NEW TORK. Feb. 24. Tftera rams sr
hetk today to tha disorderly liquidation
which waa rushing tha market mto a atal
of demoralisation. The perception that the
course af yesterday If continued would Jeat
to tna reeuit prompted some measure or
e'feotiv support today. The large short
merest which has grown rapidly with the
iwlft fall In prices for a week past wrrc
prompted to reduca their short lira wltn
tha ajgna of a greater stability In the mar
ket. This demand waa a potent Influence
in tha recovery of price. The recovery wa
eome tlm In atiaphig itself definitely and
'xninned occasional heeltattor.a and uncer
aintlea. which seemed to indicate a lack of
irons convlrtlon on the Part of the buvers.
The liquidation obviously had spent much
of Its force. Tfie buying demand, however,
was languid. After parioda of dullness
caused by Its mutual Indifferences bv the
buyers and sellera. tha trader tested the
market by advancing- bids. This process
was repeated many times with apparent
iscouragement when the increased volume
t selllns on the advance were nercetved.
Each time, however, that rrtces were al
lowed to allp back the activity diminish-!.
Tha undertone of th market therefore was
firm, although lacking1 aggressive ' strength.
This was after an early period of great
onnnii a nen it seemed an unsettled que
mn whether the downward tljns of yes
terday should be continued or a violent
rebound substituted. London apparently
waa aa confused over the outlook aa our
wn market and a sharn relsnse from a
former advance there, coming Just befor
th New York market opened, had much to
do with the flurtuattona of the afternoon
market. Th recovery owed much to a
ober view of nm of the considerations
wriicn figured in the weakness of yesterday.
Rf ports yesterday tht the supreme coutt
had decided a!nt th anthracite roads In
ha commodities clause cases were dis
proved todsy. This accounted for the lead
ership assumed by Reading in the recovery.
i nera waa a Detter feeling also over th
steel trade outiook and a growth of con
fidence that the price concessions on steal
products were preliminary to revival in
th trade. Th process of speculative de
flation called for by the trade readjust
ment granr on was recognised to have
made great progress In the abrupt colrapae
in prices wmcn naa aireauy occurred. The
proportiona of the market readjustment
mus called tor obtained clearer form and
were corrected from tha extravaarant as
sumptions of yesterday that an Immediate
reiapaa to tha acuta conditions of depres
sion and contraction of Vfi was in proa
pact, Tha conviction find very general
erpreaaion In the financial district that
fundamental conditiona are aound and are
ehaped toward betterment rather than to
ward recession. While the slock market had
r us bed to a prematura reflection of entire
restoration of prosperity and had been ar
tlflcaUy stimulated to that end the reaction
toward lower price called for by then con
ditions evidently did not call for an im
mediate arop back Into the depths from
which tha raeovery had started. Such
reasoning must be taken to explain th ac
tion of th stock market today. With the
reassuring tendency once rtnally shaped,
requirements of th large uncovered bear
Interest must be looked to for explanation
of th extent ta which th rally ran. The
maraot waa unarrested by the large opera
tion of tha day. Tha call for return, of
SJv.ut).0 of government deposits to th
treasury matured today and the New Tork
banks turned over many millions of this
amount yesterday and today on account of
interior correspondents. Over tl.00tf.te0 in
gold was ens-aged for shipment to Argentina-
Last prices were dearer than yester
day to th extent of $5 a ahare for Reading.

Landaa Stack Market.
LONDON. Feb. St. The slump on liie
New York Stock exchange occasioned by
the steel rate war and the adverse supreme
court decision in the New York Central
railway rebating case was received on the
Stock exchange early today-. The values of
American rails wer marked down from
1 to i point, but It soon became evident
that the market considered th decline
overdone and covering operation from New
Tork. th continent and local sources
caused a smart recovery. Steel at noon
stood m points over the New Tork equiv
alent at 4S9-1A after opening at 4iV Bal
timore at Ohio jumped 2 point to K77H:
Amalgamated advanced H to 70V. while the
low-priced shares attracted attention at
price vry1ng from H to a point over
parity. Tti entire tone of th market at
11:20 ia quite frood. after considerable bus
iness. Foreign politics still hang over the
gilt edge and foreign section, but there Is
no pronounced weakness. Consols arc s
lower than yesterday.

viewed from a seller's standDOinL
Buyer of beef cattle wer out In th

day While there wss nothing choice to
make a ton. there were a lew catue ncr

brirur Bo.
Cows snd heifers were in equally good de
mand and they, too, sold early in tha morn-
Ir.c and lottluc rusher.
Tha feeling in stockers and feeders was a
little better. Th anarp decline that ha
taken place in prices Ujring tne laat lew
days stimulated the dementi to quit an
extent and tha stale cattle in the yard ye
teraay were pretty well cleaned up. Thu

SHEEP Receipts of sheep this morning
were very light, only about ten cars being
reported In. Of tnk number four cars
were not fat enough tor killers. Thus il
happened that there was not enough of any
on thing on sal to leally make A market
or to test value thoroughly.
Packers aa aeemed to want a few good
killers, and. a there wer only four car
to be divided among them, they boiiKht
what there waa at pricea that generally-
looked a little stronger than yesterday.
Thus pietty, good lambs sold up to S7.,
with vearlinrs at Sa.10. and old wethers at
Sa.iyJ. AH these price were very satisfac
tory to tha selling interests.
There were four cars of yearling which
sold to a feeder buyer at SS.S. A good, turn
price, as compared with recent days.
All In all the market was In a rood.
healthy condition, and tha light run waa
plainly due to the inclement weather which
lnterferred with shipping opera-ions.
