NEW YORK. Feb. ll.-The, dull strength
In today'a market waa ascribed In large
part to foreign Influence and was an echo
of the route undergone by the bear ele
ment In the speculation on the Iondon
stock market. The situation abroad has
been cleared up materially by the Interna
tional political adjustments which have
been going on and which remove a weight
of apprehension that has borne on the fi
nancial markets for many months past.
The easing of the London money market
also gives a fresh start to the Investment
demand. Which has begun Io show signs
of being glutted by the large new Issues of
capital recently placed in the market. The
closing up of short accounts made a buoy
ant stock market In Iondon yesterday and
today, the rebound In British consols reach
ing to more than a full point In that time,
although some reaction occurred before to
day's, markets closed. . . ...
Ixmdon was a buyer- of stocks here on a
considerable scale and there was an Impor

Some part of (he buying here , was sup
Dosed to be prompted by the action of
the California legislature In. reconsidering
the bill to segregate Japanese children In
the public schools, although the discussion
of our Japanese relations has lost Its In
fluence aa a stock market factor for sev
eral days. Union Pacific moved upward
with its usual strong sympathetic effect on
the whole list. The admission of directors
representing the new control to the Ches
apeake a Ohio board was made the occa
sion for another demonstration of strength
In that stock. The whole of the southern
group of railroad stocks wns marked up
briskly without special explanation. Esti
mates of the currency movement were for
only part of the week, but thev indicated
some loss of cash by the banks, aa the
withdrawal of deposits by the United States
treasury and the shipment of gold to South
America were not ofset by the inflow of
cash from the Interior. The monev market
was not peroeptlbly affected by thla show
ing. January exports of domestic produce
fell 840.Ono.onO in value below the January
reports of . last year., hut that month last
year marked an absolute record in mer
chandise exports and was the culmination
of the rush to market merchandise abroad
for the purpose of procuring gold to re
lieve the after-panic money conditions In
New York. The atock market sank back
Into lethargy In the late dealings and the
day's change proved trivial In most cases.

CATTLE Receipt of cattle were not
very large, only 120 cars-being reported in.
Still that waa a fair run for this late In
the week.
While there was ' considerable Inquiry
after beet cattle buyers all aeemed to feel
that they have been paying too high price,
the rnarket having been forced upward by
th light receipts following the heavy
storm. In coasetruence of this feeling the
trade Was more or less of a drag all the
morning, ; "while price generally looked
about 10c lower than Tueaday. There were
a few good steer that sold aa high a $6.10.
The market on beef steers did not Improve
any, but on the contrary ruled atill weaker,
becoming fully' IOQIBo lower and closing
weak oven at -trie decline.
Cows and heifers, were In very good de
mand, the same aa they have been all the
week and tte market on thai class of catUe
did not scow mvK-h change aa compared
with Tuesday;. WnsV nH: ally figured as
fully steady. - t ......
Stockers and feeder did not show very
much change. The fact Is th trad on that
kind of cattle has been In pretty good con
dition all the week considering the adverae
weather conditions. There were only a
few her today, butthey generally sold in
good' season.'. . . . - ,

HOOS 'Hog opened this morning 20c
higher than Tuesday and th trad wa
fairly active at the advance, about two
thirds of the receipts, that la about fifty
cars, selling In a comparatively short time.
A considerable proportion of the early sale
brought price ranging from 86.30 up to
36.40, the latter being the high price of the
day, against a top on Tueaday of 86.40.
While both packer and shlppurs were buy
ing, all the packer ware not lepreaenled,
ome of -them holding buck and refuaing
to follow th advance. A the more urgent
order were filled and buyer dropped out,
the market completely collapsed, all the
advance being lost. In fact, buyer gen
erally began claiming that they would not
pay any more than last Tuesday, even If
they had to go without th hoi a. and their
bid in mm case did not look aa good
aa Tuesday, .to . sellers. - .Sellers were
naturally refuaing to -make auch a con
cession, and for a time tbere wa abso
lutely nothing doing on th market.
