Feb. 10 The speculative spirit see ma to be In a torpor at present nd no operations aee undertaken in th stork market of any far-reach Ing sig nificance or importance. The dealings of professional leaders which make up th market are of a kind which are dosed up from one day to another and often In the ssme day. a profit of a small frac tion berng aufflclent to Induce realisa tion. Such a market amply explains the fitful and languid fluctuation which ex tend orer little greater range In the coura of a week than for a slnal day. Today' market w almost barren of Incident -and Ita subsidence Into greater dullness sugs-esta an early arrival at com plete stagnation, a condition,., however, which I rarely prolonged for any length f time except In periods of profound financial and commercial depression. An Immediate factor Increasing the dull ten dency was the approaching double holi day. Dull as waa the market, ita action did Jiot express an uncheerful view of the outlook, the, resistance to the early de clining tendency and the later sluggish upward movement suggesting a tenacious hold on securities by present owners. In spite of the entire dinTncllnation to take on new hold in us. Foreign Influences were of considerable sentimental effect on the tone, but without giving rise to any act ual operations of Importance In the mar ket. Securities snd money markets abroad were favorably affected by the de velopments concerning International rela tion. The visit of th British sovereigns to Berlin Is counted on to soften seme Of the asperities that have grown up In the feelina: between the two nations. Re lief wa felt over the action of Bulgaria In the Issuance of the demobilisation or der, confirming the appearance of re atored concord growing out of the set tlement with Turkey. The agreement be tween France and Oermany over Moroc can affairs waa another source of satis faction. Finally, the further rise In mar ket quotations of Japanese bonds soothed any apprehensions that might have been caused by more bellicose signs in the Japanese relations with this country. The force of these considerations snd of the relaxing money market in London Waa measured In the material advance of 11-14 of a point in the price of British ronsol. The direction In which these develop ment have mot Interest to the New York market Is In the relief afforded from the Insistent liquidation of foreign holdings of American securities, which ha been going on for many months. The relatively high level of the stork price In New Tork, the low money rstes In comparison with foreign money market and the continued advantage In the in ternational exchanges held by this coun try as a result of the heavy excess of value of merchandise exports over im ports have all combined to prompt for eigners to send home our securities s a means to procure' relief for their own necessities. Much Of this has been gen uine investment liquidation, and anything which promises its abatement will go to remove a serious weight on the appre ciation of values, wlilch would be looked for without It. The few point of special strength In today's market had little to explain them. The rise In the Colorado railroad group was In spite of reports of unprecedented snow , blocksdes In that region. A rise In the London prie of copper was made of some Influence on the copper Indus trial The appearance of E. H. Harrl man at a New York Central directors' meeting gave encouragement to hope of hi good physical condition. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value 1 6J SO. 000. For fear of blockades the different railroad companies refused to receive stock yester day, which accounts for the fact of there being nothing here today. There were a few cars on Bala that arrived too late to be sold yesterday. These cattle met with very ready sale, buyers for all purposes being anxious for supplies. Besides taking the cattle readily, they paid prices that generally looked about loc higher than yesterday. In fact, lt was a good, healthy market, what there was of It, and entirely satisfactory. The only trouble was that there were not more cattle to sell.
