miller ia increasing and some good sales

and are bringing good values.
The corn situation la not changed. While
reoelpta continue moderate, the shipping de
mand la not good, and, on the other hand,
the options are strong and ruling ateadily
higher from the recent break, and cash
corn Is in an excellent poaittn.

which dropped price rapidly at the start,

ment In the milling demand for the cash
grain' had a rt renal honing Influence on the
wheatmarket today. At the close prices
were a shade lower to V,c higher, compared
with the previous cloae. Corn and oata
closed, firm and provtstona steady.
Following a severe slump during the first
few minutes of trade, the wheat' market
1 allied sharply and continued firm the re
mainder of the day. . Tha docllna at the
start was due to general selling inspired to
soma extent ky - Uw normou movement
uf wheat from Argentina ftr the week, the
total being reported at W4.0K) bu, compared
wftli 4W,0u0 bu. the corresponding time a
year ago. The principal selling was of the
May delivery and the prion of this option
declined near lc In the first ten minutes
of tbo svaslon. A number of the leading
longs .then came to the rescue with vigor
ous support, which started active covering

NEW YORK, Jan. a There was a very
Irregular tone In the stock market at all
time today. Slocks whjch are often left
In an obscure position for Jong periods
were made conspicuous with successive
spurts to higher prices, but the tone of
the general list was distinctly heavy early
in the day in spite of these advances.
Eater, when the estimate of the week's
changes appeared, and partly nullified the
Impression made by the gold export en
gagements, there was some Improvement
In the general list, but weakness was gen
eral at the closing.
The Individual advances, wlUle sensa
tional to a degree, had no cause to ex
plain them. The bad effect produced by
the engagement of $2,900,000 for ahlpmont
to Pari tomorrow was due rather to Its
Indication of conditions in London than to
any direct effect apprehended In the local
money market. The movement is a meas
ure of relief for Ixindon from the Pari
demand, as yesterday' engagement for
South America was of relief from th de
mand from that source on Ixindon. The
liondon discount rate was sharply affected
today and report were received of a prob
able advance In the official discount rata
of the Bank of England and a movement
by that institution to accumulate gold.
The dimensions of the Inward movement
of cash ti the New York banks deprive
this proernyt of power to ala-m sentiment.
The treasury ha contributed $7,448,000 to
the bank thi week and the estimate
of the express movement from the interior
run to a large um. An important part of
the gain from the eubtreasury is on ac
count of redemption of national bank note
which ts also a feature of ilie movement
from the interior. The arrrint of bank
notes in the United States treasury has
risen again to over $30,000,000, the clerical
force of the department being; Insufficient
to keep up with the task of sorting them
for return to the issuing banks. The ef
fect of this 1 to find a temporary rest
ing place for them which relieves their
pressure on the circulation to some ex
tent. Some attention was given to the
wheat market In connection with the fear
that the low temperature might injure
the winter wheat crop In the absence of
mow covering.

the northwest and east of the Kooky
Mountains. It is gradually decreasing over

crest of the high is moving off the New
Kngland coast this morning. Temjierature
have moderated rapidly during the last
twenty-four hours from the Lake region
west over the central valleys to the Rocky
mountain and aero weather la limited ta
he extreme upper Mlsslastppl and upper
Missouri valleys and northwest. It con
tinues very cold in the nortnwest ana ex
treme upper valley, and will be somewhat
colder. In this vicinity tonight. A depres
sion ot decided energy has developed on
the Pacific slope, and is causing unsettled
weather west of the mountains. The east
ward movement of this low will troba,bly
bring snow flurries over this vicinity to
night or Saturday, with a rising tempera-

In sight this morning tha- niarket ruled
rather dull, with prices no better than
steady on th newt grade and lUQlbc lower
on medium and common stuff. Dealer
loaded up rather heavily yesterday and a
a rule were rather Indifferent buyer this
morning. However, good yearlings brought
a price fully steady with yesterday.
Receipts for the week were fairly liberal
for this season of the year and were Urger
than for the previous week by several thou
sand head and were also very much heavier
than for the corresponding Week of last
vciir. At no time has tne demand been bet
ter than during this week. I'rices have
been pushed upward on all fat lambs, year
lings, ewes and wethers vrSOc over last
week's closing figures and are now at the
highest point reached in months. Iambs
sold during the week up to $7.75, yearlings
up to $d.(6 and ewes at $5.06, record prices
for the season. The demand from packet
has been especially brisk and the trade
throughout the week has been very Kalis
factory as viewed from a sellers stand
