rapid growth today and brought the fabilc
of vaiuea down with cosh. Th con
viction waa quick In coming alter the
throwing open of th steel market to
competition laat week that the stock mar
ket position wss sn artificial one and had
bn brouaht about by false aasumpllons
of tha trade position. Thla waa not wholly
a new view of the market, but the success
which the aggressive support of vslurs had
met had built up a confidence that the
position would be held by the main
strength of the powerful capitalists sup
posed: to be hsck of the movement. Tod.iy
saw th quick abandonment of so much
of that Confidence aa waa left after tho
week-end demonstrations of weakness Isst
week.
Various factor combined to aooentuate
tha weakness toil.iv snd It gained cumula
tive force. The serious view takon by the
Ijondor market of our disturbances as
shown by the heevy declines effected
there yesterday during the New York
holiday paved th way for a renewal of
tha downward course. The foreign mar
kets were also unsettled by the revival of
fears of an outbreak In the Balkans due to
Servla'a attitude towards Austria. I,ondon
sent heavy order to tha New York market
as soon as trading began and this helped
the downward rush of prices, which began
after the opening. Ther wa consldersbl
accumulation of orders from domestic
sources also, some of them for liquidation
on account of ttad outlook, others forced
by failure to make good margins which had
been exhaueted by last week's fall in
prices. Tha weak early market, which re
sulted from these conditions was no more
than had been expected and tha alert pro
fessional element amongst the traders
stood ready to take advantage of the de
cline to take storks, came to cover short
contracts put out last week and some for
an upward reaction In view of the con
alderabl extent to which the decline had
run. Thla buying steadied the) market
momentarily, but It proved a technically
weakening factor when the decline wss re
newed and these purchasers were pressed
for liquidation along with the continued
outside selling. A new set of weakening
factors came In the Inferences drawn from
the reconvening of th sunreme court at
Washington. Decisions were hnndad down
against tha New York Central for rebating
and th speculative element for reasons
which a lawyer might not follow, tumped
to th conclusion that a later decision
would uphold the constitutionality of the
commodities clause of th Hepburn law and
so oonstrsln the anthracite railroads to
get rid of their mining properties.
Another weak group of atocks was found
In the mining railroads which have been
exploited fhr rapid advances on assump
tion of mergers or benefits to accrue from
their purchase by larger aystems. Of th
teel trade position the speculative contingent-was
disposed to take the gloomiest
view, rushing to the opposite extreme of
tha unbounded confidence .rcvlottsly held
of the ability of tne (.-cntrtltterj forces In
tha trad to maintain the position until de
mand revived.
Today's discussion In th neighborhood
of the Stock exchange all nad to do with
th likelihood of railroad cuta In the steel
achedulea of duties In tha new tariff bills,
the fear that trad revival would halt until
theae tariff ratea wer decided, the neces
sity that would follow for a reduction of
wage and th danger that would then
aria of strikes and disorders. The actual
news from the steel trade waa vtigue, the
rumor were confuslrrg and unreliable and
th unsettling effect In conscience was
great, but the expression of these senti
ments Invariably Issued In the selling of
storks, the result waa simplified Into un
deviating liquidation. There was only a

the day's profits, hut the last break of the

active appearance, nevertheless the offer

CATTLE RrcciDts looked quite formid
able on paper this morning, 1U2 cars being
reported In. The quality of the receipts,
however, was not very good, a cons'.derable
proportion of the arrivals being made up of
Blockers and feeders, with trashy stuff pre
dominating. The market on killing cattle
waa in very satisfactory condition from
start to finish.
The sniall supply of beef steers, together
with a fair buying demand, gave prices a
turn for the better, so that the general mar
ket could safely be quoted 10c higher than
yesterday, with the trade fairly active , at
the advance. In spite of the fact that the
rattle looked very bad, having come from
feed yards s liumlnjr with mud, pretty
much everything changed handa In good
season. !
Cows and heifers were also In good ue-
niaml and they, too, sold very freely al :
in tees that were as much as 10c higher than i
yesterday. Desirable (al cows and hellers
were in very moderato supply.
There were a good many stock cattle and
feeders in the yards, snd it was unfortunste
thai such was Hie case, as the demand 'as
very light. With fat cattle selling none too
well during the last week for ten days and
with feed yards In a terrible condition, the
demand for feeders from the country whs
extremely light. Thus the trade was not
only slow, but prices were still lower even
than yesterday, being at least weak to loc
lower.

HOGS Hogs this morning were strong
to 5c higher than yesterday s general mar
ket. Prices were somewhat uneven, de
pending upon the quality of the hogs, and
there were cases where ssleamen did not
think they got nut any better than yester
day, while, on the other hand, there weie
plenty of sales that looked fully 6c higher.
A gjod many of the early sales ranged
from fo.90 up to M 15. with the better grades
of heavy hogs on up to 16.25. Light hogs,
especially those on the common order, were
discriminated against, that la. the demand
for that kind waa limited to only a few
buyers, and they were not at all anxious
for the Inferior loads. Thus It happened
that hogs of thst kind were the last to
sell. It ia no easy matter to say whether
these common light hogs were much
higher or not. owing to the unevrnness of
the trade on that kind from day to day.

played marked weakness at the opening
today. The brunt of the attack was1 borne
by the I'nited States Steel issues and
other metal stocks. Tnited Btites Sttel
common sold off 1T on heavy trading at the

Steel preferred also was heavily
In and sold off almost 2 points
initial trading. There also were
heavy losses In Republic Iron and Steel
