GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKET Market Opened Strong and Had a Steady Tone. CABLES - CAME IN STEONO II e ports Mow a Larger Drtntn la Wheat Than In Any Other Grain Corn and Oat - ' Strong. OMAHA. Jan. 1, 19"9. Liverpool cables rime In strong today and, owing to the decrease of stocks In all the market, the market opened strong and had a very steady tone, advancing steadily from the opening but eased off lust before the close. The buying Interest In wheat was especially strong and there was a good amount of this grain taken on by the larger dealers. The rep.-rU show a larger decrease In wheat than of other grains. A good domestic demand has pre vailed the last few days for cash wheat and It Is beMeved It will continue. There Is no great rc-ason for a change In prices, altrfiiirh number of traders are un i'y to the price. Wheat opened at Jl-OStfLOaH and closed at $1.064, bid. Corn and oata both opened strong nd had a good tone.' The "bull-' had a little the most power, but there wns no great sdvanoe fn prices. Receipts In corn show trore sign of increasing.- but the con sumption demand- Is still slow, and it will e a difficult task to advance prices. Corn openeii at lc and closed at m,r bid. Receipts cf oats are til light and the demand Is not wbnl could be called good. Oats-opened at lHe and closed at 51 -V. UHAIN AND PROVISIONS Kea tores of the Trading and Closing Prices on Board of Trade. CHICAGO, Jan. 18. Small primary re ceipts and -prospects of a Liberal decrease for the Week In the visible supply of wheat in tills country caused a firm market for wheat here today. At the close prices were V'io higher for all deliveries than Sat urday's tlnul quotations.- Corn and pro vision closed firm, but oats were easy. Rumors to the effect that the visible sup ply statement would show, a big decrease In the a vu liable stocks In the United States were In 1'lrculutlon throughout the entire session and were larguly responsible for the firmness wnlcn prevailed In the wheat pit all day. It was the quite general Impression- that the decrease would amount to nearly 2,ouO,OfiO bushels, compared with a decrease ef 6W.C0O bushels at the same )Kints a ye.ar.Aio., Owing tQ.Jnnblllty to se cure the statistics regarding the stocks at Kuffaki, however, the official statement was not given out today as usual, but It was announced the figures would be made public tomorrow. Leading bulls gave the market niodeiate support throughout the entire day. The close was firm, with May ut 11.004 and July at 87tiC. Clearances of wheat and flour were equal to 308,000 bu. Minneapolis, Duluth and Chicago reported receipts of MS cars, against 2117 cars last week and 73S cars a year ago. The corn market waa firm. The market closed firm, with pilces up itpfco to c compared with Saturday's close. Oat ' were firm nearly all day. Cash prices were lip fcOAio compared with the previous session. . Trade on the whole was quiet. The close was easy, with prices a shade higher to Ho lower, with May at 61'ic end July at '45Tc'. RAILEOAD RUMORS DISCOUNTED Trader Refase to Be Impressed by Statement Now York Ceatral la to Hold Secarltle of Harrlmaa Line. NEW YORK. Jan. 11-The peculatlon fell Into neglect today and failed to hold the awaknned Interest which gave promise on faturday of reviving the market. Senti ment was less Impressed by the rumor of rA, dB de,llB. which were In clrctilatlon till, but with less semblanc of authority or Indeed of probability. A caae In point rresented by the story that the New .orC. Centrl wag to fall Into the control ot l. H. Ilarrlman and was to be used J central holding company for the vast limitations In the railroad world connected with his name. An attempt at present at a dictatorship of thl character did hot ap peal to plausibility and rather served to throw doubt around some other reports of other railroad change which hav btisaed 1th effect lately. New York Central Itself was a strong feature In the early market and Its advance was of sympathetic In fluence In sustaining price elsewhere. This influence waned In the dull market later In the day. There Is some feeling that the money market may be slightly affected by the heavy requirement ahead of It, although confidence remained unimpaired that nothing like stringency Is to be appre hended. By rext Saturday the National banks will bo called upon to give up the first $l,ooo,f of the $2fi,000,OO0 of govern ment deposits, which have been recalled by the secretary of the treasury. The day's developments also Indicate a further outgo of gold from here. The Bank of England was obliged to give up gold for South America today and Paris again secured the arrivals of South African gold In Lon don. The advance of last week in the Bank of England discmint rate Is thus proved futile as a measure to secure gold to the bank and a further rise In the bank rate Is discussed In London. No gold was engaged l.ere either for London or Paris, but there were further engagement for 8nuth America on London orders. The Russian loan allotment was over-subscribed In Ijond'n, but the premium over the Issue I rice was reduced. Much stress Is laid on the course to be taken by th gold move ment after Pari ha subscribed to the Russian loan. The drooping tendency of tho copper In dustrial was a drag on the general mar ket and was directly due to another reduc tion In the price of the market on New York metal exchange and to a sharp de cline In the price of copper warrants In the London market. Current estimates of the amount of copper stocks now on hand run very high, rising far above the -figure of the proceed of attempted corners In past history of the trade. The supreme court of the United States again supplied a chastealng Influence to the speculation In the affirmation of the judicial decreea of the state of Texas against the Waters Pierce Oil company. The effect of this decision Is to confirm the impression of the widening exercise of the powers to regulation of corporations, which ha been growing tin In the financial district anew for several weeks pest. Rail traffic of ficials did not offer anything stimulating to speculation In their weekly canvass of conditions. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales par value. 8.M4,000. Desirable beeves were very scarce and the trade was not overly active at any time and price not more than steady. Packer seemed to show a preference for the light and cheaper grades of beef and In some case these sold to slightly better advantage than toward the close of last week, but cattle showing .either weight or quality were slow sale and not mors than steady at any time. The demand for butcher stock wa very active from all aourcea and, as the offer ings were of very moderate proportion, they changed bands readily at prices ranging from steady to about lis; higher than Fri day. Packers preferred the low and medium-priced grades rather than the good to choice stulf, while the outlet for com mon and canning kinds wss restricted and price low and unsatlaafotory.
