NEW YORK STOCKS AND BONDS Striking; Feature of the Day's Market is Its Dullness. VALUES MOVE BUT SLIGHTLY Close Is Firm Beraaae of Resorts of OTerssbscrlptlon of Rasslaa Loam ia Paris Boads Are Irregnlar. NEW YORK. Jan. n.-The movement of prices of stocks today offered little of In terest, the striking feature of the marke being Its dullness. Prices are moved but slightly either up or down. No obstacle to speculative activity Is found In the money market, which continues to relax without any effect from the various Impor tant reductions which are being met. Banks are beginning to repay to the government the proportion of government deposits called for the coming Saturday, but this Is more than offset by the high excess of government expenditures over receipts, which makes a dally return of funds to the channels of the money market. The move ment of foreign exchanges today was away from p the gold export point, and the ques tion was raised whether the option of the Russian loan subscriptions In Paris to morrow was to be destined to put an end to the outgo of gold from here. Both the Bank of England and the Bank of France made strong returns today, the former gain ing over aJ.OOO.OOO and the latter over 310, 000,000 In gold. All the Items In the English bank statement showed Its Increase of con trol of the London money market during the week and made It evident that it will be able to attract gold to London if it da sires. The application of the American Sugar Refining company to have Its stock ad mitted to the regular listed department of the Stock exchange was -the occasion of widespread comment over the changed or. der of things from the time when the af fairs of that company were more closely guarded from oubllclty than those of any other company. Regular listing of Its se curities will Involve the supplying reports of operations In much greater detail. This Is In the line of progress In doing away with abuses which have been going on with out attracting much attention. Measures of discipline against Stock exchange mem bers have been rigorous of late and have been supplemented by admonitions of less notoriety. The sittings of the committee sppointed by Governor Hughes to investi gate the exchanges Is believed to have some connection with this course of events and the comparative dullness of the specu lation may be not entirely disassociated from It. The note of discouragement In the trade outlook voiced by the Iron and steel trade organs and another reduction In the price of copper here and In London, did not pi-event the metal stocks from figuring In the only considerable movement of the day. The general market refused Its usual sympathetic response to any de cided aetion of United Slates kneel. Bncii buying as there was late in the day was ascribed to the expectation ofga favorable Influence from the reported oversubscrip tions to the Russian loan In Paris. The firm closing retained about all of the day's gains. Bonds were irregular. Total sales, par value, 35,732,000. As a conse quence dealers were slow ln getting out Into the yards and first bids were generally 10H15c lower than yesterday for the bulk of the beef steers. Packers picked up a few lightweight and cheap cattle at prices not a great deal different from yesterday, but anything having weight was slow sale at the full decline. The market Is fully 7tc lower than ten days ago and the most of the decline has fallen on the more desir able beeves. . . Receipts of cows and heifers were com paratively liberal and although there was a good demand for this grade of catlle the trade was slow ln opening snd what trad ing was done during tho early hours was on the basis of a lOtglic decline as com pared with yesterday. Good heavy cows seemed1 to get the most of the decline, but all gradea are 26(36c lower than at the closo of la.n week. Business in stockers and feeders was rea sonably active today, as the offerings of tills kind were not very large and thero was a good demand from both yard traders and country buyers. Packers are still tak ing the bulk of the fleshy steers at better prices than feeders will pay, but the light and medium weight stuff that has any qual ity at all Is moving freely at fully steady prices, while as usual the common light weight slutf Is neglected and lower. .
