FAREWELL SPEECH PROPHETIC
Jnat Forlr-Elsbt Tears Ago Lincoln
Told sprlagdeld Uoodby, Qnes
Honing His Fate,
Just forty-eight years ago Thursday
February II. Iftil Abraham Lincoln bade
goodbye to his friends and neighbors at
Springfield, 111., and took the train for
Washington to become president of the
United States. It was ths day before his
62d birthday anniversary. The little
speech he made to his assembled neigh
bors on that occasion thoroughly betrays
his feeling of uncertainty, It not appre
hension as to his fate, though this feeling
cannot be construed into one of fear, for
his indifference to his safety at all times
was a constant source of annoyance to
hla friends and assrriates In the adminis
tration. That Lincoln deeply felt the gravity of
hia mission is denoted as clearly In this
speech as In anything else he ever said
or did. He even thought his wss a more
serious task than that aet before Wash
ington. Hero is what Lincoln sshl to his friends
is he was leaving Springfield, hla old
horns, to which he never returned alive:
My Friends: No one, not in my sltustlon,
csn appreciate my feeling of audness at
this parting. To this place and the kind
ness of this people I owe everything
Here I have lived a quarter of a century
and have passed from a young to an old
man. Here my children have been horn
and one is buried. 1 now leave, nn knowing
when or whether ever I may return, with
a task before me greater than that willed
rested upon Washington. . Without the aa
slatance of that Divine Being who ever
attended him I cannot succeed. With that
assistance I cannot fall. Trusting In Him
who can go with me and remain with you
and be everywhere for good, let ua con
fidently hope that ail will yet be well. To
Hia care commending you, aa I hope In
your prayera you will commend me, I bid
you an affectionate farewell.
