OMAHA. Jan. 16, 1909. The area of high pressure In the north west, reported In the preceding report aa moving down over the central valleys, has spread over the Missouri and Mississippi valleys and lake region, with lta crest now overlying Manitoba. The cold wave ac companying the high, did not extend as far south aa was expected, but lta greatest effect waa felt over the upper valleys, where the temperature was from 20 to 3u degrees lower than on Thursday morning. The weather Is generally cloudy over the central valleys this morning, and light snows arre falling Irr the extreme upper Mississippi and Missouri valleys, and light raina in tha central and lower valleys. The weather continues unsettled through, cut the eastern and southern portions, ani lisht rain ara falling in the eastern atatet this morning, and have fallen In the south rn atates within the last twenty-foui hours. The high pressure now over tha valleys will continue eastward, and will be followed, In this vicinity, by rising tem perature tonight and Saturday, with possi bly snow flurries tonight or Saturday. Local Forecaster. NEW TORK. Jan. 1S.-Pesunory trading by professional operators made up a great part of the stork market today which did not differ much In that respect from pre vious days thla week. The professional trader talked much of the site of the short Interest In the market and a belief In Its unwieldy proportions had as much to do with the caution of the bear clement and the firm tendency as did any happen ing of favorable purport to values. The rise In price of a number of indi vidual stocks was due to special causes and their strength had some sympathetic effect In sustaining other stocks. Very cir cumstantial reports were current of the Intention to Incorporate the Wisconsin Cen tral Into the Canadian Pacific group. The rise In the seaboard bituminous co.U car riers waa the effect of the great Improve ment of earnings disclosed by the Balti more Ohio for the lest half of the last calendar year disclosed by yesterday's semi-annual report. Brooklyn Transit once again responded to a rumor that an Initial dividend waa to be declared on the stock. The movement of the general list waa lan guid and Indifferent In spite of the wide movements In these special stocks. The demand was sufficiently aggressive to promise an effective upward movement, and the dependence on the uncovered short In terest In the estimates of an advance In the price of print cloths was welcomed aa a possible Index of some commercial Im provement, but thla was rather more than offset by another recession In the price of copper at the New York Metal exchange. Stocks of copper are said to be accumu lating. The metal Industrials, In conse quence, were rather heavy, Including United States Steel, and did not share In the occa sional upward movement or prices. A feature of the day's money market was the reported lending of a round amount for thirty days at 14 per cent, a rate consid erably below tho prevailing call loan rate, and arguing the expectation, therefore, of lower money rates. The estimates of ti.e week's currency movement show that cash Is continuing to flow to the New York banks In largn amounts. The $5,7fi3.ono ac cretion from the subtreasury operations haa been equally apparent by tho receipts on balance on the Interior movement by ex preps and the week's gold exports have not required more than half thla gross gain. New York exchange at Chicago continues to advance and bunk note currency con ttnuea to flow back to the sources of Issue. The financial world as a whole awaits with much Interest the effects to follow the iHSUrt of the RuRslan loan In Paris next week. The Paris demand for gold continues tip to the present, sterling exchange falling and the discount rate advancing there to day In spite of the action of Bank of Eng land In advancing the official discount rate yesterday. There Is an undercurrent of un easiness In the financial world leet the Russian loan Issue shall not put an end to this policy of accumulation on the part of the French bank, In which event It will be concluded that some ulterior motive ex ists which may preclude a political upheaval In the near future. London's sales of stocks in thla market today ex ceded the pur ha en and London was able to command the shipment of $25i,Ono In gold from New York to South America. Bonds were firm. Total 1,704 1,258 2.9C9 CATTL.K Receipt were comparatively light, as I usually the case on Friday, and there waa no very great change In the mar ket, as comDared with Thursday. Yester day's market grew worse a the morning advanced and closed decidedly weak and i lower all around. There wa no Improve- 1 ment In the demand from any ourre to- ' day and while there wa no further decline In value the trade waa on the dull and dragging order from start to finish. As . compared with a week ago the heavy cat- , tie are 25 36c lower, while even the light, hand weight grades how a decline of HHJ? 26c. All classes of buyer have been mak ing an effort to cheapen up thla week, and with this end In view have been decidedly bearish on the heavier and higher priced cattle, while buying the lighter arid cheaper grades quite freely. In cow stuff the market held Just about steady, but there was no great amount of life to the trade, and the feeling waa rather weak. About the middle of this week price for butcher stuff was the highest that they have been during the season, but on Thursday all classes of buyers were bearish and the market grew decidedly lower all around. Most of then decline wa on' the more desirable grades, as they were naturally the higher priced loads, while good cutters and butcher cows did not show so much dec'lne. For the week values are not far from steidy on the gen eral run of butcher and beef cows, but from 15c to 25e lower on the better grades, as well as on the common and canning klrds. There waa very little doing In atoekers snd feeders, as supplies were very right. Oood steers of sll grades ruled fully steady, while common nd light snd medium cattle show a decline of fully 26c for the week. Quotations on rattle: ood to rhotee corn-fed steers.
