Jan. 6 The professional view of the weakness which developed in the stock market today waa that It wa largely due to the sympathetic effect of the collapse in Consolidated uaa. which proceeded teday only less violently than yesterday. The period of greatest weak ness In Consolidated Oss today, however, was while the general list waa making a aturdy aland aa-alnst the renctlon and was showing a degree of positive strength In some quarters. The action of the mar ket warranted tha Implication that the support waa in the Interest of facilitating a process of liquidation and the pursuit of this purpose had the later effect of weak ening the whole list. The unexpected ad Verse decision In the Consolidated Oaa ult yesterday undoubtedly took the Inter eat committed on the long side unaware and Interfered with the plan of conduct of their market campaign. i no consensua of opinion has been strong that the period of renewed ease In the money market after the turn of the rear would facilitate a revival of speculative activity and conduce to still higher prices for stocks. The money market la rapid I v and sensibly growing easier and other ex pected favorable developments are not lacking, but so many speculative hold ings of stocks apparently have been wait ing for tht opportunity to reallre the profits that the selling outweigh the de mand. The Consolidated Uaa decision un doubtedly ha had a bad effect cn the speculative confidence engendered bv tha assumption that governmental activities were to move In future In favor of the cor porations. The refusal of the supreme court to rntertaln tho rovernmenf ap peal to reopen the Standard Oil fine de cision waa Industriously cited to offset the effect of the gas caae, but Its effect was marred by the announcement of the at torney general's office that the case would be retried. The disappointment in the gas suit has given rise to some timidity re garding the outcome of other suits In which a favorable outcome ha been as sumed with effect In tho stock market, nils Is notably the case regarding the suit to contest the Hepburn law s commodity claiia.. Thla was seen In the suggestion today that congress might be looked to to annul thla clause If It wern upheld by. the supreme court. The uneasiness over the subject of government aggression upon corporations was shown by the manner In which various Incidents bearing on the subject were dwelt upon. The adoption by IlniiJ,ea iS.tatea ""nB,, of resolution calling for Information of an alleged opln V tn a"orney general sanctioning the purchase of the Tennesse. Coal & Iron company by the United States Steel corpor ation was thus dwelt upon. So was a re. 5rL.thi a ecret InvesUgation of meat Th- !n5.hou"e.a had bPn turned. Theie waa more activity to the trade than on yesterday, but no noticeable Improve ment for any grade. Tha warmed-up cattle sold, aa usual, very uneven and were quoted generally about Italic lower than the best time last week. The market for cows snd heifers was not overly active, but dean able gradea of h. weights aold fully as well as on yesterday and in fact the trade on light heifer waa a shade stronger. Common and canning grade were- hard to move and in aume caae looked a little lower. Although there waa nut a great deal of activity In th atocker and feeder trade, prices were well sustained o far aa the good kinds mere concerned. There were a number of outside buyers for that class of stock, but both yard traders and country buyers discriminated againtM t lie common, light and medium-weight cattle and II took lower prices ss a rule to move them. The volume of btialneea waa not very large, owing principally to the meager offering of desirable stuff.
