life and snap eharscierlMIe of the
sheep market at tlilf point was prettv
generally wanting this morning. Buyers'
advices lrom eastern mutton markets were
most discouraging, both demand and prict s
at the large consuming centers having ex
perienced a sharp drop. At the same time
buyers were recelvli g reports from their
bouses st other market points predicting
lower prices for the dsy. With news of
this character In band It Is hartllv neces
sary to add that buyers acre very back
ward about taklbg hold and were In no
hurry whatever to fill orders. The result
was a slow and dragging market through
out. Still buyers kept picking up the of
ferings, at least the more desirable loads,
for which they paid prices anywhere from
almost steady to 10c lower. Thus lambs
that brought 17.40 yesterday, sold today for
17.30. and yearling at IS 5 vesterrtay
brought 16.76. with yesterday $b,60 weth
ers at 18.40 today. As a matter of course
there may have been some difference In
the quality of the two days' shipments,
but, nevertheless, it Is very plain that the
market wss lower, i.'ood ewes sold up as
high as 16. So.
