FOX IN CHARGE OF CORMIUSKF.RS
Bnay Now Developing a Pitching
Stall.
LINCOLN, Neb., March 10. (Special.)
Captain "Billy " Fox of the Lincoln west
m irAiriin team took charae of the Unl
verslty of Nebraska base ball squad this
afternoon aa coach and put the candi
dates for the 'varalty through a drill of
three hours In the "cage" of tha gymna
sium. He spent a considerable share of
the practice period In looking over in
pitching material and in giving three or
four of th most promising slab candi
dates Instructions for twirling. 1
Coach Fox was well pleased with th
size of the squad and with the prospect
for a strong nine. He said the situation
this spring looks a great deal better than
It did last season when he assumed Con
trol of tha coaching of the candidates.
He ventured to assert after practice to
day that, providing that the pitching
problem can be solved, the Cornhusksrs
will have one of the fastest college base
ball teams In the valley.
Two features of practice thla spring,
Coach Fox explained to Captain Beltxer,
will receive great attention from him.
These are the developing of a staff of
tw triers and the drilling of the candi
dates In batting. Theae points are about
the only ones at which the Cornhuekera
are real weak thla aprlng, and Coach Kox
believes he can strengthen them a great
deal with four or five weeks of steady
training.
If the weather becomes favorable for
outdoor practice this week the candidates
will be taken to Antelope park, where
they will train thla season. Arrange
ments have been made with Manager
Grean for tha use of the park for prac
tice and for playing the intercollegiate
contents on the Nebraska home schedule
The Cornhusker home dates have been
placed so that they will not conflict with
any of the league bookings.
Captain McDonald and Coach Dr. Clapp
ar preparing to issue a call for truck
candidates trie latter part of the wek.
The cold weather of the last two days
caused the announcement to be delayed
until the base ball men can work out
I of doors and leave the gymnasium for
tne use or tne cinaer-Dam canaiaaies.
For the first few days after th track 1
and field men report for training they
will be kept In the armory, receiving spe
cial Inatructtona from Coach Clapp for
an hour or two each day. They will b
sent out doors about -the middle of the
present month.
