OMAHA. Feb. 4. 1909.
Light snow flurries occurred in the lower
lake region and eastern states within the
last tw-ecty-four hours and generally cloudy
weather prevails throughout the eastern
tat thi morning. The weather continues
lair throughout the central valleys ana
southern states. Light snows ar falling
on the southern Rocky mountain plateau
and generally cloudy conditions prevail on
the Pacific slope. An area of low pressure
ha developed over the upper Mississippi
and Missouri valleys and eastern slop of
the Rocky mountains and generally warmer
weather Is shown from the mountains east
to the Atlantic coast. A very decided fall
In temperature ha occurred on the Pacific
slop since th preceding report and condi
tion are favorable for cooler In thi vicin
ity by Friday afternoon, with continued
fair tonight and Friday.

NEW TORK. Feb. 4 The nrnfeaainnal
limitations of the current stock market re
strict the swing of price to a compara
tively narrow nng. The difficulty of cur
tailing the advance further was becoming
manifest before operations were concluded
yesterday and the reaction natural under
the circumstance followed todav. These
trivial fluctuations do not represent anv
significant chanre of oolnlons on values
from day to day.
1 ne condition underivlna- the market Is
clearly one of nelect and of waiting for
clearer light on the situation. The Invest
ment demand for bond continues excellent,
tne large dally volume of buslnesa In ex
hrtlng Issue at the Stock exchange being
constantly supplemented by successive new
issues which are quickly taken up. The ex
tent to which this process has been car
ried and the various Inroads on the cash
reserve of the bank is at last beginning
to make some Impression on money rates
rather to the satisfaction than otherwise
of the banking community. Call loan did
not fall below 2 per cent today and the
maximum rose to 2 per cent, which makes
the record for the new year. The renewed
call of the secretary of the treasury upon
the deprmltory banks for the return of an
other laO.Ono.OOO of government funds by
February 28. offered the ostensible reason
for the lessened Inclination of tenders to
accept bids recently prevailing for loans.
There was soma Increase of demand on the
part of the borrowers aa well. With the
effect of this hardening of money rates
transferred to th foreign exchange market
to lower ratea there, foreigner have shown
increased disposition to aell stocks rn New
Y'ork. Such selling waa an Influence In the
early depression In the stock market
today.
Consolidated Go exerted a depressing in
fluence by a drop which e-tsbllshed a new
low price for th stock, seemingly prompted
by th determination of the company to
make a years trial of the fin-cent r law
without further erf fort to mrrte-t it in liti
gation. The euwpiclon and dlatrust with
which yesterday allegations of Improve
ments In th copper trad were received
resulted In a declln In the copper Indus
trials. The price of th metal wss reduced
gain here and In London and the efficacy
tf the reduction announced yesterday by
th principal producer In securing orders
waa doubled. Th unoheerful view of the
Iron and steel trada confirmed the feeling
of dissatisfaction with metal trade condi
tions and affected aantlmant towards values
In general, although with no special effect
on the steel Industrials. Opinions en the
tariff revision prospects which seem to
have authority are canvassed with great
attention In the financial district, showing
the importance attached to the subject.
There waa a report In circulation today of
probable new alignments in the ways and
means committee or tne nouse wnicn
seemed to promise freer action in the re-
Islon croeram and which emphasised the
wish to curtail market operations pending
the settlement of the progTs,m. Th cut in
trunk line freight rates in the dispute
tver differentials pet ween Boston ana
trunk line terminal points was not liked.
The cheaper railroad stocks again supplied
the sustaining points tn the market on
deal" rumor, the Gould group being con-
nicuoua Ther was some growtn in tne
Influence on th general list of these special
points of strength In the course of the
day.

LONDON, Feb. 4. Money wa easy to ob
tain on the market today and discounts
were quiet. On the Stock exchange the new
Issues checked uny material expansion of
business In gilt-edged securities, but con

proved, while Mexican rails strengthened
on dividend prospects.
American securities started Irregular and
were barely maintained at parity in the
forenoon. Business was spotty, principally
in the low priced Issues. Later Denver A
Rio Grande and Chesapeake A Ohio mo
nopolized attention, the other securities
moved irregularly and the market closed
dull. Copper shsres were adversely In

of the metal.

HOGS The aupply ef nog waa very
moderate today and the quality wa noth
ing extra. Th reduced receipt at all
oolnta had a very stimulating Influence
upon the demand and packer were free
buyer right from the start at prices 10015c
higher than yesterday. As usual, the good
grsde wer th best sellers and showed
the most Improvement, but the light and
medlum-weiaht aradea wer taken readily
and In some rases snowed fully aa much
dvanr as the more desirable grades. It
was simply a cas of wanting th bog and
the quality did not cut o very much figure.
