Price an Board of Trade.
CHICAGO. Jan. 4.-Offlcial prediction of
a cold wave for a large part of the
"winter wheat belt caused strength In the
wheat market here today, olosing quota-
tlon showing net gain of '4c. Corn,
.oata and provisions also closed firm.
Aside from the weather bureau forecast
' the wheat market lacked any news of suf
ficient Importance to Inspire buying or
', selling, and oonsequently trading was
quiet nearly all day. The election of offi
ce; a of the Board of Trade, which occurred
'today, also detracted materially from In
' terest In the pit. According to the weather
bureau a cold wave win spread over a
large aectton of this country tonLght and
tomorrow, bringing with It the coldest
weather of the season. As large areas of
seeded wheat are unprotected by snow the
drop In temperature it vvss claimed,, might
''result In' considerable damage. This appre-
' henslon regarding the- fall aown crop
caused fairly active buying during the
final hour of the day, which carried prices
t't the highest point of the session. During
the early part of the day sentiment was
' quite bearish, owing to a decline ot 4s9Sd
a. Liverpool tesulttng from increasing of
ferings of wheat from Argentina. Th
market closed strong at the top, with
May at I1.0M, and July at 99S)C. Clearances

NEW YORK. Jan. 4.- verv tmuvv ineeii
lation miscarried bv the loss of tne Con
solldated Oaa suit to overthrow th New
tork state law llniltlna the charce allowed
to be made for illuminating gas in New
mrit city to 80 cents per l.OOO feet. H w
excessive has been the speculation base!
on an expected contrary decision it would
require a review of the course of the stock
tor many months past to decide. When
ever tho supreme court was In session It
has been tho regular thing, as Monday ap
proached, to run UD the nrice of ( oosoil-
dated Oas on the assumption that th court
was now about to hand down Its decision
in favor of the company. The abrupt an
nouncement that tho company had loat It
suit threw the holders of the stock into a
panic and an alm iet Demendicular dron nf
pjints, by interval a much as 6 points,
was tne conseouenr.
So violent a movement even In a single
stock could not be expected to leave the
general market unaffected by sympathy.
The approach to frenzy, however. In some,
of the selling that accompanied the slump
In the gas stocks must be attributed to a
state of uncertainty over tho general p sl-
tlon into which the stock market wm
coming.
The movement throughout the morning
had been feverish and unsettled, marked by
spasmodic advances In selected stocks, ao
companled by heavy realising under cover
cf the sustaining influence of the advances.
1 he methods followed to Incite some ot
these advances and the Inspiration for the
allegations on which they were bused had
a d quieting effect on speculative confidence
and gave an Impreesion of unstable forces
working for the advance. The collection
of a great mass of well-Informed and In
fluenttial opinion In numerous financial re
view revealed so widespread a skepticism
of the warrant for much ot the later stages
of the rise In stock prices that speculative
sentiment could not but be Impressed. The
Consolidated Gas case incident proved the
decisive factor in determining the shifting
tide of that sentiment. T.:e immediate r.rc
of the khs case was modified by the way
eft open for a renewal of the suit and was
partly neutralixed by the clinching of the
standard Oil success in contesting tne -.
000.000 fine. The heavv arrears of the over
charges collected by the gan company pend
ing the final decision of the suit offered
a sufficiently serious Inroad upon resources
In hand. A greater Influence from this
decision grew out or the extent to wnicn
the assumption has been built on since tne
election that corporation activities were to
bo free from restraint in any degree wnicn
would Impair their profitable employment
To the more volatile minded speculative
class the action of the supreme court seems
to have come a a rude Jolt.
Ot deeper significance waa tne news, less
attended to on the floor of the Stock ex
change, of the lessening activity In various
industrial lines and in railroad tratne. i no
number of surplus Idle freight cars in the
country, after rising for several weeks, i
back now to a figure not touched since
early in September. Railroad traffic man
agers admit a continuance cf this tendency
up to the current returns or iramc. mere
was seasonable easing of the money mar
kets following the yearly Bettlements. ex
cept at Berlin, where discount rates hard
ened. The enormous changes In the vari
ous Item of the weekly tatement of thj
Imperial bank of Germany revealed how
great wa the strain of the annual settle
ments at that point. The strength shown
by Pennsylvania and some of the other
trunk line railroad stocks today aeemed to
be due to an attempted adjustment to the
large gain In the price of New York Central
on Saturday. Tha rise In Missouri i'acuic
waa not explained by any news.

not very Interesting, for while there was
a very good run for a Monday, the trade
was rather dull and featureless. Packers
secerned to want the hogs, but the de
mand was not urgent enough to put any
life or snap Into the movement, with the
result that the market as a whole could
hardly be quoted other than steady as a
rule, and In some cases possibly a little
easier. Salesmen reported that it took a
good deal of work to secure steady prices
on anything but the best loads. A gcod
share of tha hogs sold inside the range,
Su.65(h.85, which was about where thev
eold on Saturday. The beat hog sold from
15.85 up to S6.00. The market closed slow at
&43loc lower.

CATTLE Ki.ceipta ot cattle were the
heaviest that they have been any day
since the middle of December. At the same
llmo other market points were reporting
large cattle runs witn the result that
there was a sharp decline in pi icea all
along the line, especially at this point.
The quihty of I lie beef steers at this
point va generally very poor. In fact
mere vtaa not a nuigie umjii-e mjhu irinjiien
at the yards uml very few that could be
even graded as good. On the kind of cattle
here the market was safely lixjrl5c lower
and dull at the decline, buyers not being
very anxious for the cattle even at tha
decline because of the quality. At the
eaino, time there was a feeling that a really
good load of cattle would not show ao
very much change from last week.
Cows and heilera while not allowing as
much decline as beef steers were neverthe
less lower, most salesmen quoting it as
anywhere from clow to lOc lower than last
week's "lose. While the market xeemed
to be rather dull, still the tattle kept ell
ing and by midday a good share of tho re
ceipts had changed hands
Stockers and feeders, which for some
time back have Lien active sellers a',
steadily strengthening prleea were alow to
day fur tiie first lime in several weeks,
Willi the tendency lower. They, too, might
be best quoted as slow to lx- lower.

SHEEP Tna week started out with good
liberal receipts of sheep and with a goou
hnalthy market. Unfortunately, receipt
were pretty much one kind, there being a
surplus ot sheep, a large proHrtlon of
them ewes, and very fow lambs. In one
way. perhaps, this waa fortunate, as the
demand seemed to be especially good for
sheep. Buyers all had liberal orders and
it was a good active and atrong market
right from the outset. Good wethers, the
same kind that brought 86.10 a week ago,
brought 86.20 today, but they were a little
lilfhler. which, perhaps, account for u
part of the apparent advance. Ewe that
ai.ld last week at 84.70 brought 84.7b today,
this bring the highest price paid ao far
lor western ewes. There were yearlings
good enough to bring 86 00. While salesmen
were as a rule not quoting a very great
advance, still it is very apparent that the
market was higher than the low point last
week and lust as high as It was at the
best time last week, and a high a it has
Lien ny time this season to uate.
The lamb inurket was not very active.
In the first place, the aupply was small,
and In the second place, buyers did not
appear overly anxious for what stuff there
was here, so that the best that could be
said of the trade would be to quote it a
slow at about steady prices.
