He made many criti cisms, one of which was the beardless face. This criticism was at once disclaimed by several people who saw Mr. Lincoln when he was Inaugurated, March 4, 1861, and who declared positively that the president was smooth shaven at that time. But now the Century Magazine comes to the rescue of the artist and in its February Issue reproduces a number of photographs of the emancipator. Borne of these photo graphs show him smooth shaven and some snow him with a beard. The last one taken before his Inauguration, In January issi, biiow i.im wun a run beard. This was but a couple of months before his Inaug uratlori. which proves the contention of Mr. Wa'tnoe that Mr. Lincoln wore a beard when nominated, the proof being doubly strong for the reason that In Mr. Lincoln's own hand this Inscription Is written the bottom of the picture: "A. Lincoln, January 2, 1S61; Springfield, 111." "I reiterate what I told the Board of Ed ucation on March IS, 1908, one month be fore the statue was unveiled, said Mr. Wallace. "At that time I aald: 'The Schiller bust In nivervlew park la bad; the caryatides on the Toung Men's Christian association building are disgraceful; the sculpturing on the high school pediments is vile, but this statue of Mr. Lincoln la worse than any." At that time The Bee said: "When a man is sick he takes the advlcs of his physician, and when he has a law suit he consults an attorney; and so in this case, not knowing much about art, we would prefer to submit to the Judgment of some recognised artist of standing, like Mr, Wallace, or, better yet, to several of them." Mr. Wallace says that She whiskers are immaterial, but that he objected in the name of art and for the reason that the statue Is bad in practically every partic ular.
