Liberal exports for the wcck from Argentina and Australia were ' largely Instrumental In creating a weak tunc in the wheat market here today. AtthouKh there waa considerable selling pressure manifested throughout tho day, prices made only slight declines, owing to moderate support given by leading bulls. The news ot the day waa almost entirely In favor of the bears. Reports from India claimed that the drouth In parts of that country has been broken, while in the Vnlted States rains were general over-the winter wheat belt. UNITED STATES STEEL RISES Railroad Issnea Advance la lym patkr Orersoberrlptlom of Roa slaa Loan la Paris Tends to Ease Money ltatlon. NEW YORK. Jsn. 22-The narrow di mensions of the stock market msde its principal feature still today. Vie movement In United States Hteel attracted a good deal of attention, owing to the hopes that the usual strong sympathetic effect of this stock on the action of ihe general list would prove effective In reviving the mar ket. Yesterday's 2-polnt rise In United Stale Steel did, in fact, have the effect of bring ing In some orders for the stock todsy, the result being a spread in the prlca of H at the opening on an extreme advance of i. carried it within a shade of 66, where it hesitated, owing to the very large selling orders awaiting It at that point. At 66 the first sale was of 10.000 sh.tres and large sales followed. The preferred stock also advanced to 115. which Is a record price, the previous record at 114H having been made In November last. The sinking fund bonds of the corporation are ruling also at about their highest price. There was no definite news to account for this movement. Assertions that some large orders for steel rails were coming in from the railroads were denied bv officials of the corporation. The report that an agree ment had been reached in congress to limit the amount of the proposed reduction on steel was of such a character as to bo In capable of verification or of disproof. For this reason, probably, the movement failed to awaken the customary response In the genera list. Rome of the railroad equip ment stocks which are largely consumers of steel products showed somo sympathy. Quite a varied list of Industrial special ties rose briskly on newly awakened activ ity, for tho most part unexplained by any news. Jn the case of American Sugar tho rise was attributed to the application of the company to have Its shares admitted on the regular list, a request which Implies the Intention to publish detailed informa tion of earnings and financial conditions. Hie requirements of the uncovered short interests were supposed to figure in some .!ne"f ."""Men advances. The rise In .National Lead was coincident with another reduction In the price, of copper and a decline in silver In the London market. The tops sold tip to $1.30, which was 10c higher than snvthlng brought yesterday, with the bulk selling at and right around 9iXtf6.16. ss against a bulk yesterday of $;.MHr(r.U6. bater the market eased off. so that the earlv advance was wiped out. In fact, packers held In no more than steady fig ures throughout and after first round the trade ruled dragging and weak at barely steady prices. KHUEP Receipts ot sheep were light this morning, onlv ten curs, ahnut 2,,'ion head, being reported In. Included among the receipts were seven cars ot laiiih.i which were not offered for sale, leaving onlv three cars on sale. With the reduc tion in receipts this morning, a little firmer tone was noticeable to the trade and tho demand la again fairly well up to the sup ply. The market throughout the week has not been very favorable to the selling In terests. In fact, prices sagged from day to day so that values are around 2fi'Ci lower than a week ago on all grades of fat sheep and lambs. At this season of the year a good many lamby ewes arrive while they are not In the Nst condition for the market, still are not far enough along to prevent them from passing Inspection, nnd these are selling at gradually reduced fig ures. In the feeder division prices declined also this week. The Inquiry from the country continues to he about equal to the receipts of feeding stock, so that no very great changes have been noted from day to day. Kurly ln the week prices declined somewhat In sympathy with the reduction in fat sheep snd lambs, but general condi tions show no material change as coin pared with last week. In spite of the fact that the weather was so bad and receipts were so light there seemed to be a little more life to the trade, buyers getting out early, and it took them but a short time to clean up the supply of beef cattle at prices that were steady to a little belter than yester day ln general, however, the market shows a decline of fully 2a40c for the week to bring about any improvement in the situation. There were only about twenty loaas 01 cows and hellers in tne yarns tnis morn ing, and as outside buyers took more Inter est ln the trade than on yesterday, business was somewhat better and prices perhaps a little higher for the more desirable grades at least. As compared with a week ago. however, the cows and heifers are selling fully 25c lower and there is a rather weak tone to the trade on all kinds. There were quite a few stockers and feeders Included among the receipts today and for the most part they changed hands at about steady prices. The demand throughout the entire week has been good and the trade ln a good, heaithy condition. For anything desirable In the stocker and feeder line prices are fully steady as com pared with a week ago. HuGS Keduceu supplies at all markets this morning caused a better feeling In the hog trade and prices ate again on the upward movement. Ihe hammering given the market during the last tnree or four days was the means of culling off re ceipts this morning, so that runs at all points this morning dropped below the estimates for tha day At Chicago, with M"' head expected, only 24,0 head ar rived, and the rlvrr markets also showed similar decreases.
