rUICAGO .GRAIN AMD PROVISIONS
Feat area ef tne Trad In a; and Closlag
Prices aa Board of Trade.
CHICAGO, ' Jan. 18. -r A bear raid on the
wheat market rate in the session today re
sulted In a further sharp decline following
the severe - slump ot yesterday. At the
cloae prices were H'fJ'lHc below the final
quotations of the previuus session. Corn
t-loaed steady, oats easy, and provisions
strong. 1
Lac of support waa aald to have been
the reason for the extreme weakness mani
fested In the wheat pit during the final
half hour. The bull leaders, who have
formally given the market good support
on any material decline In prices, held aloof
today, leaving the bears In full control.
Belling late In tbe day was quite general,
but Individual transactions were not of
great magnitude. Home excuse for selling
waa found In an official report which
showed that the exports of wheat and flour
from Ike. United States In December wore
less than one half of those of the corre
sponding time a year ago. Lower cables
and a heavy fall of snow over a large sec
tion of the winter wheat belt were fac
tors that Inspired selling earlier ia the
day. A brisk demand for cash wheat and a
decrease ef 1,112.000 bushels In the world's
visible, supply partially offset these bearish
influences. The greatest selling pressure
was on the May delivery and that option
declined nearly 2 cents from the high point
of the day, the low point being reached
at 31.04Vj. The market closed weak at al
most the bottom, with May at 11.04 and
July at tHiWo. Clearances of wheat
and flour were equal to 842.000 bushels.
The corn market held steady, prlcea fluct
uating within a. o range. The market
closed-. steady, with prices unchanged to
a shade lower, compared with yesterdnv's
close. Final quotations on May were 61 MP
614c, and on July 6le.
Trade 4n oats whs quiet and the market
steady. Demand for cash grain was re
ported to be very dull, and prices were Vc
lower. The market closed easy, with prices
VfciCia Jower. with May at 6IV1O and July
at 4CV&C
Provisions were firm. A falling off of
S.nrio head of hogs, as shown bv the offi
cial report of receipt here yesterday as
compared with the previoua estimate,
caused considerable Covering by shorts.
The close waa strong, with prices up TViO
10c to 20c.

NEW TORK. Jan. 12. Selling pressure
continued In evidence In stojk transaction!
today, but was In a pretty spotty and slow
wsy. E. H. Hsrrlmsn appeared at his
office for the first tlme.ini-e before the
Christmas holidays and 'horeby put en end
to the occupation of bearish uue,Htors who
had been disseminating rumors of his serious
Illness In efforts to depress prices. tne
agreement of the Turkish government tn
accept the offer made by Austro-Hnngary
ror an indemnity for the annexation ot
Bosnia and Hersegovina waa accepted aa a
definite removal of one deep-seated cause
of unsettlement In foreign stock markets.
With these changes, which had been ag
gravating the weakness in stocks, the bear
element took on a share of caution and.
Increaaed reserve In the wav in which
they pushed operations. The belief that
the bear party was becoming unduly
numerous and cumbersome In the course
of active selling campaign, and putting It
self in a vulnerable position for a turn t.n
them by the bulls, added to this disposition
of reserve. The result was seen in the
decrease In the activity of the market and
the disposition to take stocks al conces
sions to cover shorts. The o.ivlng at con
cessions wss obvious, although opinion
varied as to the proportion due to short
covering and to renewal of accumulation
in the Ion Interest. Whatever the source
of the buying, It was not aggressive nrd
did not pursue an advance In prices, as
seen In the dwindling activity of the mar
ket on rallies and the sudden i'el.v;se In
prices at last. Recent predictions were ful
filled In the Increase In the Chlcaio A
Alton dividend, and Toledo, St. Louis ft
western, as holder of control of Alton, ad
vanced In sympathy. Other minor stocks
continued to rise, with repetitions of ru
mors of favorable developments. The Wis
consin Central stocks especially were af
fected by reports of alleged negotiations
for absorption by the Canadian Pacific.

CATTLE Receipts were satrly liberal
again today, with no material change In
the general character of the offerings. Ad
vices from eastern niarketa were still some
what bearish and the ample offerlnga had
a tendency to make buyers look for cheaper
cattle. It was late tn the forenoon before
they started out to fill their orders and
bids on beef cattle were pretty close to
lOo lower on an average, with the trade
very alow at the decline. Some ot the more
desirable handy weight beeves sold -about
as well aa they did yesterday, but the
heavier cattle were mostly 10c lower.
The supply of. cows and heifers waa not
overly large, arid with both local packers
and outside butchers anxioua to secure
the offerings, the trade was reasonably
active and for the moat part prlcea were
fully aa good aa yesterday, and In some
cases better. Common and canning grades
show very little change from day to day.
The Inquiry for stockers and feeders con
tinues good from all sources and prices
were .'lrm again today on anything At all
useful In this line.

HOGS Receipts of bogs were quite lib
eral today, ISD cars being reported in. Tbe
cause of yesterday's sharp decline Is to
be found in the fsct that receipts at all
markets were exoessive, which gave buyers
the sdvantage. The demand this morning
was fully equal to the supply, so that a
good proportion of yeaterday's decline was
regained before the close ot toaay s mar
ket. Sales as a rule were in the neighbor
hood of fr&loc higher than yesterday and
after the trade was once under way the
market was reasonably active, ao that a
