NEW TORK. Jan. 27-Prlces of stocks
were lifted In various quartera on the list
today without much difficulty. The deal
ings were not active at any time, but de
mand was unsettled by various reports of
railroad deals and the supply offering for
eala waa ao Inconsiderable that light buy
ing sufficed to make an Impression on
prices.
The state of the money market relieved
the holders of stocks from any pressure
for securing financial resources. All signs
confirm the plethoric condition of the
money market. Interest rstes are declin
ing. New Tork trust companies are pre
pared to comply with the 16 per cent re
serve requirement which goes Into effect
on February 1. compared with the 10 per
cent cash reserve now held, and these in
stitutions hold large additional deposits
with bsnks. Their own deposits have now
risen well over 11,000,000.000 and the diffi
culty of placing their resources haa given
rise to discussion of a reduction of the
rate of Interest paid on deposits from 8 per
cent now offered. The call upon the United
States treasury for current redemption of
bank notes is so great and the drain upon
gold holdings so severe as to give the
department officials much concern. This
and other irUrns ot slow business discoursge
large buying of securities, but the easy
money market makes a disinclination to
sell.
Yesterday's salt, of Chesapeake & Ohio
to the Hawley Interests gave fresh vitality
to storlea of deals and the election of E. H.
Harrlman to the New York Central direc
torate met an expectation long held In the
financial district. The Influence of these
two Incidents waa traceable through most
of the price movement which occurred dur
ing the day. The Ooulcl group was conspic
uous and New Tork Central also made re
sponse. The market was sluggish and
languid outside the currents of these spe
cial Influences. There was another reduc
tion in tha quotations for copper at the
New Tork Metal exchange. London was
somewhat disturbed by the stiffening
money market and signs of congestion in
new investment Issues. A million dollars
was engaged in New Tork for shipment
to Argentina on London account. The
military activity in Bulgaria sent some ap
prehension through the financial market.
The realising usual in a narrow profeasional
market modified the day's exchanges and
made the closing tone irregular.
The pressure to find employment for the
growing accumulations of money resulted in
a bond market of extraordinary breadth.

CATTLB Receipts of cattle were mod

of the offerings, the supply as usual being
made up largely of short-fed and warmed
up natives, with a sprinkling of hay-fed
and pulp-fed westerns.
Packers were slow In. getting out Into tha

Steady figures. There waa a healthy under
tone to tho trade, but the Indifferent tone to
eastern advices prevented any matrlal ad

There were about forty loads of cows and
helfera on sale. Oood killing grades of all
kinds met with a fairly good demand and
prices were steady to a little stronger than
yesterday. Medium and common sturr,
however, waa rather alow.
In stockers and feeders the demand ex
ceeded tha supply so far as desirable offer
ings were concerned and prices ruled strong.
On the other hand there waa quite a large
proportion of lightweight and low-grade
stuff here, for which the Inquiry waa very
limited, and the trade ruled slow with prices
ratner weak on anything or this Kino.

HOGS With another heavy run of hogs
both hers and at other points, the packers
had enough of an advantage to force a
sluirp decline In vaiuea all along the Una.
There waa some outside buying early at
prices about loc lower than yesterday, but
for the most part packers held off and
while they bought quite a few buga On this
basis they made an effort to get the com

thua making a alow, weak trade right from
tha surt. Aa high as $6.20 was paid for
choice heavy hogs as against a top yester
day of $6.30. The bulk of the trading today
waa at and tight around to.iwcM.Ot, as
against a bulk yesterday ot $6,9049.10. The
market weakened as the morning advanced
and along toward noon blda and sales were
