CHICAGO, Dec 10. Wheat prices on
the local exchange fluctuated violently to-
'' day over a range of lSHjlo, but at the
clnse were almost Unchanged compared
with yesterday's final quotations, the mar
ket finishing firmer at almost the highest
point of the day. Corn, oats and provi

The wheat market was extremely nervous
all day and sentiment in the pit was gen-
' e rally bearish until late In the session,
when prices advanced sharply on buying
by leading longs and local shorts. The
market opened weak with prices unchanged
to o lower, with the May delivery show
ing the greatest weakness. Toward the
.middle of the day and after several slight
sinking spells the market became almost
." demoralised as a result of general selling
Inspired by liquidation by several of the
bull leader. Within a very few minutes

was checked only by the effort of big
holder who quit selling temporarily and
began reinstating lines sold out earlier In
the day. This resulted In price advanc-
titans' so new high point for the day. May

government' estimate. On the other hand,
the Kansas report raised the government's
estimate of yield for that state by 3.000.000
'bushel and made the condition 96, against
' 92 a shown by the government's. Clear
ance of wheat and flour were equal to
673.000 bushels. Corn waa weak nearly all
day. The market rallied late In the day
- In sympathy with the upturn In wheat
- and closed firm, with prices unchanged
to m shade lower, oompared with the pre-
- vlou close. Final quotations on May
were 62o and on July C2Uee.

Fair Friday, bat Little Colder, Say

OMAHA. Dec. 10, 1908.
An area of high pressure overlies the
eastern portion, and clear weather Is gen
eral throughout the eastern states. It is
cloudy In the Mississippi valley and south
trn states, clear west of the Missouri river
Into the mountains, and throughout the
southwest, but is unsettled In toe north
west, and snows are falling in northern
Wyoming, western Montana, with rains on
the north Pacific slope. Temperatures are
higher everywhere except In the lower lake
region, upper Ohio valley and eastern states
and extreme northwest. The low pressure.
over the Missouri valley and west to the
mountains, will cause inoreased cloudiness
In this vicinity, but the weather will prob
ably continue fair tonight and Friday,
witn some wnat colder rriaay.

NEW YORK. Dec. 10 The stock marVct
today continued to be largely one of ape
claltiee. The Harriman Pacifies were
pushed forward Into prominence again, but
even these usually influential leaders did
not revive any animation In the dealings
In the high grade stocks, which In common
practice predominate In the dee-ling's.
The special strength or the Harriman s
as connected with the showing of the an
nual report cf the Union Pacific snd its
auxiliaries. The renort woa a sufficiently
striking exhibit of the vest and complicated
ctivitiee of this powerful Instrument oi
finance and Industry, and the efficiency
with which the Instrument hsd been em
ployed wss shown beyond dispute by the
figure presented. The reduction In the
holdings for Investment of the Great
Northern and Northern Pacific shares, the
conversion of Chicago, Milwaukee and St
Paul common stockholdings Into subscrip
tions for new stock and the Increase In
Illinois Central holdlnrs were items of
special Interest stock-market-wise.
1 he perusal of tha annual renort was of
less Influence on the mind cf the average
speculative follower of the market than was
he demonstrative buvtnir of the Harriman
and of other stocks by brokers, credited
with acting for Standard Oil Interests. The
openness with which large orders were
executed from these sources was supposed
to mean a proclamation of confidence In
higher prices on the part of the buyers.
Filing of notice with the Interstate Com

the group. The metal industrials showed
some renewed strength belief that agree

ing factor, aa It is believed that the plac
ing of orders by the Pennsylvania would
prove a signal for the placing of orders by
the railroads generally. November reports
of agricultural exports showed a falling
off of over 336.000,OuO from the valuatirm of
a year ago, but the rush of commodities to
foreign markets to realise on to meet the
country's panic necessities was then In full
iorce. lime loan rates here were firmer

large sums from the banks without the
payment of subscriptions for the Panama

CATTLE Receipts of cattle this morning
were only moderate, but still there waa
a fair run for a Thursday. The market
a whole did not show anr very mate
rial change, prices for the) most part being
about steady.
Packers were out In fair season In tha
morning and they evidently wanted a few
good killers. Tha result was that desira
ble Kinds or tat steers oommanoM just
about the same ' prices aa prevailed on
yesterday's market, at least the better
grades sold that way. Inferior kinds were
a little slow, but that baa been the ea
practically every day this week.
What has been saea regaraing oeer si were

cow and heifer trade. The better grades
were In very fair demand and the trade
on that kind waa sufficiently active to
effect a reasonably earlv cleavrance.
Feeders of good quality hare been in
active demand all the week and specu

sight In anticipation ot a very good coun

good many cattle have accumulated In the
hands or speculators, with the result mac
they were not so eager for supplies this
morning. In consequence ot uus tnere

even on the very best grades, common
and inferior kinds were slow, the same as
thev have been every day.

HOG There was a fair run or hogs this
morning. In fact quite a liberal run, and
the market as a whole was In very satis
factory condition. Under the Influence of
more favorable ad v Iocs from other Belling
point and a good local demand, tha mar
ket opened 6a higher than yesterday. The
trade, however, was not very aotlv at tha
advance, salesmen holding on in an en
deavor to seeure every cent possible, while
packer were not overly anxious to Doost
r rices. Still, the hogs kept selling and the
desirable loads for the moat part cnanged
nan as in pretty lair season, as a matter
of course the common and Inferior grade
did not In all cases show as much advance
noted above. Ths bulk of all the hora
sold at 35.464J .to and on up as nigh as 16.80.

SHEEP Receipts this morning were very
light, only eight or tan oars being on sale.
As has been th case every day, th bulk
of th arrivals consisted of lambs, while
there were hardly enough sheep In sight
to talk about. It Is fortunate, however.
that such la the case, as ths demand at th
present time seems to be largely for lambs.
whlls the inquiry for fed sheep Is less
urgent than usual at this point. As a re
sult of the very good demand for fat lamb
the trade waa active, with prices liflSc
higher than yesterday. Good fed lambs
sold . up to 37.00, the highest price paid
since' July, when lambs also reached $7.00.
With that exception it Is the highest pric
paid since May, when 67.86 was ths top.
Sheep were in fair demand ana tiie rew
in sight commanded firm prices. Prac
tically everything on sale, or at least every
thing In tb way of desirable killers sold
early In th morning.
There were ftaraly enougn leeaer on sal
to talk about, but a few lambs brought
36.60, with another bunch at 34.76.
