The trade was looking for a light run, but this was too much of a good thing, and as there was hardly enough to make a single day's killing for any packer, the demand was not as broad as it might nave neen otherwise. The few decent beef steers offered founa a ready sale at prices that were all of 10c higher than yesterday and everything changed hands at an early hour in tho forenoon. The advance of yesterday and today brings the msrket back to about where It was at the close of last week, or 10 lie higher than th extreme low nuint lant week. With only four or five cars of cows and heifers on sale this morning and with a fair Inquiry from both local packers and outside buyers the trade waa active and prices all of 10n:'16a higher than yesterday. As compared with the close ot last week values ai lGg16o higher and there Is a good undertone to the trade, although, as with fat cattle, the advance has been due more to the meager supply thsn to any improvement In the demand. Stockers and feeders were very scare this morning and the trade waa very quiet. Prices were steady to a shade lower all round and are anywhere from lOo to 3Gc lower than at the close or last week. HOGS The run of hogs waa also light this morning, but th quality was very fair. As wss the case yesterday, packers were out In the yards early In the morning and with good comneitltlon from shippers and speculators, the trade ruled active. with prices generally 10c higher than yes terday for all grades. The top sold up to 36.36 as against the same price yesterday, but ths bulk of the trading today was sround t6.0O!!.25, as atrainnt a bulk yester day of 85.904f6.10. BH EBP Receipts of sheep were very light this morning, only rive cars netng re ported In, and of this number four load were not offered for sale. The few sheep and lambs here sold quickly at good, strong prices, but the general market could hardly be quoted more than stesdy. Prices show a decline of 15S2Tc as compared with last week, the principal cause of the decline be ing the unsettled weatner. witn colder wenther the demand will be broader, and tn fact, the tone to th market ia generally a shade beteer at the close of the week. The demand for feeder sheep snd lsmbs has been very fair, although the volume of business has been limited. Prices have shown very little change from day to day snd what few feeders have changed hands this week have brought steady prices. WHOLESALE LINES RESTRICTED tTondHlona la Iroa aad Steel Coallaa Dlsaapotatlng, Som Mill 0er allna Oaly to Sixty Per feat of Capacity. NEW YORK, Feb. R. O. Dun ft Co.'i Weekly Review of Trad tomorrow will say : Dullness of retail trade Is somewhat mora Sronounced than usual st this sason and istrlbutlon In wholesale lines contmucs considerably restricted, although ther Is demand for lorn varieties of cotton and woolen goods to provide for Immediate re quirements and eastern manufacturer are very busy. Future orders In most lines are still plsced with great caution, but confi dence In th future is stronger. I Conditions In Iron and steel continue Jis- sppnintlng. The loading Interest still main tains estsnnsneo quoiauona, yet price cut ting Is general In seversl linos, snd vn with this new business Is slow In developing. Rome of the lerger mills are operating at about 60 per cent ot capacity, althougu largely on contracts. Stocks of pig Iron sre Increasing and prices show a sagging tendency In consequence. Structural ma terials continue" quiet. In the primary market ror dry gooos ins feHture of Importance Is the Increasing evi dence of shortness of stocks In Jobbers' hands, supplies in the west especially hav ing been reduced to a minimum. Export business has ceased for the present owing to advanced prices In nearly all lines bought for China. Tlie maraei ror prim ciom varn goods is unusually strong, and al though prices have advanced converters are placing orders as far ahead as possible, Olnghams show an Improvement, especially In aouthern lines of st s pies. Ther has been a general opening of the higher grades of fancy worsted In th laen's wear market this week and clothing nuyers are snowing Increased Interest and activity. Whll the trend of the market for woolen rood has not been fully determined the tendency p pesrs to be In favor of better grsde fabrics. Prices for footwear are firm at the ad vanced rates demanded by manufacturers owing to high cost of leather, but pur chases by vlaltlng buyers In the aggregate continue disappointing. Shipments of over 91,0o0 esses from Boston are the largest weekly movement for over a year. Prices of domestlo hides were somewhat easier, with the einceptlon of branded stock, which continues strong. Country hides sre lower. All kinds of sole leather are In fair demand, tout the market for upper leather is quiet. BRADSTREET'S REVIEW OF TRADE Baalnes la Qalet evnd ladnatrlal Operation Are Below Normal. NEW YORK, Feb. . Bradstreet's tomor row will sayi Trade Is quiet as a whole and Industrial operations are still below normal In most lines. Conservatism In buying is still marked and ther Is present th feeling of disappointment hitherto noted at the failure of spring trade to open up mora rapidly. Som measures of trade . volume showed slight recession m February from January, but the recession record waa an encouraging one and the improvement over the same month a year ago, when bualness was at a low ebb, is general and marked. Collections are little changed and classed as fair aa a whole. The disposition In many lines is to attribute slowness of demand la opening up to fear of tariff revisions, but there la manifest now a disposition to recognise mor fully th play of natural condition and restriction of ooneumptlv requirements proceeding from reduced power of th community. First, probably In point of activity at present ar the de mands for fertilisers, seeds. Implements and similar goods, this being most marked at western centers. Cotton goods aa at whole are fairly active, some lines are firm and slow deliveries are complained of In a tew brnche4. Cotton yarn ar firmer and print cloths 4ctlve. Worsted men's war goods are also selling well for next fall. A few woolen lines also ar active, but then goods aa a whole are still quiet aa are woolen dress fabrics and this trad might be better. The leather trades are fairly active and the shipments of shoa are soak In a far better exhibit than some time ago or than in tne same penou yr m. In th manufacturing Industrie, such as iron and steel business Is quieter. Stom larg orders for rails have been placed, but pig iron is weaker and flnlshsd products are less aotlv despite concessions in many lines. . . , Business failures In the United States for the week ending February 4, ar 38. aaalnst 811 last week, 871 Hi the sam week of 1808, 198 In 1907. 204 In 1908 and 207 tn 19.
